I was reading the thread about ONE scene that knocks the air out of you and replaces it with nightmares and came across a mention of the scary Stephen King short with the Goblin on the wing. This is damn creepy, not because of the Goblin, but because airplanes are just so damn creepy and unusual. The atmosphere is at some horrible point between prosaic and sinister, and that's my problem with the film, having something terrifying happen whilst something terrifying is already there.

However, planes remain an untapped source of horror, no-one to my knowledge has really exploited the fact that planes are horrible places (I hope I'm not alone here). Is there any other location, vehicle, phenomena, happening, person, object and so forth that horror has yet to leap on and toss in your direction? Is there anything out there that horror films have not made utterly eerie or terrifying?

We have yet to see a balls-out, ultra-graphic, super terrifying movie about bugs. In particular....

COCKROACHES.

[And yes, I know that the creepshow segement dealt with them, but I'm talking ninety minutes of the fuckers.]

Oh yeah, and "Song of Kali" would be fucking devestating if done right

'Terror at 20,000 Feet' by Richard Matheson is pretty much the epitome of cool-horror-airplane tales for me (I actually like the 'Twilight Zone: The Movie' version more than the Shatner 'TZ' episode).

Horror on planes is a tough subject because of so many fears in the past and especially now. It seems just as a film comes along about a plane crash or something, an actual tragedy strikes. Look at 'Final Destination'. It made a shitload of cash, but Hollywood hesitated for a moment on its release. They even changed the title.

In terms of "where horror hasn't been before"...

I'll get back to ya. Good subject. Need to think about it.

Doh! I take that back. Something just sprang to mind...

Underground horror. Meaning: caves, tunnels, beneath the earth's crust. Claustrophobia. Darkness. There's a lot to explore down there. Hell, somewhere in Maryland they just discovered a tunnel that probably hasn't seen by man since the late 1800s.

A must read that plays on this stuff is "The Descent" by Jeff Long (apparently Gene Simmons has the rights to this for a big screen adaptation). Really cool stuff about the presence of an actual hell beneath our feet.

[Roger Corman's The Nest, without the terrifying part of course. Not a great movie, but entertaining none-the-less.

We need a "inhabitants of hollow Earth get pissed off and attempt genocide on surface dwellers" type of move. Inspired by RRotten. wink

COCKROACHES.
Can't think of the name. But my fragmented memory is telling me that a movie about fire starting Cockroaches from BENEATH the earth exists.

I havn't seen the nest, I keep meaning to rent the damn thing... but something prevents me from doing so.

As for scary places.. Churches are one. Damn creepy if you ask me. Not the Non-denominational variety, the All-American alter boy loving Catholic kinds. The iconography and various depiction of saints and there gruesome demise have always seemed a bit much for a young'n to supposed take in. John the baptists is always depicted with his severed head in his hands. The juxtapostion of the sacred and brutal deaths of these figures is indeed to me a combination that makes for serious deep seated fears.

Oh and water... Deep ocean depths... wiggy! eek!
