I was just thinking about my old SMS back home. Tons of memories. Sure, the hardware wasn't up to speed, but there were some great classics that I still play to this day. Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars, Space Harrier and especially Golvellius: The Valley of Doom, which has, hands down, the best music of any game I have ever played.

Anyone else ever own or at least play this rarely mentioned cousin of the SNES?

the SMS was the 2nd to the NES, not the SNES.

but the SMS had better graphics. Phantasy Star I was the reason every Genesis owner got an SMS converter.

Got to agree with Neaux, Sega Master was cousin to the NES. SNES's cousin was Genesis.

Games were very hard to come by around here (I think my parents had to order most from the Sears catalog) but I love(d) my SMS. Ghostbusters was fucking awesome. Double Dragon had an insane amount of flicker and slowdown.

Aah, sorry, my bad, I did mean the NES.

In my backwards part of the world the SMS dominated the NES - same with the Megadrive vs SNES... saw it in my garage this weekend and started getting nostalgic - but then reality (my wife) kicked in and I had to walk away.

Alex Kidd and Wonderboy III ftw!

I was never a big fan, but I'm really surprised SMS games aren't on the Wii Virtual Console. Doesn't make much sense to me considering the presence of the Genesis(and relatively obscure systems like the Turbografix-16 and Neo Geo).

Space Harrier is on the VC, or is it Space Harrier II?

Space Harrier II is on the VC.

I'm almost glad SMS games aren't on there. I would spend way too much money buying games I wasn't able to back when I was little. Oh, Rocky and Zillions (or was it Quartet? I forget.), why couldn't you have been mine?
