well, there it is... i chose halo, and in doing so, i realize that being number 1 doesn't have as big as an advantage as i thought it would. there are so many games worthy of a number 1... this one just fit my strategy best. good luck, all!

Indeed. The field is so wide, EVERYBODY should have a classic as their number one draft pick.

Dan Whitehead

Well, GTA Vice City is going to be a lot of people's "must have" game by the end of this week once everyone's played it, so I consider this a long-term choice. I have plenty of tactical classics up my sleeve, but I thought I should nab Vice City before it went.

I do wonder though if it's really interesting to pick a game you've never played, basically picking it for prestige alone (not that I think that Vice City is gonna be anything less than fantastic).

Almost too obvious to mean anything. Vice City kicks a ton of ass, but I've got a lot more personal picks lined up.

Micah Robinson
10-28-2002, 10:36 AM
Well, I picked up the new EGM, and their series of full-length reviews, all of which rated it a perfect 10, pretty much had me sold, not to mention I know the game is very similar to Grand Theft Auto 3, which should be going any time now as well.

It has prestige to be sure, but it's TIMELY strategic prestige, as everyone should be well into the game by the time the draft concludes, and will probably give a lot of props to the guy who owns it when it comes to voting time.

There are few joys as great as when you have a sniper rifle, lots of ammo, and a nice perch to murder from on CTF-Facing Worlds.

Micah Robinson

UT was pretty fast too, but not quite THAT fast.

After having played Halo (comparatively slow, but way more realistic) for so long, it was a real re-adjustment going to UT2K3.

I don't get much out of the deathmatch in 2K3 (nor did I really in UT), but I think the CTF maps are pretty good and are the game's crowning jewel.

They just need to retweak the weapons a little, too.

But overall, I still think it's a good game.

I think Deathmatching was great in the early years of multiplayer, but now gamers expect more from an FPS. Look at Halo for example. Sure its okay going solo, but the team angle is much more fun. There's something so right in being able to scream at teammates as well as opponents.

Note: This post would've had a much more compelling argument, had I been able to list the games that I still hold a hope of drafting soon.

Dan Laugharn

Bombing Run makes the game, in my opinion.

And everybody, don't forget to include the system with your pick. (I knew Matt picked the Playstation version of MGS, but he may have wanted to PC version and I wouldn't know.)

Once those elements appeared, it was comparatively boring to just run around shooting everyone and everything ina frenzy.

We do occasional deathmatch rounds in Halo to get warmed up, btu I believe everyone in the CHUD ATlanta Halo group pretty much prefers Team Deathmatch.

We tried CTF, but there were too many complaints from CTF newbies about how hard it was to capture the flag, so we went back to Team Deathmatch, which is no problem for me, since Halo has two of the best maps ever for that (Blood Gulch and Sidewinder).

Micah Robinson

Dennis:
Doesn't the person who's turn it is have the whole half hour to make their pick? It seems that there has early drafting. They do, but once the next person's half-hour arrives, we can zoom along as fast as we like, assuming that everyone continues to draft in sequence.

So Otis and Adam McAllister completely missed their draft periods. They can catch up at ANYTIME from this point onward (and hopefully they'll do it tonight, so we don't have any stragglers going into Day 2.)

In the meantime, we can't afford to wait. I trust you've seen past drafts where the first round drags on for almost a week because people sign up and forgoet their pick is coming and or just go MIA alltogether while the draft stagnates and people get testy.

THAT is why there is a schedule in EVERY single round, and it was posted well-ahead of time. If you couldn't be here to make your pick, you had AMPLE opportunity to email your pick and alternates to me, and I announced just as much last week.

Matt Goldberg
10-28-2002, 04:08 PM
Conker is easily one of the funniest games I've ever played. The game could have just been one long gimmick of "Look! He's a cute squirrel! But look at all the disgusting shit we put in!" However, the gameplay is good and the game is wickedly clever, especially the movie references.

Nice pick by Dennis, although the control scheme still brings white-hot hate from my fingertips.

And for myself, a choice that should have been incredibly easy. It's a game that brought new life to a system and to an old-school icon, not to mention cementing RARE's place in game development. LOVE. And I still haven't found 101%.

Well, Waco and Verbal go on my shit-list....

Honestly, I wrestled with whether to go with Half-Life over Baldur's Gate 2 for a couple of days, and in the end decided I had to go with the thrill of watching my band of heroes fight side by side with Drizzt and company against the vampires in the cemetary. And Planescape, while it's a beautiful and deep game, I've never been able to finish.

Heh, heh, I knew that would be the case and I'm prepared for it. That game was fun on the Genesis, but it was a classic on the 3DO. They are actually remaking SC2 for the PC using the 3DO version as a model, with voices and everything. This needs to go in the most anticpated games thread, and it's free.

Yeah I would have thought that due to its immense popularity, FFVII would have been one of the first to go. But it's not the best RPG ever. It's not even the best FF.I knew there would be some discussion on this one. It actually was a tough choice for me between FFVII and another game, but between the two, I love FFVII more.

I think the best RPG title is heavily a matter of opinion. RPG is my favorite videogame genre. But I think Final Fantasy dominates as the best RPG series(though there are some that come awfully close).

I think out of all the FF games, FFVII is the best, though I know many love FFVI. But I think FFVI's cast of characters is much too long and you only care about only a few. VII just has more signifigance in the RPG genre. VII, I believe, is best selling PlayStation 1 game (I believe that the stat was that 1 in 3 PlayStation owners had the game). It has the best gameplay, it has the best characters, it has the best minigames, it has the best music, it has the best villain, it has the best story. It excels in almost every category.

It's ONLY weaknesses are Barrett is Mr. T, Chocobo Breeding can be slightly frustrating, and the graphics needed a bit more work (i.e. baseball bat-hands).

Alternate Titles:

"Dune: The Battle for Arrakis" -- Sega Genesis (U.S. & European) title
"Dune II: Battle for Arrakis" -- European (Box, Jewel Case, CD & Main Menu) Title
"Dune 2: Battle For Arrakis" -- European release

Also: I strongly feel that Dune 2000 was just a rehash of the original. Mikah, thats your call. But having played both, they are very similar, the latter, having an upgraded graphics and playing engine.

But to my credit, I got to the end/near the end of FF7-9 legitly.Whaaa? I would much rather never play the game, like I haven't done with FFVIII, IX, and X, than cheat my way through an RPG. What would possess you to do that? That removes all the fun out of it, and if there was no fun to begin with, why the hell are you playing it?

HATE.

The person who took A Link to the Past should be anally violated by a gang of Moblins and then fed to a Dodongo.
Why thank you... :)

Samurai X, I don't know if Final Fantasy Anthology is cool. I mean, of course Mikah has the final word, but you've basically chosen two games at once.

Yup, compilations are not eligible.

Confessor, great choice with Shining Force. I wasted many hours with that thing.

all i can do is gasp at the fact that three of the most well designed pc games of recent memory have yet to be drafted...that's not saying the picks so far have been shite, they're not...I'm just surprised.

it's not too late to join in is it?

Mr. Mike Arsenault,
I would like to inform you that your recent selection in the CHUD Video Game Draft has earned you "God" status and the respect implied therein. My entire young adolescent life was spent on RDS. Kudos, sir. Kudos.

I just private messaged mikah about FF Anthology. I know it's 2 games but it does come in one case together. I'm fine with it if it's not ok. I mainly chose it for FF6 anyway. So if it's not ok my choice is Final Fantasy 6.

The only issue I have with FF Anthology is this - is FF Chronicles acceptable? Because if Anthology is, it should be as well, and it contains a game that has already been selected...

Anyways, Brian - Dune 2. Inspired. My introduction to the RTS, and, really, the mother of the genre as Wolf 3D is to the FPS. Nice pick.

Matt - Sephiroth alone is worth the first round. Well done.

And Rath, well, yeah, the Dance scene is worth the first round as well, bud :)

Fuck you, Voltes...round 2 pick is gone. god, that was probably the best adventure game I've ever played. Still play through it every once and a while.

Grace Nakamura, oh so fine...

NO ANTHOLOGIES OR COMPILATIONS.

The choice is for Final Fantasy 6. Not the compilation with 5 as well.

So if it's not ok my choice is Final Fantasy 6.I seriously doubt it's okay. Mikah stated that any game that includes more than one game (no matter if it's on a single package) is NOT eligible for drafting, as he has said before. Example: Super Mario All-Stars... not eligible.

Hell, I'd be cautious drafting Donkey Kong 64 or Shemnue... as they contain other, older video games within.

Well... ignore this, as Mikah spoke while I typed it...

And here I thought that Cheese was gonna be the first one to draft a MK game. :D

By the way signor Goldberg, Sephiroth ain't the best FF villain. Kefka owns his ass (cue maniacal laughter).

Mortal Kombat II is lightyears ahead of Mortal Kombat 1.

Don't get me wrong, signor Virgil, I think Kefka is an incredible villain. I just think Sephiroth is a far more interesting character.

Oh, and Tony Ryan, I will propmtly rip out your balls and feed them to you for taking Super Mario World. You don't get a great pick like that without suffering the consequences.

I actually liked 3 the best in the arcade. But you gotta go with the classic.

Grace Nakamura, oh so fine...That would have been yours if pissant Nunziata hadn't chosen X-COM as GK1 was supposed to be my round 2 pick. Oh, but, HAHAHA!

I actually liked 3 the best in the arcade. But you gotta go with the classic.Yeah, that's why I also picked Street Fighter II over the other spin-offs. I can never remember the difference between all of them (though, I think I remember the Championship Edition being hella-fun). But I chose the original (wait... is there a Street Fighter I? I've never played it or seen it before) because I remember going to the arcades as a wee lad and popping coin after coin into Street Fighter II. And when the SNES came along... I was in heaven. I don't care if the revamps are better... the original is what stole my heart.

Street Fighter 1 was a real fun game. Way ahead of it's time with the it's button layout and controls.

There was a version of Street Fighter I that didn't have the standard LP,MP,HP and LK,MK,HK buttons. Instead, it had two pads (punch and kick) that, depending on how hard you hit the pad, would deliver that attack. Anyone else remember this?

I'm surprised only two games from my list have been stolen since my pick. TC2 and A Link to the Past.
