I havn't actully seen this movie but read the back of the box once, and what your describing sounds like it, could it be The Curse?

Could be "Invaders from Mars" (both the 1953 or 1986
or "Die Monster Die" (a 1965 Boris Karlof vehicle inspired by HP Lovecraft's "The Color Out Of Space")
Can you give more details?

I've read stuff saying the mother gets possessed in The Curse.

Yeah, sounds like The Curse. When I was little, that movie made me affraid to drink water. I eventually got over it. Now I'm up to at least five glasses a day.

The curse is a remake of Die Monster Die - with some dodgy "executive director" credit by Lucio Fulci.....still a bunch of old ass though.

I had forgot "The Curse", which is even more strange if youy think that I'm one of the three person in Italy what had the horrid misfortune to see it...
Actually, I've to blame "Fangoria", who did a comprehensive preview of the movie back in 1987 calling it a good HPL adaptation (at least, a serious HPL adaptation after the whole spat of over the top "Re-Animator" clones). The results where, at least, afwul...

The "Lucio Fulci" tag is false, possibily a stunt by "The Curse"'s financer, erztwhile Italian produced Ovidio De Assonitis (the guy who gave us "Tentacles" and "Behind The Door", by far Mario Bava worst movie... - but also gave James Cameron his second directing chance!)

Wasn't old Ass-onitis also responsible for 'Orca the Killer Whale' ? Man the guy'a mom must be proud.
Yeah, I recall the Fulci tag being planted on the UK's (actually quite evocative) VHS sleeve -- and..well, it fooled me into renting the sucker. One of the most atriocious slices of bad, ersatz "shocking" cinema to be shat out of the ass end of the 1980s - along with Fulci's own Aenigma and Voices from Beyond...
