Anyone seen this Japanese horror flick? It looks wild, but of course it's not available in the States. I saw a DVD of it at the DDDHouse site, which I had heard about from one of these threads. Does anyone know if they are a reputable site? The DVD is only like five bucks in good old American cash.

Just received my latest order from them today. Have ordered from them a dozen times in the past, no problems.

FYI, the DVD is Region 3 so it won't play on US Region 1 players.

I haven't heard much about Uzumaki but there are a couple good reviews online:

Sorry - haven't heard of or seen this flick. What's the scoop?

The title translates to "Spiral." It's about this small town where everyone is always seeing these weird spirals everywhere, and people are becoming obsessed with them. It's more of a surrealist horror film by everything I hear. Luckily the region code won't be a problem...I just wasn't sure about that DDDHouse. Don't know about the movie either, but for something like five bucks, I'm going to find out.

I hate how Japan is kicking the crap out of us in the horror department. Too hard to see the stuff.

Uzumaki is a very cool flick. as for the DVD it depends: there are tow different DVDs out there. one is a Region 3 Hong Kong release, which is letterboxed, non-anamorphic. there's also a Japanese DVD (region 2) which is anamorphic, but comes without english subtitles.... so I guess it depends on your level of Japanese....

BTW, the movie is based on the insanely freaky manga by Junji Ito (the man behind TOMIE). it's currently being published in the US in three parts. the first part is out now and can be ordered from amazon:

The manga is fantastic, very unique artstyle!

I bought Uzumaki from DDDHouse but Johnny & I haven't watched it yet.
We checked out the trailer the other day and it looks tasty.

I'm planning on picking up Tomie up as well, when my funds have risen after the XMas depletion.

There's a few movies I want to buy but I haven't heard anything on them: Nightmare (a recent Korean release), Kakashi, Memento Mori (I belive it's more of a strange psychological drama but looks interesting), and Inugami. Anyone seen these?

So we checked it out last night (review forthcoming), and I have to say it's one of the more odd films I've ever seen. Great effects dominate, once you get past the fairly slow opening. I loved the fact that nothing was explained at the end, which is a very annoying trend I've noticed in Japanese films.

Oh, and by the way, the translation is 'Vortex', not 'Spiral'. Just FYI.

I've heard the title translated to several different words, "Vortx" and "Spiral." I guess the DVD translates it to Vortex? The more accurate translation is Spiral, athough I guess it doesn't matter one way or the other because I've never seen it listed under anything other than Uzumaki.

I still haven't seen many of these Japanese movies like the Ring. Wish DDDHouse had that in DVD as opposed to VCD. Anyone seen that in VCD? Does the picture quality suck?

I totally, totally love this impossibly fucked up flick. It's a keeper, alright.

You can pick up Ring 1 and 2 on region 2 DVD from Blackstar.com. Tartan is the company that released it. And the VCD's ok, but the subtitle translation is pretty horrible.

the cover of the Uzumaki graphic novel sports a "Spiral into Terror" subtitle, so I'm still going for Spiral... anyway, I've heard that it means the same thing as Vortex (as in, it has a double meaning: the vortex pulling everybody in, the shape of the spiral the obsession...)
