Nothing happened in this movie. Williams was good , but the movie went nowhere. Did Dr. Benton leave ER for this snoozefest? I was hoping for something more. One other thing, tuna on rye.

When did it become a horror film?

It's disturbing enough to be almost qualified as horror, and I think that's why he posted here.
I have no idea where people are coming from when they say "nothing happened" about this movie. EVERYTHING HAPPENED. Just because it didn't have enough gore or exploding cars or Vin Diesel doesn't mean that it didn't go anywhere.
The entire movie is this guy's gradual descent into nuttiness. You're watching him get progressively more obsessive and demented and maybe if you'd pay some actual attention to it, you'll notice that. There IS a plot and it DOES movie. It's gradual revelations about all the characters involved.
Gah.

Ok so I just saw it, it was pretty good but it was still just, meh. It was interesting most of the time but there were a few parts that could have been picked up a bit.

This movie succeeded on so many levels for me, horror or not. One major being the writers and Robin Williams. The writers make Sy out to be the nicest guy in the world...but who is a little off and scary. They make it so suttle to where you can't place your finger on it. And Williams...well...he needs to play psycho's more. This movie was as horror as Audition was horror. But this movie was great...just divine.

This is one of my favorite films of the year.
It's such a meticulous piece of work - the script, acting, and cinematography are all pitch perfect - perhaps with a minor quibble or two.
I liked the fact that events don't unfold in quite the way most films of this stalker movie type would've. The pay-off is just a bit different than I might've guessed.
I'd say that One Hour Photo is notable less as a thriller than as a dark study of loneliness and Williams' performance is indispensible to the success of the film.
I can see why some wouldn't like it - it certainly isn't for all audiences and anyone looking for a run of the mill psycho thriller will be disappointed. But I think it might attract something of a cult following.

Most of what Sy did was extremely depressing. Especially when he bought the book that the wife was reading...that was just sooo sad. frown

I saw it this weekend, and I love it. The dialogoue reminded me of Memento, that's always a plus.
***MINOR SPOILERS***
I like the fact that he was creepy, but not in the typical Hollywood kill everyone cause they hurt my feelings way. The Sy character was brilliant, and was just creepy enough to be extremely believable. From now on, I develope my own photos!!!

The acting was good, I just think that the story was weak and getting weaker towards the ending. Bleeding eyes are the upside.
And what was the deal with the blury crotch shot on the chick at the end wearing the robe? It looked like the effect they do to the faces on COPS.

They say if you go to the movies long enough you will see yourself on the screen.
The first half of this movie is the closest to what I see my life as being, or becoming, I've ever seen.
The scene where he takes off his glasses, checks his hair, and brings out the book to impress Nina...GOD. I almost walked out, it cut me so deep.

I'm not a movie downloader, but I did see this over at someone's house who is.
Apparently the version that is being traded around on Kazaa, or whatever the hell it is these days, is far different from the theatrical version.
Someone was watching it with us who has seen it in the theaters and their feeling was that we saw a far better movie. The version we saw plays out in full chronological order and has additional scenes. He said that the theatrical version gives you more of a feeling for Sy's madness early, and thus leaves you far less surprised and disturbed by the ending.
I don't know what the official "version" that we saw was, but it sounds like this film got watered down a little but on the way to the market.
That said, I can't wait to see this on dvd when it comes out. As it is I rarely make it to the theater anymore.
Oh yeah, don't download movies! It was pure luck that this guy got a cool version, usually they're crap and the internet is old hat anyway.

There's nothing to water down. It's a coolly realised, beautifully Kubrickian nightmare that teases the eye and the mind in equal measure...
"A distressingly simple premise, excruciatingly, densely layered with the mildest of ticks, winces, grimaces and quirks (much like the pitiable Sy himself), this ominous and haunting character study builds a terrifyingly believable portrait of pathetic loneliness."
It's one of the year's best just as dolarhyde says.

I agree with most of you in saying that this film was great, BUT and I stress BUT, not for everybody. If you like your films, to slowly build their momentum and reach a really cool climax, while at the same time offering you an excellent performance, well, this babies for you. It is a bit slow, but who cares? The performances werer so believable, that it gave me the willies. Sy "the photo guy" looked like he could really exist outside of movie land, and work right at your local "SAvemart".
Bonus on that scene with the bleeding eyes! It was GREEEAAATT!

Just got back from it. I was impressed and let down at the same time.
