View Full Version : The Orange Box Thread
The thing is that Cassady mostly plays online with the CHUD crew. We all wear top-hats and drink tea whilst we shoot each other in the face. It's all quite civilized, you see.
My experience with the few Chewers i've fought with and alongside on the PSN has been the same.
Alex - CoD4 has been a wednesday tradition since release for me, but not only are you guys primarily on the wrong format for a good spanking - you're also on the wrong continent, making the time difference silly.
It's almost like god is trying to spare you from the inevitable humiliation of me destroying you and eating your bones. With a cup of tea.
It sounds like a cracking idea for the US chewers though. Still, i'm sure UK-based can organise ourselves if we wanted to...

Not to derail the thread any further (too late) but how would people feel about specific CHUD (MCP) nights? Like- COD4 Wednesday, Orange Box Thursdays, GTA Fridays, and so on. I can even organize something on the main page if it takes off. Plus, free crumpets to go with your Earl Gray.
I like this idea. I'm talking about the crumpets. Although the other idea is not bad either.

Team Fortress 2's learning curve seems ridiculous.
Don't worry about it. While there are classes that don't play quite like anything else there's a lot to choose from. It basically depends on your play style. If you're a rocket whore like me you play soldier. If you like camping, play sniper. If you're a grenade spamming retard, play demoman (nerf stickies). And so on.
And the levels and play-styles are so mind-bogglingly well designed that even if you just run around at random you'll end up in the action in seconds. There is really no other online game this fun for people of any skill. Want to see a ridiculous gaming curve? Try Counterstrike 1.6 and you'll get nightmares.
Oh, and we really should try setting up some regular CHUD Steam group games. I recently joined in and it looks pretty dead.

Team Fortress 2's learning curve seems ridiculous.
It's actually one of the lowest learning curves I've found in an FPS. Really the only things to worry about are what style each map is and how to get around each map. When I first started playing I just chose a Medic every round and attached myself to a Heavy or Pyro, following them around and healing them while they killed. You're helping the team, and you'll always find that it's appreciated by other players that there's a Medic around. Sure, you get backstabbed a bunch because you don't know how to check for spies yet but that comes quickly enough.
After that I'd play Engineer for a few rounds because it's one of the easier classes to play (although not to play well, but the vast majority of Engineers aren't that good in my experience). Keeping a sentry up and learning to use the shotgun and how to spy check are critical skills which you can learn without being in the middle of a huge firefight as an Engi.
After that, try everything out. You'll quickly learn which classes you aren't so great at (I'm semi-retarded as a Scout, I just don't have the reflexes to handle it) and which classes you excel at (I am told regularly how hated I am when I play Spy). Honestly, it's a very simple game.

How can it possibly be any lower than the typical team deathmatch games? COD4, Halo 3, Resistance, etc. are all much lower learning curves because there isn't any sort of class choosing or what have you. You just get a gun and start shooting people.
Trying to figure out the game objectives, learn the different classes, etc. definitely make TF2 have a higher learning curve than many other popular FPSes.

You just spent three paragraphs telling me how it has a low learning curve, all the while discussing somewhat involved class based strategies. Contemplate how wrong your initial premise is on the tree of woe.

Take into account that Me, Eric, Nate and Justin were pretty much unbeatable from the moment we started playing and you'll understand when I say that it all makes perfect sense. Every single class just handles perfectly and it only takes about 3 or 4 rounds to figure out what everything does. It really is one of the most user friendly online fps ever.
In fairness, a well-crafted, well-balanced game does not an easy game make.
Saying that, I don't struggle with TF.
I found MGO to be harder to grasp early doors. Technically not an FPS though.

We had games that were difficult, but I can't think of one game since the first few days we had it where if all three of us were on the same team and wound up losing. And now that I think of it, we actually only ever had tough rounds, not even tough games. We'd have a hard fought first or second round, and then trounce the other team.
It's entirely possible you guys are just good at the game?

Yeah, when the first one came out your FPS of the time pretty much had no story line or plot..Unreal was as close as you were going to get with something of a story, so when Half-Life came out, both the story line and graphics were top notch. There was a TF2 mini update yesterday. The TF2 blog said they're pushing the 360 update out in the next month it sounds like, so some of you should finally get to see some of the stuff that us PC folk have been spoiled with. Mark my words, the Blutsauger will change how you look at medics.
Anyway, both Dispensers and Teleporters now have 3 levels of building just like Sentry Guns. A level 3 Teleporter cools down in about 2 seconds, so it's possible to move a mass of people quickly in the CP maps where your inability to take the next point is often because you just don't have the manpower at the front. The level 3 Dispenser seems to heal you and provide metal at an almost alarming rate.
For spies, now you can gather metal to refresh your invisibility cloak. You can do this while invisible or while visible. It's not as dramatic as it sounds, but it certainly makes playing spy more fun (and I was a big spy fan to begin with).
The next class to get an actual review is announced as the Scout. My assumption is that the Scout achievements/upgrades will be in with the pack of 360 updates but they haven't said that for sure.

I feel bad for the TF2 team, Microsoft put them in a really bad place with the DLC. If they'd charged per patch that went live on the PC you'd have already paid well more than what you paid for The Orange Box total. Waiting to allow Xbox users to have 1 giant patch at the same price risks the game dying off before the patch gets there. All of this for content that they want to give you for free.

If Valve had just done the PS3 version themselves they'd be able to release all the updates they want. By letting MS be the only console they actually support their product on though, they're stuck without any leverage.

I'm totally hooked on a particular 2Fort server where they decreased gravity. It makes spying so much more fun, opening up new ways to get behind opponents while you're cloaked. Of course, it's also 16 people per team which would give Spike fits.

Until a pyro comes in and reverses a crit rocket with a compressed air blast and kills all 3 of you instantly. They've actually done a fantastic job of balancing with these patches.
Also, I forgot to mention. In the last patch if you shoot a sticky with any bullet firing gun it will break apart in just a couple of shots. No more shooting stickies away and having them still live. No more retarded demo camping.

I'll let you in on the most ridiculous and effective strategy imaginable once you get your update. Complete enough medic achievements to get the Uber Saw. It's slightly slower than the Bonesaw, but you won't notice it. Hit a target 4 times with the Uber Saw and you've built up an uber you can use.
2 medics stick together, build up one uber. Go running into the enemy, the medic with the uber activates it while the other medic runs around killing whoever he can with his Uber Saw. As that uber wears off, the guy with the saw should have gotten 4 hits and now has an uber. He ubers the other medic who runs around with his Uber Saw doing the same thing.
You wouldn't believe how effective this is in Arena matches (where you can't respawn).

Alright Justin old boy, it better be that good...
Play HL2 before EP1. Especially since EP1 starts slowly, and fairly boringly and uses weapons you are introduced to near the end of HL2.
HL2's also the strongest single player content in that box besides Portal. EP2's better than EP1 - but play the buggers in order. Get the best experience.

Anyone who has the PS3 Orange Box think it's worth $20? My brother hasn't played any of them ever and only has a PS3. The load times are craptastic and I hear the game is choppy so if anyone on here has experience with it, and an opinion, let me know.
The load times are distractingly long for a game this age - especially ported to a console. I experienced occasional slowdown.
However, Portal alone is worth the $20 - the accompanying 3 single player titles and redundant PS3 TF (it's usually fairly dead) makes it a definite winner.
Justin Clark
12-19-2008, 03:20 PM
I don't know if the patches have fixed it or not, but while the slowdown's just an occasional hiccup most of the set, it's a straight up buzzkill during the stretches with the Super Gravity Gun near the end.
That said, for $20, I'd be willing to suck it up. Even somewhat broken versions of these five games are worth that and more.
Yeah, some of the heavier physics-based combat really does slow the party down.
I don't think it's been fixed - even if it hasn't - $20!!

I bought it for $60 and I don't regret it. Yes the load times suck ass, not just for their length but frequent occurence, and it can try to judder to a stop when the action gets intense. And yes many a time I looked to the sky to curse EA and their pathetic port job. But there are still 5 great games that are a lot of fun. The absense of an HDTV will not in any way improve lag times, unfortunately. A friend of mine has it for his PS3, and he claims the frame rate problems can get pretty bad. Personally I would wait for another platform to play HL2, it is considered one of the greatest games ever made, it would be preferable to play an unhindered version.

Does the 360 version of Orange Box have like the most dedicated 12 person community in the whole world?

My cat unplugged my internet router last night right when we got on and I was too lazy to set it back up again.

I've been playing for well over a year, I've gotten better, more so with the Engineer.
I'm just waiting for the next update, as of now I'm playing Left 4 Dead waiting for the said update...
Do people still play this on the X-box?

We played it for about five months solid, and over the past month we've picked it up a few times but it hasn't stuck.

I'm with ya, I played it the other night, and just could not get that into it again.

You missed me, Nate and Mac coming into a Dustbowl Game in progress and dominating the shit out of EVERYONE.

I don't doubt it. When I played a little bit around Christmas I was the best player in every game I connected to, and that was with about nine months of not playing.

Has anyone done the garden gnome challenge on Episode 2?
I'm not normally bothered about doing those challenge things on other 360 games but I've got a real urge to nail this one.
I've just got out of the mines with him and now onto the auto-gun section. It hasnt been too hard so far, but I'm dreading the upcoming car based levels. Does anyone have any tips for this section? I'm guessing you cant just balance him on the roof or anything.
Do you have to blast him up the road with the gravity gun, drive up, get out and blast him the road again and so on?

I haven't done it myself, but i sorta remember hearing that he could fit and get decently stuck somewhere in the car itself.

Be prepared for alot of swearing at your monitor!
I find if he's well wedged behind you you can go a fair distance without worry, just beware sharp corners...
Stop and check often...the tunnel transition between levels also made me lose him for some weird reason.
Just keep him in the car...you need the car up to and including 'White Forest'; once there it get's easier.
That challenge sounds hilariously awful and brilliant at the same time.

According to the TF2 blog, it's all set to go except for the weapon upgrade textures which they do last since they sometimes make last second changes (and apparently did with this update to one of the weapons). They made it sound like we'd see it in the next week or so though, but that's PC. My guess is they'll have to spend a while getting the big Xbox patch ready after that.

Has anyone heard anything about more TF2 updates coming to the 360? I talked to some people from Valve at SDCC and they hinted at the fact nothing has come as of yet because of Microsoft (duh), but nothing else concrete. TF2 might be my favorite game of this generation of consoles so I'm still hoping for something.
A bunch of you guys have your ear to the ground for this sort of thing. Anything?

Basically, theyre doing with TF2 for the 360 what Bethesda's doing to Fallout 3 on the PS3. When all the DLC's said and done on the PC, they'll package it all up for a price.
The Microsoft side of it is basically the same story we heard long ago: Valve wanted to offer the DLC for free, MS wasn't having it. And MS is kinda right. I'm at the point where the price of the DLC would be to let Gabe Newell mickey slap me on my front doorstep, and I'd pay it to be beating dude's over the head with jars of piss before the end of the year.

Ah, thanks man. At least there's still something to look forward to. I miss the old TF2 days.

I've yet to have a multiplayer experience on this system better than the good TF2 days with you and Spike. And I've had some killer multiplayer experiences on this system.
