It's MINE! MINEMINEMINEMINEMINEMINEMINE!
As the liner notes state (from Bruce Campbell, himself), this is the film that Sam Raimi originally turned in to Universal. It's widescreen, it's unrated, and it needs to be spanked.
This movie oozes with cool. Starting with the cover. Wow. Ash done serious justice (holy crap, lookit the chainsaw).
The movie itself is pretty Raimi (it's a verb now, damn you). The fight scenes are extended a bit (Ash picks off more mini-Ash's, rambles a bit with Bad Ash, the entire battle scene at the end is longer). Along with that are a few fistfuls of extra Ash nuggets of wisdom (While he buries Bad Ash: "A man's body is his own personal property...Don't let anybody try to take that away from em."). A few of our favorite lines weren't in the original cut (instead of, "Good...bad...I'm the guy with the gun," we get, "I ain't that good."). My favorite line: "Keep your filthy bones outta my mouth."
The Windmill scene is pure Raimi. It's a direct link to the first Evil Dead. Quiet, creepy, lengthy, spooky as Sissy Spacek being your girlfriend. More of the original Evil Dead in these two minutes than in the entire film (I'm impressed).
As for the original ending, it's ok. Even truer to form with Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, I guess (though I thought the S-Mart ending was WAY cooler).
The deleted scenes are interesting to watch. The original beginning is creepy, yet bewildering, compared to the rest of the movie. Ash takes on Arthur (Stick it to the man!) The windmill scene I blabbered about is EXTENDED (HELL, YEAH!). Finally, there's a scene with Ash asking Henry the Red for help (it's so-so).
This version is much closer to the spirit of the first two (...okay the second one, anyway), but the final version made Ash WAY bad-ass. This version is for anyone who desperately needs their Ash kicked (by that, I mean the true fans).
You also kinda-sorta see Embeth Davitz's boobies.
Army of Darkness (Director's Cut): $20.00
12-gauge double-barreled Remington (S-Mart's top-of-the-line): about $109.95
Watching Embeth Davitz make out with a zombie then get run through with a spear? Priceless.
This film is better than edible underwear.
