I've said I'd do it for a while, but now I'm going to commit: I'm buying a 360. For GTA. And for Bully (it's never going to be released for the PC, although GTA probably will), but that's probably it. $500 on a console for one, maybe two games. Such is the power of Rockstar.
So, as a 360 n00b I have a few questions from the more experienced folks.
First, in light of the failure rate, is there any retail store in particular that I should buy it from? I've heard that some places were better than others if the 360 shits the bed, is this still true? Or if it craps out am I just stuck sending it to MS for repairs, no matter what?
Second, the wireless network adapter. The official adapter looks like it has a 3 inch cord. My living room (where the 360 will reside) is on the opposite end of the house from my wireless router, with an uneven hallway connecting the ends. My old POS laptop with an old POS wireless card frequently drops and regains the wireless connection. Is the 360 adapter very sensitive, or should I invest in a 12-foot USB extension cable so I can put the adapter in the hallway for optimal reception? Has anyone expeienced reception problems with their 360 if it's not close to their wireless router or access point?
Third, should I use the official wireless adapter, or am I better off with a 3rd party (Linksys, etc.) adapter? Money is less of an issue than ease of setup and reliability of connection.
Thanks in advance.
Addendum: It's possible I'll find other titles that I want to play that aren't available for the PC, some survival horror titles, etc. So it may be more than just GTA and Bully.
Addendum 2: Added this post to the Semi-Official 360 thread, so post any responses there.
