Wish me luck-or begin throwing things at me now, as I am about to sit down and watch The Sixth Sense for the first time...
And to answer your question-
"Yes, as a matter of fact-a very large decorative rock on my lawn under a tree."

--FIRST OFF, DESPITE ITS BOX OFFICE HAUL, AND THE FACT IT'S BEEN ON VIDEO FOR AWHILE-I'M STILL GOING TO SAY THAT THERE ARE SPOILERS DOWN HERE--
Having watched the Oscars, I was bothered by the inclusion of the Sixth Sense in many a category.
"This was a thriller with a twist ending, nothing more-why was it up for the statues."
Well, that's what I thought anyway.
When I watched the film-I knew two things about it:
A) The child is plagued by visions of ghosts, and-
B) Bruce Willis is DEAD.
Yes, unfortunately, I knew the big secret. And the thing of it is, It did not hurt my enjoyment of the film one iota-As a matter of fact, it made it better-because it was unnecessary for me to watch for secret or clues, I could concentrate on the story and the performances-which were absoltely top-shelf.
I assumed all that kid would do would be whisper and shake, but his performace was so assured. He truly is every bit deserving of his Oscar nod. He isn't cue-carding it like other child actors, he is actually delivering a performance.
As to the very many Bruce Willis detractors, I must say-Leave the guy alone. Such depth and range can be found here. I will not deny getting choked up watching him tell Cole the tale of his disintegrating marriage and his need for atonement for "failing" a patient.
What I discovered was that this movie isn't the shocking suspenser I was told it was-instead, I was amazed by its heart, by the fact that it was so bittersweet. When Osment's chaacter proves to his mother he's telling the truth...When Willis's character discovers the truth-and his subsequent acceptance and touching conversation with his wife-compelling dramatic moments in a well-crafted film. It the end of the day, it does not look absurd at all that this film shared best picture nominations with two of the best films I've ever seen-Green Mile and American Beauty-It is in their company-It is a beautiful movie. I loved it.

I, too, knew the 'secret' going in. And I agree, HAM, this movie is more than the surprise twist -- I loved watching how the director pulled off hiding the twist, and yet giving enough clues along the way.
I enjoyed the film immensely. My only "problem" was with the blantantly awful make-up effects. I wish the 'ghosts' had been less gruesome -- not because I dislike grue, but because the falseness of the effects reminded me over and over again that they weren't really dead people...

Great review of a great movie HAM.
I must admit, I was surprised to see that you liked it. So many cynics have had so much bad too say about this film. And I guess, to my chagrin, I had lumped you in with those people. My apologies.
I do agree about the movie being great even if you know the twist. I went back a week after I saw it the first time and took my parents. Even better the second time around.
Although, I still think the best way to see it was on opening night (like my first) without even knowing that there was going to be a twist ending. No searching for clues, no looking for evidence. Just pure movie-watching bliss.
Sorry for gushing, but it's good to hear that good peeps like good flicks!

The only thing I knew about this movie going into it (a WEEK ago, yes, I DO live in a fukken cave...) is that, and I quote, "A solid contender that makes good on what it promises at the beginning."
That's it. That's all I knew.
I figured it out, though, when he met his wife for dinner, and I almost had a stroke. My vision tunneled, my breath caught, and I was thrilled out of my tiny little mind like I haven't been since I realized who Keyser Soze was.
(I know, there was only one direction they were GOING with the Keyser Soze thing, but there is the same theme present in the Usual Suspects that there is in the Sixth Sense. There are clues, chronological ones, in the weaving of Kint's lies and BEFORE he starts lying that are the key to LOGICALLY knowing who Soze is, and WHY you know it. I was alone in the theater at the time, a full house, and I started laughing out loud. I was in heaven)
