View Full Version : Five Essential Horror Movies

I've never been a really big horror fan, but much has changed during my stay in CHUDville. I still wouldn't consider myself much of an expert on horror films but humor, and then instruct me.
These are in no paticular order BTW.
1. Nightmare on Elm Street
2. Scream
3. Pet Sematary
4. Bram Stoker's Dracula
5. Evil Dead 2

Hey, chenzzo-
I'd probably end up in a three-way barbed-wire bat, falls count anywhere Hardcore Match with Butane and Nick Nunziata for the title of Horror Know-it-All here at CHUD, but It'd end with me clenching Nick's still-beating heart in my Left Hand Black, and Johnny's larynx between my teeth- http://www.chud.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif -but...
I'd keep-
Nightmare on Elm Street-Before he was a wildly-successful cartoon character, Freddy Krueger was the surreal psychological afterbirth of the sins of amoral parents perpetuated on their innocent children. It is because of this that the central idea of Freddy resonates.
Evil Dead 2-The film's sucessful melding of gore-drenched horror and ludicrous slapstick influences horror films to this day, and it's explosive camera has most definitely taken over mainstream cinema. If you need any proof-when Stallone drops in the streetfight at the climax of Rocky V, the dementia in his head is rendered Sam Raimi-style.
Remove Pet Semetary-not that it's bad, it just that, by the very nature of your thread, we're looking for essentials. I'm trying to compile a list that, when you step back and look at the whole thing, you can create a family tree-something to which you can trace the roots of contemporary horror.
Remove "Dracule"-DOKTOR, PLEEEZE!
Remove Scream-again, not because it's bad...
Add Halloween-Scream simply pays good-natured homage to this film-and without Wes Craven's direction, which deftly uses the widescreen image in the same way Carpenter did-to conceal and reveal, it would, I'm positive, be no different then the clones and ripoffs over the last twenty years.
Add Night of the Living Dead-get a hold of Anchor Bay's vid release of the Elite THX Laserdisc transfer-and the film feels as vital and contemporary as any film released today. The socio-political/race-relations ground that is subtly covered...the knowledge that the living humans are acting with with more savagery than the creatures they combat-It's so urgent and it rings so true. This film is the archetype for "Docu-Horror."
Add Psycho-I shouldn't even have to explain this one. Profoundly influential and absolutely legendary.
Anyway, that's my go at it. And my opinions are so valid and correct that I expect this post to be the final word on the subject.

can't believe I forgot about NOTLD.
Great Flick.
I almost put Halloween down on my list, but I've never seen it, so that would be kinda hypocritical of me, now wouldn't it.

Here's my picks:
Halloween
Psycho
The Exorcist
The Shining
A Nightmare on Elm Street
I'd add Jaws, but even though it has many geniunely frightening scenes, I just don't seem to consider it a horror movie.
Same with the first two Alien movies
Johnny Butane

Okay, I have to say no to "The Shinning" ooops, "Shining", mainly because I am fierce Stephen King fan, fierce I say, and the movie didn't follow the book nearly close enough for my liking. Perhaps if I had seen the movie seperatly, it would've been different. But I didn't, so it's not. Same with "Pet Semetary" (now, the sequel, that's a different story EDDIE FURLONG FOREVER). Here, this is my list
1) Halloween
2) Nightmare on Elm Street
3) An American Werewolf In London
4) Evil Dead 2
5) The Cabinet of Dr. Calagari
Now, some may not agree with all (like "werewolf"), but these are the most infuluential films I saw. Thank you, good night.

He broke a record, MOX. Not only did he put 10 choices in his top 5, but since he didn't specify which film number or remake in each, he actually included about 35 films in his top 5. Pretty damned good if you ask me!

MOX: Someday I'll post the top ten people who are most likey to have their tender livers ripped out and eaten in front of them as they die. I'm sure #1 will be a certain anal message board nitpicker who doesn't even post his answer to the topic at hand before attacking a first-time poster.
Blo: Funny. I'm sure if you REALLY thought about it, you could guess which specific movies I was refering to... but if you're too lazy, here you go:
1. Halloween 1
2. Night of the Living Dead (original)
3. Psycho 1
4. The Omen 1
5. The Exorcist 1
I know, I know... more than 5, but hey I guess I just can't help myself
6. Suspiria
7. The Thing (Carpenter remake)
8. The Fog
9. Nightmare on Elm St. 1
10. Friday the 13th 1
later, kiddies...

I can't wait to watch this scenario unfold.
Ok I usually dont do this kinda thing......but, to welcome our new found friend, and to show them how this board is not personally attacking them but rather to convey something funny to the rest of us, and how this kind of stuff happens to me all the time and how I have come to grips with this, and how I take it in stride, I offer this retort:
Tonight the part of the person most likely to over-react, cry, weep, moan, mumble incoherently, babble, coo, scream, disembowel themselves in front of others, and to run home and shave thier mamma's back will be again played by Eugene the Ewok molester.
Try to understand I hold you in the highest respect. http://www.chud.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif
(tell me what movie that is from and I will lighten up on you a little...if you keep trying to verbalize me, I will continue to show what I am talking about when I say this is not a personal thing)

Hey, all. I just discovered this board. Nice to meet you.
As for essential horror films... here's my choices:
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE
DAWN OF THE DEAD
THE FLY (1986)
There are countless others, and I'd give you my reasons for these being essentials if I weren't so tired. There's always tomorrow...
G'night.

My 5 essential Horror movies are:
1) The Exorcist: saw this when I was only 14 and it affected me, I mean really! It has dated but it is still the
scariest film ever made.
2) Near Dark. In my opinion the best vampire movie ever made. Stylish and ahead of it’s time and very shocking.
3) Alien. |Is it a horror flick with Sci-fi leanings or vice versa? A seminal piece of work and my favourite film of all time.
4) Dawn of the Dead or Night of the Living Dead. I can never remember which. It’s the one where they are trapped in the shopping Mall. The definitive zombie movie.
5) Nightmare on Elm Street. The best in the now tired teen-slasher genre. Made before Freddy became a parody of himself a genuinely scary movie.
Bubbling under the top 5: Evil Dead, Exorcist 3, The Thing, Interview With A Vampire, The Blair Witch Project. Hellraiser I & II, Fright Night

Hmmmmmm........
Pick only five, eh......
1. Return of the Living Dead(killer soundtrack, Linnea Quigley, utmost gore)
2. The Shining(there's something about this cheesy flick that creeps me out to this day.)
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre II("all you motherfuckers......don't tell me what I should......do-o-o-o-)
4. Shocker(that's right.......I said Shocker! Wanna' do somethin' bout it?)
5. Back to School(Rodney Dangerfield in that swimsuit........How scary is that?

You little pipsqueak, how could you possibly miss this movie? My god, do you live in a hole? You deserve to be sent to the BOWELS of AICN, and eat not but burning hot coals and drink not but burning hot cola. How do you wake up in the morning knowing you are such a FREAK?!?
--/chewout>
Heehee. I'm so funny. Anyway, yes this movie is damn good, my friend, with Jefferey Combs (he was in 'The Frighteners', but you probably haven't seen that, either http://www.chud.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif) as a really meesed up doctor. Great flick for decapitated head erotica.

I had no idea females were so highly revered here, muchas gracias. And yes Re-Animator is certainly one of the best, Jeffrey Combs is a man to be reckoned with, so see this movie if you haven't yet!!! Education is important!
I heard he (Combs that is)was actually up for Wormtongue in the LOTR trilogy but Dourif won out, sniff sniff.........

Well, even if this is a few hours later, what the heck, envision leg humping action if it makes you smile, and as far as upgrading from lowly to badass, my job is in what some people call it's off season, so basically I commute and sit front of my computer trying not to drool like an extra from Dawn of the Dead. I like it here and plan to earn money while crusing the pleasant vistas(?) and grassy plains (?!) of Casa de Chud.

I'm kidding. I don't hate girls-no matter how many times they beat me up.
I gotta' say though, creetchie-you're a little behind the times-
I've hated DISNEY since I was BORN.
Not that I don't believe you-I just don't believe IT-they put ADS on a DVD that you can't skip?

I just read my last post, and I see how it could be conveyed as creepy, so let me add this...

VIKING BOAT OAR
03-31-2000, 11:08 AM
aha, my brother, I will join you on your quest.
All I require is a healthy payment of pie.
ahhhhh, PIE!!!
Jason Pollock
03-31-2000, 12:41 PM
I'm not flirting, Johnny-don't even know the meaning of the word, really.
See, for me to even be interested, I have to know who I'm talking to. Nobody really KNOWS anyone here-even though we try...
Also-flirting is shaming yourself instantly-and I refuse to shame myself for a woman-especially one I've never laid eyes on.
Who fucking knows-she sems pretty cool, but if we were using that as a meter, I'd profess my undying love to chenzzo, grendel, DJ, Blofeld, and Nick.
And havent you learned that chasig the poonie only gets you in trouble-you're a rock star-figure it out!
Most importantly-you should know that the only female I have eyes for is on the road with Lit right now.
However, she DID e-mail me last night...
And if you DO wish to win the creetch, maybe you should give this line a try-
"Hey...Whaddya' say we..have some champagne, eh baby? After all-I'm a man, and you're a..woman-'least last time I checked-Heh-heh...bum-BUMMMM..BUMM..bum-bumm....."
Works eeeevery tiiime...
girlcreeture
03-31-2000, 12:53 PM

So what's wrong with flirting? It's fun and not at all shameful you silly ole HAMMY you.

Weilding the oar doesn't require some sort of freaky ritual to prove one's worth does it? Cuz I'm all for freaky rituals so long as they don't interrupt my sleeping schedule, sleep is important for healthy bones and a cheery smile!
DJEvil

We have healthy smiles and cheery bones. You're covered.
Flirting is cool, IF you can do it right. I don't play the game too well, but I know enough to know that. I'm a big fan of girls, but I'm more the "cuddly-teddy-bear-oh-you're-so-sweet-but-I-already-have-a-

Jason Pollock
04-01-2000, 12:52 AM
Way back in the day, a friend and I went to see Schindler's List in limited release in Chicago. When we came out, I noticed that all of the posters in the theater had been changed to sepia-tone photos of Eddie Murphy in his Lions jacket-all Beverl Hills Cop. The posters were emblazened with the words-"IT'S ON-COP III!"
My friend and I DIED! I mean, how abosolutely UN-ORIGINAL! Remember the first BH Cop? The poster was Eddie, sepia-tone, with the words "THE HEAT IS ON! BEVERLY HILLS COP"
The second one was a picture of Eddie, sepia-tone, with the words "THE HEAT IS ON AGAIN! BEVERLY HILLS COP II"
And the third-just absurd-"IT'S ON! COP III"
It made me think of the Dennis Miller line-"That's like people shortening the title of Wheel of Fortune to simply-'Wheel' in an attempt to seem 'hip'-BUT IT'S WHEEL OF FUCKING FORTUNE!"
It just screamed desperation. And oddly enough-I never saw those teaser posters at any other location.
But to this day, every time my friends and I are putting together plans for an evening, one of us, upon finalizing the plans, will blurt-"IT'S ON! COP III" as shorthand for, "This is a fine plan, count me in, I'm proud to be a part of the endeavor."
So there you go.
And hey, the first Maniac Cop is very cool. It's got Bruce, and Robert Z'Dar,and Shaft! It's a solid, low budget thriller.
Johnny Butane
04-01-2000, 09:05 AM
I understand that now. Why do I rule the earth? Just for the obvious reasons? Warpeds gonna rock
Jason Pollock
04-01-2000, 03:20 PM
Sure, for the obvious reasons-but "hey sexy, wanna screw?" just clinched it.
If I had a nickel for every time I've said that-thought sometimes substituting "baby" for "sexy", I'd be a rich man.

My 5 essentials ( not necessarily "favortive" or "best", but essential )
- NOSFERATU 1922 - Best of the early films
- PEEPING TOM 1960 - First "modern horror" film IMHO
- NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1968 - No list is vaild without this one
- SUSPIRIA 1977 - Gaudy, surreal work of art
- SUMMER OF SAM 1999 - A surprise, but a totally differnt take on horror ... and 2 of the best acting performances I have ever seen
... for me, this list shows a variety of styles and takes on the horror film ... I have no idea how I can leave PSYCHO off this list, and I'll probably lose sleep over it ( not really )

1) Halloween
2) Night of the Living Dead
3) Psycho
4) The Haunting
5) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
I would consider these the 5 essential modern horror films, anyway. I know "Psycho" and "The Haunting" in particular are getting kinda old to be considered "modern", but I think they still resonate with modern audiences in a way that the Universal monster flicks don't anymore (i.e., they're still frightening). And before I get slammed for that statement, God knows I'm not knocking the Universal classics...They just don't frighten me.

1) The Thing - To me, the best horror film ever made. Freaked me out as a kid and no matter how many times I watch it it never loses any of it's impact or it's creep factor.
2) Evil Dead 2 - edges out Dead Alive and Re-Animator as the greatest balls out horror comedy ever.
3) Near Dark - I echo the sentiment that it may be the best vampire film ever made. Puts a nice new spin on things while keeping the mythos firmly rooted where they should be.
4) The Ring - The scariest movie made in years AND while holding on to that studio friendly PG-13 rating. I grew up in the gore soaked 80's. Freaking me out while showing nothing almost seemed like a myth to me at one time. Great direction. Great plotting. For those of us who didn't see Ringu first, that ending was one hell of a gut punch. One of the few times in history that the remake was better than the original. (IMO)
5) Any of the Living Dead trilogy - Sorry for the cop out, but I can't choose a favorite of the series and to leave it out is almost blasphemy. If you want to understand horror movies, you have to see the Dead trilogy.
Just floating outside - The Shining, Dead Alive, Re-Animator, Both Final Destinations (more pet favorites), The Brood, Aliens, and the cinematic classic, Dead Heat.
