Does the ending of Silence of the Lambs count for the Night Vision Scare? I'm betting not since I doubt you'd forget that.

Gabe Powers
06-11-2008, 05:41 PM
It could count because it's a scary scene involving night vision, but it doesn't have much jump to it because we're looking through the eyes of the villain. Also, not a camera.

Trevor
06-11-2008, 05:46 PM
It's been overdone, but it's not nearly as bad as the waking-up-from-a-dream-in-bedscare. The night vision scare still works pretty well, actually, but it's probably best to 86 it before it gets too out of hand.

Jonathan

Good point, i'd forgotten that all the scares you listed involved cameras. I got stuck on the Night Vision part.

Well done so far Gabe, I'll look forward to reading more.

I cannot believe that Robert Altman started Lionsgate. Where did you read that?

Gabe Powers
06-11-2008, 06:00 PM
The waking up from a dream scare is another one of those things that's so far out of hand it's almost a quality measurement at this point. If a filmmaker uses it ironically he or she is clever, if they use it conventionally, they're low on ideas and likely aren't worth our time. There are, as always, exceptions.

Is their anything more sacred than a solid road mix? The possibilities are limitless, yet the end result is only as good as the users music collection. I completely agree with you on throwing in flashback tracks. Nothing like singing along to Kriss Kross to make you feel more like a man.

A large part of what's on my Sansa player is music from soundtracks. Be it actual vocal tracks, or film scores.

Road music? Nothing like listening to Brian May's soundtrack to The Road Warrior.

Sing along to? Phantom Of The Paradise. Always gets me in a cheery mood during a drive.

If you're going to hit a horror convention in Chicago, make sure you get to Fangoria's convention. From my experience its better than Flashback with both guests and content. I only went once (a couple of years ago) so I could be wrong...

Glad you enjoyed Wizard World, though. BTW, Gotham Knight didn't have any permanent booth -- they just had a signing at one point and a panel at one point. Unfortunatly, I also missed both...I had wanted to talk to Greg Rucka again myself.

RCA
06-30-2008, 06:07 PM
I went to the Flashback Weekend in Chicago (I also met George Romero, which was awesome), but just wanted to mention, they did have the Mother of Tears on bootleg. I didn't buy any bootlegs, but definitley remember seeing it there.

I briefly talked to Romero about Bruiser, which he seemed very excited to talk about how it was produced by a French company and that know one really "got" that movie(I thought it was awesome, the movie), but there was a decent size line which didn't give me much room to get into an in depth discussion.

I also watched the discussion on breaking into Independent Cinema. Romero also spoke during that along with Roy Frumkes, the guy who made Phantasm, and the Producer of the new Mandy Lane. The producer guy was kind of a dick, and trashed almost everything Romero said. After Romero explained how shooting Diary of the Dead was much easier because of CGI, and that they did not use one squib, this guy immediately responds "I HATE CGI!, I think it is bullshit!". Looked like Romero wanted to punch the dude, and he would have deserved. Overall, it was very cool for me, since I never have been to one of these conventions before. I had to meet Romero though, so it was welll worth it.

Gabe Powers
06-30-2008, 07:05 PM
I guess I didn't realize that Fangoria had a Chicago convention, I thought they only did it in LA and New York.

By the time I got to Romero he looked so spent I didn't dare speak to him beyond "pleasure to meet you". The poor guy's like, what, 70?

RCA

Yeah, he did look kind of beat. When I mentioned Bruiser he lit up though, and just started to talking about financing and stuff. I didn't really know how to respond. "You know George, my experience with French financing has been spotty too". I think it was cool for him though to have someone bring up his non-zombie movies, because I think those films get completely ingnored (I haven't even seen all of them), and he clearly invested quite a bit of time into each one.

My buddy is named Martin and had him sign his Martin poster(which he also hasn't seen). He told him to "direct me George", which was pretty hilarious, when he was taking a picture of me, Romero, and my wife. Overall, it was a really cool experience. He's actually the only reason I went to the convention, so I wasn't disappointed.

Seeing Elvira, cleavage and all, was also a bonus, even though she is pretty old! ha!

Gabe Powers
07-01-2008, 06:12 PM
The Elvira line was insane. I was fine just seeing her there. Martin is the one non-Dead Romero movie that I love, the others I either like or am totally luke warm on. I was pretty luke warm on Bruiser, though I could never be entirely unsatisfied by Romero and Jason Flemmming.

Jonathan
07-01-2008, 06:18 PM
Not a fan of The Crazies Gabe? As much as I love Martin Crazies is probably my favorite non-Dead film of his (and I haven't seen Creepshow yet before you ask)

Gabe Powers
07-01-2008, 07:55 PM
Creepshow and Crazies are both pretty good, and I own and watch them, but Martin has a little something special. Its been a very long time since I saw The Dark Half, but I'm guessing it's not much better then I'm remembering.

Brad Witzel
07-02-2008, 09:34 AM
Yeah, I met Romero and Savini as a Fangoria convention in Chicago a couple of years back and had them sign a Creepshow picture. Meeting Savini was crazy because my friends and I were just walking around and see him sitting at his table...waiting for people to approach him. No one was even there. So we got to talk to him for about half an hour before, I guess, someone else recognized him.

Agreed about Martin, perhaps it's because when I saw it I actually knew 'Martin' for all intensive purposes (I had a gothy friend who believed he was a vampire, took it rather seriously actually).

Apparently Savani's going to be at the Minneapolis convention which is within walking distance from my house.

On a somewhat related note, some friends of mine were in a mall where Bruce Campbell was signing and ended up standing behind him on the elevator.

"Dude, I think that's Bruce Campbell"
Bruce Campbell - "Someone's gotta be."

I disagree with you so much about Nausicca, but overall an interesting list.

Gabe Powers
07-11-2008, 06:44 PM
I know Miyazaki is 'untouchable', but when I read it I had visions of big budget spectacle. The animated film just didn't fullfill them. Perhaps an animated re-dux? I dunno.

Spike Marshall
07-11-2008, 06:47 PM
The thing is that by cutting out the extraneous material it allows the film to focus on the two main characters. Turning it into some massively political war film would take away a lot of the great character work Miyazaki created.

Gabe Powers
07-11-2008, 06:52 PM
But I thought the best character work was between Nausicca and the War God (I believe that's what it was called), and the sadness that came out of that relationship was really the biggest moment in the whole book for me. The ending of the animated film felt like a sprint to the happy ending, when reading the manga I really had the feeling that things weren't going to end up alright.

I hope I didn't cause any issues by posting that FARK thread here. I thought it was hilarious. Fark is only a few steps above 4chan for comments. I just thought it was funny. I figured you sent in your own blog to them. Guess not. haha

What is the point of any message board?

I like Fark because without it, I would never find half of the wierd and stupid new stories I read on any given day. It's better than digg, at least lately it is. But Reddit still wins.

An article I wrote years ago about Parrotheads (later re-posted on a now-dead Chud blog) was once linked to on the official Jimmy Buffett message board.

For a bunch of beer-swilling hippies, there was quite a bit of vitriol in the multitudes of hate mail I received.

I loved it.

I was going to post this on my actual blog, but I realize that my family members may be aware I have it. I figure this short tale is safer in the thread section, where concerned parties are sure to not look.

I've been sent all kinds of neat 'get well 'gifts from friends and family, including a quilted wall hanging, a cross made from pictures of Lucadores, a badger kachina, drawings, food, even cash money.

Yesterday I got a package from my rich, New York modern artist great uncle, Richard Artswager. Now you all don't know him, but the contents of his 'get well' package will instantly endow you with everything you'll ever need to know about him. Inside the heavy box were the two latest catalogs of his work. Big, expensively produced, hard cover volumes with full color images of his for sale art. Am I ungrateful? Of course not, the package gave me a huge laugh, and I'd like to assume he sent this with the intention of laughter being the best medicine.

Holy shit Gabe, I had no idea you lived in Tucson. I've been here since 1988 and was just watching Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore a couple days ago.
It is a weird thing to see a reference to Tucson in a movie (like in Rushmore or The Fast and The Furious), let alone having recognizable parts of the town in it.
I surprise you didn't mention Death Wish, which heavily involves the town and Old Tucson.

Gabe Powers
01-18-2009, 04:02 PM
I didn't remember that aspect of Death Wish. You know what's funny though? My grandpa was an English professor at the U of A, and one of his students was Brian Garfield, who wrote the original Death Wish book. I also forgot Tin Cup, which was filming on 4th Ave. when I was in High School, and a bunch of my friends ditched because they wanted to meet Cheech.

Great review Gabe.

The "Righteous redneck choking fist" score system is a reference to Just Before Dawn, I'm assuming?

Sadly I was one of the guys who rented the R-rated vhs, as 5 years ago, when the store I frequent was still renting vhs, I rented The Mutilator, and it was cut to ribbons. C'mon Code Red. Get on it!

Looking forward to the next one, Gabe.

High Five right back!

That's some real thinking with the fist. It's also the most bizarre villain dispatch ever. I remember reading about it years before I actually saw it. Reading does it no justice. It needs to be seen to be believed.

I am a massive fan of Hostel II as well, Gabe, also finding the torch wielding angry geek mob who were out for Roth's blood equally baffling.

Cheers for that, I enjoyed reading it immensly... was getting bored of the lists until then.

You been reading the top ten Horror lists on the usual sites by the way? My god I really don't think that half of them see enough films in the genre they are supposed to love. On the plus side I have seen THE BURROWERS pop up a couple of times... so there is hope!

Gabe Powers
01-03-2010, 02:28 PM
I fell sooooooo far behind last year on horror films I figured I didn't really have the right to make one of those lists. If I made one it would be pretty dull. Review-wise I keep seeing older films. 2009 introduced me to every Hammer Dracula flick, The Devil Rides Out, Hardware, Grapes of Death, Night of Death (the French one), and a million cheesy monster flicks.

BrundleFlyboy
01-03-2010, 02:54 PM
Sounds like alot more fun to be honest... similarly I discovered many more Gialli films, 60s Italian Gothic Horrors and the great Hammer Horrors 'Plague Of The Zombies', 'The Gorgon' and 'The Reptile'.

Am just about to get stuck into a bunch of Code Red goodies as well. Messiah Of Evil has given me a taste for American Independent Horror.

Gabe Powers
01-03-2010, 03:15 PM
I have to admit that I lost contact with Code Red out of a lack of time in the day. Their discs have been swept a bit under the carpet. I've heard The Strangeness is a must see.

I'm actually 'acquiring' Plague of the Zombies right now. I'll add those other two to the list. I forgot I also caught Vampire Lovers and Quatermas and the Pit this year too.

BrundleFlyboy
01-03-2010, 03:34 PM
THE STRANGENESS is the one with the slimy stop-motion fadge monster in a cave isn't it?

I need to bag that one... Sole Survivor, Dead Pit and Beyond The Door are well worth the watch tho' (actually Dead Pit is a bit shit... but I have a soft spot in my soft brain for it)

The Reptile is definitely the lesser off the three... The Gorgon I did not expect to enjoy so much but it has an atmosphere that is vey alluring to me.

Quatermass And The Pit is excellent... I have The Vampire Lovers on a double bill DVD with Countess Dracula but I have never seen it as I always end up watching that instead!

Gabe Powers
01-03-2010, 04:04 PM
I've got reviews of Sole Survivor, Deadpit, and BtD on DVDActive, but after that I lost contact. The Unseen really isn't worth it. Look for Synapse's Night of Death release though, it was a huge surprise. I'm working on another year end wrap up for DVDActive, but I'm losing steam on it.

BrundleFlyboy
01-03-2010, 04:36 PM
Shit, of course you have... and I have read 'em too. Having a bit of an extended edition of New Year Duur brain.

I really liked Sole Survivor, am hopping over to the old Amazon marketplace to see if I can Night of Death on the old cheapo. Cheers!

I stop over on DVDActive every other day so I'll look out for your article... my god though, you have some omelette brains over there in your feedbacks tho'. That knicker stain that moaned at you for spoiling My Bloody Valentine by putting up gory pics was a real class act. Keep up the grand work tho' Gabe.

01-03-2010, 05:28 PM
Thanks man! It's pretty clear why I come here to talk about movies when you see the DVDActive boards and talkback.

ETA: This was originally going to be 10 films, including Night Watch/Day Watch, The Life Aquatic, Superman Returns, Spider-Man 3, and Land of the Dead. It was just taking too long to write.
