All comes down to who is running the show (no points there) and who is doing the writing. Buffy did have pretty faces but was a well-written show. This could be the same but I'm inclined to doubt.

Edited to add: Intoducing H.P. Lovecraft to a new generation is also a plus. Depending on how it's done, of course.

Unless they have a decapitated head in a silver pan performing cunnilingus on a hot blonde ('More passion!!!!'), I'll pass. This deserves a hard R treatment.

They're Buffying up Lovecraft's entire universe? It's a public domain bonanza! Cthulhu season finale cliffhanger?

He’s a teenage Dr. Frankenstein in a modern-day younger world, filled with sometimes terrifying scientific intrigue...

She's a chain-smoking French-Canadian barmaid with a flame-thrower... They fight crime!

Fuck this. I hope all involved die of scurvy.

Jeffrey Combs is spinning in his grave.

hahaha almost said the exact same line in my article.

It's funny, I just introduced a friend to Re-Animator last week. He'd somehow never hear of it (I know...) and was sold when I told him it starred "that cult nutball from The Frighteners". I think he's become a fan for life now- and really, how could you not?

The shoes may not be as big as Freddy or whatever but nailing West's tone and humor is going to be incredibly hard.

I think the premise is great (I would totally watch a "weird shit of the week" series in the HPL universe), but the demographic is terrible. And a remake of RE-ANIMATOR? They can remake any ol' slasher flick they want as far as I'm concerned (NOES, I have reservations), but now things are getting personal. You leave my splatstick classics alone!

They're making him "sexy" and giving him girlfriends. They ain't filling shit; they went shoe-shopping.

This is like a throwaway joke you see in the background of a real movie. But Cthulhu on TV?

If they do an episode that covers 'From Beyond', I'll watch it.

Eh, skewing the series to a younger demographic doesn't necessarily equal crap. I direct your attention to "Buffy", "Angel and "Supernatural" as evidence of that proposition. Thus, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Sure, I like those shows, but don't expect Whedon or Kripke quality in the slightest...

William Butler (producer of the second and third Gingerdead Man films and director of Furnace) is behind it

The only thing that could possibly be worse than this, is a re-imaging of In The Mouth Of Madness starring Kirk Cameron, Amy Grant, and Willie Aames as Sutter Cane...

Scurvy...

Hope they get it.

No doubt; however, depending on who they get to script the show could turn this into a more interesting show (for example Jane Espenson).

Alex Riviello

He also wrote the last two Return of the Living Dead movies (Necropolis and Rave to the Grave).

But yeah, we'll see who they nab.

And who was Kripke before "Supernatural"? IMDB tells me that he was the mastermind behind such classics as "Boogeyman", "Boogeyman 2" and the "Tarzan" tv series. But, yeah, I'm not going to enter this new series with high expectations. I'm just willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

Guys, it's just a proposal. Save your indignation for the pilot 'cause in all likelihood this going to die on some executive's desk.

Can't say I really care what they do with this property. Did we all forget how abysmal Beyond Re-Animator was? I don't expect it to be good, and if it is thats a plus.

Beyond Re-Animator had a kung fu fight between a rat and a penis. It helped.

Hardcore Lovecraft is too much a niche subgenre to ever have much appeal to the masses, so we'll probably never ever see an authentic, spiritually faithful Lovecraft tv show. However, given the quality of aforementioned shows like Buffy, etc., I'm receptive to the concept of a somewhat diluted, teen-friendly Lovecraft program (and it seems more like Miskatonic U - the Series than Re-Animator - the Series.) If it ever gets made it'll probably suck and die a quick death, but there's a small chance it will be good (or at least charming) enough to warrant some loyalty. Come for the hot chicks, stay for the shoggoths.

Besides, like many horror fans, Lovecraftophiles are well used to wading through piles of absolute dreck for the hope of uncovering a hidden gem.

And there's not a single female in that line-up fit to fill Barbra Crampton's C-cups. For shame.

From left to right behind West: Dawn, Angel, Willow, Xander and Buffy? Fucking hell. Calling it now that Cthulhu will appear by mid-season as a hot female exchange student that Herbert falls for. Her eyes will glow a sickly green when his back is turned. The others will try to warn him that something seems off about her. But he won't listen. He won't listen. Because dammit she's hot and she understands him better than anyone else ever has.

Same here. I hate that crap. The only good one is where Doug Jones magically took away their ability to say that awful Whedon dialog.

Anyway, who's going to believe Buffy-ized Lovecraft? Get a job in a sideshow!

I have no problem with making West a bit younger. He was already a med student in the original. Making him sexy is a terrible idea because you lose the homoerotic undertones with Dan fighting his love for West to date women and stay normal. As for as Jeffrey Combs spinning in his grave... you have got to be fucking kidding. Combs could give a shit. He'd be happy to play the principal or Herbet's fucking dad in a cameo or reoccuring guest spot.

All this discussion is for naught. This show will never get made. Never.

Sebastian OB

Timothy225
03-05-2009, 03:24 PM
Well, if this does hit the screen, I'm hoping for episodes featuring the Drama club performing "The King in Yellow", and the madness that results soon after; a sorority fish-fry being interrupted by some horny Deep Ones; Shub-Niggurath and his Thousand Young coming out of the woods, spending Homecoming with the alumni; hundreds of students invoking Cthulhu accidentally as they pray for help in passing their mid-terms; and which pledges will be sacrificed to Azatoth during hell week.

Oh, and there best be copious amounts of bloodshed and gore. I'm expecting one of the cast to be devoured by invisible demons in a packed Student Lounge during lunch.

Jake

In these post-Obama days we can no longer refer to him as Shub-Niggurath.

Phil
03-05-2009, 03:39 PM
So West won't have a pet cat named "Nigger" in honor of Lovecraft? Buuuuuullshiiiiit.

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Iove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a nigger.

Well, if he wasn't so full of fear and hate he probably wouldn't have produced such terrific work. Reasonable tradeoff, IMO. I'd rather have the damaged people becoming artists instead of politicians and demagogues.

Alex Riviello
03-05-2009, 03:55 PM
Agreed. I don't have to like or agree with a writer or artist to appreciate his work- I find it strange when people do. Hell, I don't even consider him much of a writer, either. But the imagination on that guy was unreal.

Response from a friend:

“HERBERT WEST—RE-ANIMATOR is a fresh, contemporary take on all of H.P. Lovecraft’s immortal horror works.”

Almost every adaptation is a “fresh, contemporary take” on his work and, with few exceptions, they all suck C’ock.
