Wow. I liked the first. I did and do find it a fun ride and don't apologise for it. But it was flawed, and seemed to bear little resemblance to the games it was based on. In fact at times I was wondering if Anderson had actually played the game for more than ten minutes. But it was still decent enough.
Looking at the first image from RE2, if this is indeed real, I am filled with hope. I truly believe this will be better than the first, and be more like the games. The only scene in the first that felt remotely like the games was the last five minutes or so, but this seems to have nailed it perfectly.
I think that the directing will ultimately save this film. I don't hate Paul Anderson, but I am sure they could have found a lot better directors for the first movie. It sure seems like they have finally found someone who understands the games.
I am being a bit premature here, but if this image is real, it looks like its easily gonna surpass the original.

Whether it's real or not, I join you in anticipation. I enjoyed the hell out of the first movie when I first saw it. And while each time since it has become a little less enjoyable (fast forward here--fast forward there) I found this movie to be pretty cool. I like the game but am not an obsessive fan so maybe that's why some of the thing that bothered others didn't bother me. (Sure we would have all liked to see more "hard" zombie action, but it was still zombie action.)
For me though, all RE2 has to do is take off from where the first ended. It was such a kick ass ending and sets it up perfectly for something a little bit more like the game.

I too liked the first, a lot, and can't wait for the second one. I just hope there is more zombie action than what was in the first.
Also, I hope there are some more scenes of the zombie-destroyed city. The ending of the first really got my anticipation up for this one.

Even though I detest the first RE because it's an insult to everything I hold dear about the beloved Capcom series, I'm still looking forward to the sequel because... well, because it's new Resident Evil stuff.
Also, it helps that Anderson is not doing it.

I think Anderson's problem was -
A. He wrote the script. The script was actually, in my opinion, worse than his direction. At least the laser scene was extremely cool (though horribly out of place - boobytraps in RE games are typically either gas or object-related).
and
B. He didn't understand what made RE truly "RE" (nor did he probably care) and used it as a way of getting on the side of the studios with a stylish, slick, sexy, hip-feeling movie.
I agree with you guys, though, that image feels like it definitely captures that grungy spirit of the games a lot better. I think the new director will help make things more enjoyable and truly, if he can make the action REALLY cool, then I'll dig the film at least somewhat. The first film's only saving grace (for me) was the Kaplan character (though he was killed, he was actually my favorite of the movie and I wanted him to pull a Ripley and get all bad-ass and cool...instead he turned out just like Richie in Virus *sigh* :( ) and the ending/final-shot. Oh, Manson's score I liked, too, and I noticed Beltrami actually in parts used some of the same samples Ueda & co. used on the games. Still, I have a particular distaste with how that film was made. On its own, without RE's license, it's not really that bad, but as an adaptation of seeing the games put to cinematic life...God that was pathetic.
But yeh, RE2 has potentional. I don't have too much hope, but I'd like to think they can't fuck it up even worse...unless they decide to turn it into a musical.

I still have to see Evil Dead the musical.
That one pic of some chick in a dark tunnel didn't get me that excited but I liked the first one immensely and can't wait for 2. I thought it was written pretty well considering the source material is practically incoherent. The makers of the games weren't much for storytelling but were really good at having packs of dogs and zombies jump out at the most predictable moments. Big fan of the games though. I hope they do justice to the Nemesis. If that is where the plot of 2 is going to go. At least in the movie they can walk or run and shoot at the same time.

Dude, please don't hate on the games :p True by code veronica, it was getting covoluted and confusing, but before that it was actually pretty coherent! Its just when Capcom decided to fuck about with continuity.

Yep, if the pic is the real deal it looks good. But more importantly I immensely liked the concept artwork that was on the main site some time ago.
I didn't really care for the first film except for the last 30-45 seconds, which frustratingly kicked a lot of ass and felt like something directly out of the game ...
I want this second film to look less slick and a ot more grungy and gritty. I want the characters to know that zombies have to be shot in the head without some computer telling them. And it should be violent in more than a PG-13 kind of way. (I know the first was Rated R but I still don't know why.)
What will really make or brake this film for me is the Nemesis. In my opinion he's simply one of the greatest monsters of all time (and not just in video games). I they nail him I'll be all over this film regardless of how flawed the rest of it may turn out to be.
Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Not only should he be gutted by zombies he should also get his heart ripped out and shoved down his throat.
Thank god GRIND bombed only slightly less than GIGLI ...

I really liked the first movie.
And im looking forward to this one.
Do I mind the original film took liberties with the Resident Evil story? Not at all. Being a Japanese game, concepts like logic totally escaped the series. As has a decent control scheme. Resident Evil the videogames have more been a truckload of potential that has yet to be realized. Maybe once characters stop controlling like a tank, inventory management stops being a major part of gameplay, and stupid illogical puzzles that lead to laughably silly story sequencs go away the series will live to its potential. Oh yeah, and creaky wooden doors stop being immune to a grenade launcher with flame rounds.. At least it has Claire Redfield though. And she is like the awesome..

I'd like to know what kind of games you like? What's your example of a "logical" game?
As for granade launchers having no effect on wooden doors, well I admit that is not as it would be in real life but it is necessary for the game to work. In real life there are also no zombies, no T-virus etc., etc. As with movies a video game requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief.

I'm excited to see the next movie and don't think the first one was as horrible as most people made it out to be. If you ever played RE2 the movie borrowed enough from that game to justify the franchise title in my book. I just hope UNDEAD comes out soon on dvd to tide my zombie cravings over until Apocolypse hits the screen. Can't wait to pick up Day of the Dead tommorrow..

I've always had a problem with the laser corridor scene as in why the hell didn't anyone think to shoot up the wall to render it useless???

I don't really hold that against Anderson and Co., though because the RE games themselves heavily borrow from horror films. For me that's part of the fun.

How else can we explain that while the laser slices them to pieces, it spares the bag on the floor?
The movie in itself I thought was ok, I didn't go and see it expecting a horror movie and I don't know much about the games, so I didn't really have any expectations.

In real life there are also no zombies, no T-virus etc., etc. As with movies a video game requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief.Considering I own over 300 anime VHS and DVD programs, probably close to 700 dollars worth of manga books, and my console game collection numbers over 350, my views are based on actual hard evidence from experience in viewing/playing games and stories written by the Japanese.
By and large, realistic, logical, intelligent storylines ARE NOT what Japanese writers are concerned with. They tend to go for style and emotion over substance. In many cases, they go for cool over possible.
And suspension of disbelief is why the Resident Evil puzzles piss me off. Because anyone with half a brain is gonna be wondering how things could be that freaking stupid. Im blocked from going a certain way because of a crashed car? Cmon, 5 year olds can crawl over a car! It totally removes the feeling of this actually happening. And what is so bad about blowing up a wooden door? Because I don't use a key from another area? The game is PUNISHING you for having an IQ above 90! Jill being an expert lockpick but Barry is the one carrying the lockpick? That MAKES NO FRIGGIN SENSE. Why did Capcom do it? To keep you from going places in the game they didn't want you going. Its artificial and in the age of 500 meg plus CD ROMS and mulitgigabyte DVDROMs its COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. Spend less time on CGI sequences most people will see once and more time making a compelling game with realistic gameplay. Im sure anyone here could figure out a way to keep Jill from opening some early doors so she runs into the scary STARS eating Zombie in an order that works.
Hell, Bioware makes multi CD RPGs that take 100s of hours to complete PACKED with storylines and special events. And their stuff doesn't seem artificial and forced.
Capcom has been making videogames for like 20 years now. If a 5 year old company can make story driven adventure games that don't use obvious and artificial means to railroad players, how come Capcom can't?

Resident Evil has always been an on-rails cinematic adventure. It's survival horror action, not some free roaming epic with Mensa grade puzzles and arbitrary events.
If a car is "blocking your path" in the game, it's so that you can HAVE FUN trying to get around it by investigating various rooms and killing/evading any G or T Virus freaks that you encounter on the way. And playing RE for the puzzles is like watching porn for the acting, or a Jackie Chan film for the comedy.

I hated RE from day one. Reasone one NO George Romero. Second the plot felt rushed like it was written while Duhhbua was on a plane to L.A. I know nothing can be 100% faithfull but fucking kicking a zombie dog *quote moe from the simpsons Im choking on my own rage here*

And playing RE for the puzzles is like watching porn for the acting, or a Jackie Chan film for the comedy. The thing is.. the lack of logic DAMAGES my fun of the game. And the puzzles are PART OF THE GAME. If the puzzles suck, the gameplay is weak, and the story as presented is sillier than Jar Jar Binks, what am I playing the game to do?
If its supposed to simulate a zombie movie, it should allow me to play it, and not be railroaded. Linearity is bad, regardless of what a few million Final Fantasy worshipping teenagers might say. Im playing the game. Thus it becomes MY STORY. Hemming me in with obvious logic oversights doesn't make me have fun. It pisses me off and makes me go buy some other game that spent more than 20 minutes designing the gameplay elements and had some no talent hack that writes a Jerry Bruckheimer "quality" story for the game.
Its why I haven't bought an RE game in nearly a year, and am pretty much done buying the games till they improve them. Considering virtually EVERY DAMNED REVIEW OF THE GAMES EVER complains about the control scheme and they STILL haven't fixed it, why should Capcom get my money?
That's right, they should NOT. And they don't.
