So who are they? Let's call "new" from 1990 on.
Sarah Michelle Gellar with Buffy, Scream 2 and IKWYDLS is probably the most likely choice.
How about Clea Duvall? Ok, she isn't the most emotive actress ever and her head is shaped like something an anthropoligist would dig up but her resume includes quite a bit of genre work: Faculty, How to Make a Monster, Ghosts of Mars, Little Witches, The Astronaut's Wife (haven't seen that one) and the upcoming surreal Carnivale series on HBO which may have a supernatural theme to it.
Neve Campbell is a logical choice (whether she likes it or not) with the Scream trilogy, The Craft and a possible role in Cursed.
Natasha Henstridch is also a candidate with Species (1 and 2) and Ghosts of Mars although she caused most of the screaming in the Species films.
Who have I left out? Is there any one actress that is the best at this type of role?

Debbie Rochon, baby!
God...I've really only seen her in Hellblock 13 and American Nightmare, but I'm in love.

Scream Queens are gone. There was a time, around the "Scream" era, that I might've thought that Jennifer Love and Gellar were the next "queens" but their track record has been inconsistent.
I don't really think we have Quigley, Stevens, Gabrielle-leve screamers anymore.
Rochon? Whatever.

Well, just for her performance in the 'Ring' remake, I'd have to say Naomi Watts gets my vote.

What about Jennifer Love Hewitt in the two "I know what you did last summer" movies ? I think she and Thelma&Louise gave a good job in those two movies wink
Ali Larter, Final Destination ? hm
Hm, I´m afraid there are no new ones.

I have a lead actress cast in the film i'm working on, i seriously think she has the potential to be a new generation scream queen. Only time will tell however.

Most of the people mentioned are too mainstream to be Scream Queens. Direct-to-video movies just aren't as fun as they use to be either. Maybe it's just the fact that I had such an affection for Linnea Quigley in my teenage years. Two words: Vice Academy.
There needs to be a Linnea Quigley boxed set. I would definitely spend good money on garbage like that.

As if no one has mentioned Katherine Isabelle?
And Stephanie Beaton who also has a nice little group of horror movies under her name.

Katharine Isabelle is building up a solid genre history, but look, just because an actress took a lead role once or twice in some horror film doesn't necessarily make them a scream queen.
Scream Queen's have to like the genre. They're fans. They're in horror 'cause they dig it as much as we do and get a kick out of it.
Not because they're contractually obligated to star in a sequel.

Personally, I think the time of the scream queen is over. Most of the women considered Scream Queens these days seem to mostly make movies that are shot on video with a budget roughly equal to the price of a tank of gas.

Scream Queens do these things:
1. Take long showers and peek out to ask, "Who's there?".
2. Wear revealing lingerie around the house alone at night.
3. Scream well.
4. Can't really defend themselves when attacked.
5. Make beautiful corpses.
6. Have sex riding on top so their throats are easily cut by the maniac who sneaks up behind them.
7. Show boobs and other such soft parts through most of the movie.
It's been a while since we've seen a real Scream Queen. The current gaggle of comely young ladies in Hollywood don't count. They're not trashy enough.

Not sure what defines a scream queen, but Asia Argento and Rose McGowan are both excellent performers with great presence ...
McGowan was great as the murderous nymph in both JAWBREAKER and DEVIL IN THE FLESH ...

If anything, the only reason those were shot on film is because they didn't have any real equivalent to DV back then.

Kari Wuhrer has appeared in plenty of genre stuff and she's not averse to getting her bits out.

Some interesting points by everyone.
I would have to say that the term "Scream Queen" has changed a bit over the years. What many of us consider attributes of a Scream Queen didn't exist back in the 40s and 50s. However I would agree that most of the candidates for Scream Queen now star in direct to DVD fare.
The female character in horror flicks these days doesn't do much screaming and most actresses that take the roles don't stick with genre work but use it as a stepping stone on their way up the Hollywood food chain.
Still there has to be SOME mainstream actress that could be considered a contemporary Scream Queen. Doesn't there? Adam_72 mentioned Kari Wuhrer and she just might fit the bill.

To clarify, the movies the scream queens were starring in back then were definately movies with very low budgets but these days many of the movies that they're appearing in are so no budget that they look more like home movies than actual films.

The funny thing is, Bog Creatures actually had some money behind it. They shot on 35mm. I saw in your review you didn't like that title. I think it was originally Bog People. The releasing company likes to change names of movies. I could see why...Bog Creatures sounds better than Bog People, but they aren't really creatures.
I don't know which Debbie Rochon movies you've seen besides Bog Creatures, but she's really a good actress. I worked with her once and I was surprised by how good she was. Even in a cheesy movie like Tromeo and Juliet you can see she's got the goods. Haven't seen Bog Creatures though.

BOG CREATURES was the first movie of hers I'd ever seen (or at least the first one I'd ever seen where I knew who she was going in). What I've heard from most people is that her performances seem to vary from film to film. Apparently she can do a fine job in one movie and suck ass in another. BOG CREATURES must be one of the latter because she was absolutely atrocious in it and she alone made the last half hour virtually unwatchable.
Also, I found out about the name change after writing the review. Even BOG PEOPLE is a terrible title but at least it isn't as intentionally misleading as BOG CREATURES.
