Indy 4 has people excited?!?!
DATE: 02/14/2008 16:50:21 / MOOD: bored

Oh look!! What a shock!!! People are actually getting excited about Indy 4. Is that a surprise? To me, no.

All I heard from a lot of Chewers last year was how Indy 4 is such a bad idea, Harrison Ford is too old, part 3 was poop, let the series ride off into the sunset, etc. More specifically, the complaints were pointed towards the reasoning behind Spielberg choice to direct this. There were a lot of arguments that he should spend his time focused on these other, more prestigious projects he has lined up.

So, what point am I trying to make? Well, two points, actually.

1. With event films like this, the real excitement factor increases greatly once you can see results
2. What is the problem with a prominent director making something fun?

First point: We know that there's a movie coming out that fits our taste. If we never saw a preview, still, advertisement, etc., we would still be in the theater on day one. What I've found is that as the movie gets closer to release, and the marketing engine starts getting revved up, word-of-mouth gets going, CHUD lights up, and people start talking about how much they are looking forward to it. So, how many people that shat on the idea of a fourth Indy movie are now saying that they are anticipating it? I'd say, probably quite a few. Really, are there chewers who would boycott this movie because they dont like the idea of continuing the series? Or would they go to the movies, hoping it would be bad, to validate their original feelings. No, people will go to see this just as they did the prequels. So why the complaints? It's not going to ruin the enjoyment of the old movies, and what's to lose? $10? 2 1/2 hours of your life?  I don't see a problem here.

Second point: Making movies is supposed to be fun. Most people looking to get into film making are looking to have fun. So why should prominent directors be expected to make serious fare all the time. I don't understand why people complain that the Stevie and Georgie would revisit this classic series. (OK, I understand why people would NOT want Georgie involved, story-wise). Think about your job (if you have one.) A lot of time it's serious business, but I'm sure there are moments where your job is actually fun, where you're getting paid to do something that you enjoy. I would think that revisiting an old experience you had long ago is a welcome change. Especially with some of the content that Spielberg has dealt with over the years.

In the end, I'm sure we will all enjoy Indy 4. There may be gripes, letdowns, or pissy reviews, but I'm sure we will all kick back and enjoy the show.

Marriage.
DATE: 02/08/2008 16:04:32 / MOOD: happy

I have a good friend who's proposing this weekend to his girlfriend. I want to give him some advice, but not scare him.

Marriage is difficult. Ask anyone who's been married for more than a year, and they'll say the same thing.

Those of us that tied the knot know this story: You were single, and you knew this older fella who'd been married and went through the divorce, and he tells you "Don't get married." C'mon, I know you had someone tell you that. You were a young, studly guy who had a nice pretty girlfriend, you played and teased with other female aquaintences, and this bitter old dude warned you. He warned you not to throw away your happiness, your freedom, YOUR LIFE. But you thought: "I'll be different. I'll be happy. WE'LL be happy."

I'm not saying it can't work. It can. But it's hard work. When it's time to make the committment, you need to be prepared for your life to change.

There's a reason they call marriage an institution. Because when you do it, you commit yourself to it.

Most importantly, when you do, make sure to wait to have kids. I had a great friend, rest in peace, who once told me this: Marriage will make your hair turn gray. Raising kids will make it fall out.

Super Tuesday
DATE: 01/31/2008 17:32:32 / MOOD: don't know

So it finally hit me: I need to vote on Tuesday.  The day is upon me to make a decision. I'm a registered Democrat now, so I have to choose between Hillary and Obama. So, I need to make a decision. However, while I am debating that, the back of my mind says "Does it matter how I vote?" and "Is it going to make any difference?" Politics just irk the hell out of me. Every time it's the same thing: broken promises, lofty aspirations, etc. And no matter who gets there, you get an entire population of people whose sole goal is to ridicule, negate, block, obfuscate, and belittle the President. And this election will be brutal, considering the historical implications, as well as the cloud of an unpopular war. It's enough to go (Roy) batty.

But, I must play my part, and make my voice heard. I just don't know what to say. Yet.

I love movies, pt. 2
DATE: 01/25/2008 16:13:36 / MOOD: in love

...continued.

My kids are 6 1/2 and 4. Before my kids, we'd do the movie shmorgasbord, pay for one, see two, three, once even 4 movies! (Jackie Brown, Scream 2, Wag the Dog, and Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil) I miss that, and those days of driving for miles to that single theater that is showing the small indie flick everyone's raving about, or the Miyazaki, but I guess that's what Netflix is for now.

Now that my ability to just up and go to the movies is severly limited, I think I just appreciate it that I am there at all, and I allow myself to be engrossed in whatever I watch. I forgive so much more, I don't try to figure out what is happening during the movie, instead just let the reveal surprise me. And I don't care if it costs $10.50 to go see a movie. I happily fork it over to have that feeling of sitting in the dark theater and feeling that rush. I still close my eyes and plug my ears so I don't see too much given away in the trailers, and I still 'ooh' and 'aah' out loud (with the occasional 'oh, sh!t!!') during the film.

God, I love the movies. Except Ghost Rider. That one really was a turd.

I love movies.
DATE: 01/24/2008 19:53:46 / MOOD: in love

What happened to me?

It seems that now, when I go to the movies, I have a much better time, and seem to enjoy movies more than before.

I think it has to do with the fact that I've always loved going to the movies. My parents took me to the drive-in all the time, we saw Star Wars opening weekend, and I remember going to the local theater and watching the kids matinees, where they'd put together a few cartoons (like the The Mighty Heroes) and then stuff like Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster.

I can even remember practically every theater where I've seen each movie. I remember the theater in Seattle where I saw Top Gun and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and the little dump where I saw a Muppets movie, where in the lobby they had a poster for Escape from New York. Which is funny, because that kind of ties into the reason for this entry.

So, I read that the idea for the Statue of Liberty's head rolling down the street in Cloverfield was an homage of sorts to EFNY. I watched that movie this weekend, and I freakin' loved it. I was totally engrossed, gasped and guffawed at the quick glimpses of the beast, and loved the fact that, since the audience is seeing what is transpiring thru the eyes of the camera holder, Hud, we are essentially the protagonist in the movie. So, when we get eaten, it was especially chilling to me. I've been thinking about this movie for days.

I read the post-release thread, and heard a lot of complaints. They are valid to those viewers, I won't argue that, but I wonder why I seem to enjoy movies more these days than before. I think it's because I've got kids.

to be continued...

Time.
DATE: 01/23/2008 18:48:59 / MOOD: disappointed

Great. Now we have the community to siphon away what little free time I already used for browsing CHUD.com and the forums.

Sometimes I envy you youngsters out there, with so much free time. Like when I was in high school, and after my homework was done, it was sports, games, girls, movies, food, and anything else. But now I remember, I had no money! So, now that I have a nice steady flow of cash coming in, I can do all that stuff and more. But wait, now I have a wife, two kids, a mortgage, a boring job, and responsibilities up the wazoo.

What a vicious reality.
