I'm not sure where the love for Winston is coming from, Johnny... The guy isn't who you think he is.
The shop's best work has been the "Jurassic Park" dinosaurs, I think - definitely not their work on "Aliens". I remember when the Cameron picture came out, people ragged on how they changed the bug's appearance from the first one...no sleek, smooth head, wrong body type for the stunt men wearing the suits, etc...Also, Cameron designed EVERYTHING, including the warriors & Queen.
To give you some history, Woodruff & Gillis worked at Winston Studios, and were there every day on "Aliens". When they broke off & started ADI, they were a natural and cheaper choice for Fox on the next 2 movies.
The other thing is that these guys aren't the only guys responsible for creature designs - you have to blame the Directors - that's who ADI is working for, the people who dictate what they do. You don't like the bugs in "Alien Resurrection" - well, it's really Jeunet's fault. They (ADI) worked to his satisfaction. (BTW, when you see one of these puppies up close at ADI, they're pretty impressive - much cooler than they were on screen...)
I've seen what they're doing on "AvP", and while I hold no hope for a good FILM, ADI's work looks pretty damn good to me...
On a side note, rumour is that Fox seriously considered Winston Studios for the Predators on "AvP", but that they priced themselves out of the job. That's what the word is...
