I'm not sure how to answer this. Resident Evil really disappointed me as a horror movie, but was a decent action flick. I Know What You Did Last Summer and it's sequel (it DID have a sequel, right?) didn't deserve the success they enjoyed at the box office.

Like most people, I hate picking lists of favorites, b/c I always have to leave something out that later I feel I should have included. But here's a list of my favorites right now, at this moment: (all favorites subject to change. :D )

Top 3 Horror Movies

1. The Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr)--the movie that made me want to watch other horror movies. I still think it's one of the best, and you won't change my mind on that!
2. The Haunting (1963) --if there's a better, creepier, more goosebump-inducing haunted house movie, I haven't seen it. Scariest Rated-G movie EVAR.
3. The Exorcist Part III I know, I know. But the acting is incredible--George C. Scott is totally great, and Brad Dourif is a god of Insanity. Plus the writing , the cinematography, genuine scares. I love, love, love it.

2 Horror Sleepers

1. Dagon --I call this a sleeper because most people haven't heard of it, present company excluded. Great, great flick.
2. The Attic Expeditions If you haven't seen this, go rent it now. Seth Green turns in a spectacular performance as...well, himself, and Jeffrey "God" Combs. What are you waiting for?

2 Overrated Flicks

1. The Amityville Horror Okay, I was just as scared as everyone else when this came out. But I went back and watched it again a few years ago and was surprised by how boring and slow it is.
2. Session 9 I know some people above have listed this as a sleeper, but I felt it wasted some great potential. Creepy set, creepy setup, yet failed to scare me. Please don't kill me.

Favorite Horror Decade:
The 30s , leaking into the 40s. Karloff, Lugosi, Chaney, Rains--where it all began for me.

Weird... some people have Session 9 as a sleeper /underrated, while others have it as overrated. Surely it can't be both?No offense to Girl Creeture (whom I now know and love), but it is certainly a mysteriously overrated pile of dog-poop.

We're talking about a movie that was hyped up by horror fans as the real-deal: indie filmmakers making an atmospheric scare-fest, down and dirty, shot on video, new hope for horror, etc. We heard this before the movie came out and we started hearing it from the few who'd gone and seen it. That's what the "underraters" would have you believe.

Instead, the film is pretentious, amateur-hour, home video / film school nonsense, with terrible acting and a complete waste of a great location. Suspense that (more often than not) leads to nothing; idiot characters who sit around talking and then do one idiot thing after another so as to move the story forward; and a twist ending that's broadcast to the audience an hour before its reveal.

Considering the hype and the praise, I'd say it's definitely overrated on all counts.

Re "the buzz": It got a theatrical out here in L.A. and had already been covered in Fango as well as talked about online.

I found Session 9 to be a very good movie, yet highly in vain of Twin Peaks. A good little flick, with good ideas even if it did have David Caruso(sp?). Had some of the great death scenes in a movie at that.

For the people that have, or at least have seen the Deleted Scenes on the DVD I just want to say: I am glad they cut those out. That whole side story would have ruined the movie for me.

This movie is like The Royal Tenenbaums for reviews. You either love it, or you hate it. I personally enjoyed it very much.

Considering the hype and the praise, I'd say it's definitely overrated on all counts.I was exposed to none of this hype, and saw it solely on recommendation from this forum. It's wasn't even available at any of my local rental outlets, I had to buy it from DDDhouse. It seems that many of your comments may be colored stronger due to the fact that it didn't live up to your expections, considering all the coverage you had been steeped in.

I venture this as your feelings for Session 9 echo some of my own for Resident Evil: I feel like I'm much more critical of the movie than it may deserve because I feel it let me down tremendously. I know if Session 9 had been presented to me the way you described it, I would have been anticipating a different movie altogether, and may have been let down by it. Viewing it with no preconceptions, not even knowing what it was about, let alone being burdened with the expectations you detailed above, had me watching this movie with wide-eyed wonder. I felt that the performances were top-notch, and the production value surprisingly high. I never for one moment was struck with feelings of pretension or amateurism, and was completely sucked in to the spiraling sense of madness that crept into the characters. The suspense generated from the outset may not have individual payoffs but are plenty creepy, and intensify the sudden flurry of activity at the end.

I had no idea it was shot on video and if so, it's the best video production I have ever seen.

It's not perfect, the ending is telegraphed almost at the very beginning, but I still enjoyed getting to the last frame. Juxtapose this with a film like "The Mothman Prophecies", with a similar pace but ten times the budget: I could hardly stay awake during that film long enough to witness it's horribly telegraphed ending, let alone be disappointed by it. (Seriously though, how many movies can we not see the ending halfway through, anyway? I'm sure most of us here are so familiar with formula and it's potential tweaks that maybe 10% offer any real surprises in the last 30 minutes.)

Anyway, I think that anticipating all the lofty ideals expressed in the coverage you described would immediately sound the cynicism siren, and make it much more difficult to enjoy the movie.

Wow, you folks are maniacs ... I am so glad I found this site ... Agree or disagree, the passion for horror here is inspiring ... I especially like Capt Blake's mention of WOMAN IN BLACK and AKL's sleeper KWAIDAN ... Both of those films are EXCELLENT, and could have easily made my top 3 had I seen them when I was a kid ...

Ya know, I love horror, and there are so many greats out there ... PHANTASM and FRIDAY THE 13th are great in my book, elevated to Top 3 status by the fact that I snuck into both when I was a kid ( as I did with DAWN OF THE DEAD, which btw, could have easily been in the Top 3 ), and have such great memories of ...

The Vampire Chronicles - Full Moon has released a lot of shit... but every now and then they release something really good. This one got ignored for the most part, but is extremely well done. The lead is played by David Gunn (who absolutely rules in The Convent) and he's got a lot of potential to be a genre favorite.

Wild Zero - Not enough people have seen this Japanese gem. It's got rock and roll. It's got zombies. Do you really need anything else?

(P.S. It didn't change my opinion of Session 9 one bit, but I found it illuminating and beautifully stated just the same. Like someone said above, "Session 9" falls into that "Royal Tenenbaums" category of love it or hate it. I loved Tenenbaums, hated Session 9. Hated it. One of the worst films of 2001, hype or no. You might have noticed the severe "video" quality had you seen it in a theater -- where digital still looks a little, well "videoee" -- I believe I had seen a video-to film transfer, which made it look like "Hoop Dreams." The praise hurt the film in only that it was wholly unfounded and utterly groundless. I would've seen the film just the same, being a horror junkie. If it had been good, I would've liked it.)

(P.S. It didn't change my opinion of Session 9 one bit, but I found it illuminating and beautifully stated just the same. Like someone said above, "Session 9" falls into that "Royal Tenenbaums" category of love it or hate it. I loved Tenenbaums, hated Session 9. Hated it. One of the worst films of 2001, hype or no. You might have noticed the severe "video" quality had you seen it in a theater -- where digital still looks a little, well "videoee" -- I believe I had seen a video-to film transfer, which made it look like "Hoop Dreams." The praise hurt the film in only that it was wholly unfounded and utterly groundless. I would've seen the film just the same, being a horror junkie. If it had been good, I would've liked it.)Thank you kindly, sir. Come to think of it, in all my years of movie discussions, I can't recall a single instance where I've convinced someone to like a movie they simply didn't care for, for whatever reason. The reverse is also true, I've never been convinced to overturn my opinion of a movie I didn't like.

The exercise, however, is always enjoyable.

3 Favorites.....

1. This would have to go to Suspiria. I love the use of color in this movie and the Music score is as haunting as the day I watched it for the first time on the Movie Channel on Warner cable 20 Some years ago...... Watching it again in its proper aspect ratio for the first time was such a treat.

2. Prince of Darkness. Great tension in this one.

3. Now,,, out of left field. As a kid I would stay up and watch The Hoolihan and Big Chuck Show or 8 All Night in the Cleveland area. They would show this movie every once in awhile. The Monolith Monsters, What a great movie.. What a way to create a scary movie out of a bunch of Rocks.....

Sleepers.....

1. Wolfen. Great movie and possibly the best use of the Lower Manhattan sky line I've ever seen. Those views of the Twin Towers from the top of the bridge are just breathtaking.

2. I haven't bought Ginger Snaps yet!!

Overrated.....

1. John Carpenters The Thing. I hate the stupid climax. What a way to destroy the creature. flip some dynamite into its mouth. It reminds me of the dumb ending on Deep Six where he does this stupid little flip thing into its mouth....
Don't get me wrong. I love the movie but I think the final confrontation should have involved a little more than what was done. Its as if they ran out of money.

2. Fulci Films. I think all the scores for his films are a step up from porno music. I'm kidding about the porno,but not the music..... the only film I saw growing up was Zombie. So watching them today they seem so dated. Zombie on the other hand I have fond memories of. I balanced my way across a dead tree, jumped over a small electric fence and then hid in the tall brush to see this at the local drive-in. It would have been better with out the stupid shark scene.
