View Full Version : THE DRAFT IN A NUTSHELL

Dan Laugharn

Basically, this works like the NBA draft. The moderator of this thang (being Micah this time) takes a list of all the participants and puts them in a draft order. When the time comes, the participant "drafts" an object (being a video game this time.)

Ex: I'm like the Houston Rockets. But, instead of drafting Yao Ming, I'd draft Super Mario Brothers.

This goes on for 10 rounds, all the while the participants maintain their draft list. You can't take what somebody else has taken, nor can you take an entire franchise with one pick (I can't draft the super mario series, just one game.)

When the tourney is done, we do a comparrison of our drafts and come to a consensus on who "won." Keep all questions in the question thread, all discussion in the discussion thread, and make sure you update your personal draft list to avoid confussion.

I get it....

Can this count as the question thread. If not, someone create one. If so, I got a question:

How does one win? Do you just pick your favorite games? In Basketball, you pick the players you feel that can make the best team. I don't understand how that works with videogames.

It's a consensus. Everybody says who they think "won" and we kinda go from there. Don't expect any prizes or anything, though.

Q: What is the CHUD Video Game Draft and how does it work?
A: It is like ANY draft. A select number of particpants each have a turn in a round. The order of who gets to go is pre-determined by the Commish, and that order stays the same for every round. So if I say you get the 3rd pick, you get to pick 3rd every round, unless you want to trade your pick to someone else.

Trades are only allowed after the 5th round. There are 10 rounds in total.

So what are we picking? Videogames. Any system. Any era. If it's a game, it's eligible. Even import games.

The only stipulations are that you CANNOT pick entire franchises like Final Fantasy, NOR can you pick the exact same game if it's on another platform (e.g. if BloodRayne on Xbox gets picked, you cannot pick the PS2 version). That also means if the arcade version of a game gets picked, it is GONE. No home versions are eligible after that.

If you pick a game that is a remake of a past game (e.g. Metroid Fusion is almost identical to Super Metroid on the Super Nintendo), I'll make judgment calls on an individual basis as to whether I will allow them or not.

I'm also reserving the right to make judgment calls on Street Fighter 2 games. There is a difference between say Street fighter 2 Alpha and SF2 EX, but I won't allow splitting hairs to the point where people are picking Street Fighter 2 Turbo Championship when it's virtually the same game as Street Fighter 2.

As I said...I'll have to make judgment calls from time to time, and the commish's word goes. If you have a problem with something I decree, then Private Message me, and we'll discuss it.

I'll also be participating, but rest assured like past commishs who participated (Nick), I won't be playing favorites (even to myself). As far as the order, it'll be randomly decided, so don't whine if I'm high up in the order.

Once we have all the participants, you'll be given a pre-determined time to pick.

If you have any other questions, post them here along with your signup info or Private Message me.

Q: How do you win?
A: Simply by picking the most games that most people love the most. You're welcome to just pick obscure games that you like. But if you want to WIN, you must pick a balanced list with classics and recent games that everyone and their momma will go "Oooooh! Damn, I should've grabbed that!"

Stupid questions but it will save me some confusion, should I look for updates on the boards or in my mail?

Micah Robinson
10-22-2002, 05:29 PM
Specify updates?

The draft takes place entirely on the boards. There's a separate thread for each round's picks. Then a separate thread for discussing the picks of that round. Finally, there's also a separate thread to keep all your draft picks together.

Thats what I was wondering, thanks Micah.

Two Questions
When will this draft start?
How many different games will you be able to chose per round?

Cheese Biscuits
10-22-2002, 07:35 PM
Oh, let me just chime in here and mention something. When the draft threads get rolling, they are for draft business only. There will be separate thread created for discussion and pictures (in case you want to visually show off the game you snatched). Don't post your pics or comments in the general draft threads... or Mongo will hurt you.

10-22-2002, 07:39 PM
Mongo? What about Abobo?

Hey Micah, have you asked Nick to kindly turn editing back so's we can update our draft lists?

Sincerely,

Then you're shit outta luck because the concept is impossible to understand.

That's OK. I'm only mildly interested anyway...

So, say I'm scheduled to draft on Monday at 10. I have a class at 10. Suppose I'm late? What happens?

Cheese Biscuits
10-24-2002, 12:16 AM
You cna get somebody else to post your pick for you (don't worry... everyone's real honest about it and there's ALWAYS somebody around... hell, you can ask Nick to do it for ya). And the odds of you having the 10 o'clock spot are pretty small. Even if you get a time that you won't be able to post around, or you can't get some nice Chewer to post for you, then you can just post it later when you have time.

The time slot is the EARLIEST you can post... you can post anytime after your time, but be warned, people technically behind you in order can take your ideas away from you if you don't get back fast... and there's shit-nill you can do about it.

Gemini
10-24-2002, 02:10 AM
Hmmm, okay.

Micah Robinson

The draft starts MOnday at 10AM.

If you cannot be around to make you rpick at your appointed time, either email it to me, Nick, or someone to make it for you...

OR

You take your chances and make it yourself whenever you can. Be forewarned, however, that anyone who is scheduled to go in the interim between when you where scheduled to go and when you actually go can go, and they do not have to wait on you. The draft will roll on with or without you, and oicks you want will go quickly. So think about what you want, devise a strategy, and get a nice, deep list of picks that includes several alternate choices for each round.

You choose ONE game each round. We have 10 rounds, so when the draft is complete, you SHOULD have picked TEN games. It is possible, however, to make a trade after round 5 for another person's pick in the same round. For example, you may decide to trade your 7th and 8th round picks to get someone else's 6th round pick. Then you would have TWO picks in the sixth round and NO picks in the 7th and 8th rounds. Therefore, when the draft ended, you'd have NINE games.

Micah. You gonna determine the order today?

Gemini
10-24-2002, 10:39 AM
Also, are we speaking in Eastern or Central time?

Also, are we speaking in Eastern or Central time?Eastern time, as Atlanta is the center of the CHUD universe and is, in fact, located in the Eastern time zone.

So, who else is flying by the seat of their pants on this one? I have my 10th round pick locked, but that's it.

Gemini
10-24-2002, 02:07 PM
Thought so. Therefore, by central time, we start at 9 monday?

And, yes, very seat of the pants here.

Micah Robinson
10-24-2002, 02:15 PM
Order goes up at 1:30PM.

Kill it, Rath. It was completely random. You pays your dues, and you takes your chances.

Boomstick

how long do drafts like this usually last?
how long between rounds? start on the hour? day?

Micah Robinson
10-24-2002, 04:48 PM
Boomstick:
how long do drafts like this usually last?
how long between rounds? start on the hour? day?We start 10AM, Monday the 28th. Every round takes TWO days to complete, and we only draft on M-F.

That means every 10 weekdays, 5 rounds occur.

Of course, this will occasionally speed up because even though you have a scheduled time to pick, YOU MAY DRAFT AT ANY TIME SO LONG AS THE PERSON IN FRONT OF YOU HAS ALREADY MADE A LEGAL PICK.

What does that mean? It means that as long as the person ahead of you didn't leapfrog someone else to pick out of turn and they've made a pick - you can go. So if your scheduled time is 4PM, and the people ahead of you all go by 11AM, you can make your pick.

Boomstick
10-24-2002, 05:04 PM
so m through f, for the next two weeks, i pick at 9 am central time. right? if so, sweet.

gravedigger
10-24-2002, 05:04 PM
But as soon as our time is up we can draft regardless of whether the joker before us has drafted, correct?

Did that make sense?

Did that make sense?Yes. Even if no one has gone ahead of you, you are obligated to go at your scheduled time. The only way to pick earlier than your scheduled time is if everyone else ahead of you has already gone in that round.

BTW, I made a Boo-Boo and left out Burke (who had an assigned number beforehand, so I am not randomly sticking him in just to be nice.).
