“Keep your friends close
and your family closer” these were the opening sentence in one of Vanity Fair’s feature
listing of articles about family: “When
Relatives Attack!” Although the meaning of the phrase signifies something
negative, this is absolutely true in every sense of its words.
Whether you go search where they
are through phone number reverse
services or social networking in the Internet, it’s a great feeling to have
relatives in touch.
Earlier this morning I got a
surprise greeting from a cousin via Facebook. I just got home from work (night
shift) and was feeling really sleepy (I just got an hour of sleep from the
other day). As soon as I logged in, there she was, online and with had already
typed in her message for me. Whoa! That totally woke me up. It’s been a long
time since we saw each other. Good thing I found her on my other cousin’s
friend’s list and added her immediately. After our conversation, I immediately
added followed her on Twitter and had invited her in yahoo messenger.
They are the saving grace when we
needed it most. Though they can sometimes stress us out (emotionally), they are
our strength in turn in dealing with daily life’s troubling moments. Thoughts
of them just make us fight back, especially those of our dearly departed love
ones like my mom….
The word “family” had lived with
many definitions. One, coming from Wikipedia, defines this as group of people
connected by consanguinity, affinity or
co-residence having the main
objective which is to produce and reproduce persons either biologically or
socially. Whether with kinship or somebody we call as “extended” (and whether
the definition may be something that came from old English words like
“kinship”), the most important thing that has been noted with this word is
“attachment”; and being attached can
be linked to “someone that is loved and
cared for”.
There are many forms of families,
each evolving and growing with respect and regards to each member.
Close friends can be called family
A pet dog can be part of a family
The organization you belong to is still a family
The most important: &nb sp;
Everybody, as long as there is love and respect, can be called as
a family
From time to time we meet someone, or a group, whom we later on
“adopt” to be part of our very own family. They can be anybody whom has given
us the attention that said more than just an “acquaintance”. Time and time I
have come across with such people and they have never failed us. There are even
times that they have acted more than those whom we are blood related. These can
sometimes surprising but we nonetheless it’s a blessing.
Though there are instances that we have grown attached with those
whom we consider as “extended family” still we should not let time and distance
make strangers from those whom we share the same ancestry. With the advent of
the internet even tracing their location on phone number reverse or the more popular Twitter, has made
connecting a lot easier….
For now all I can do is wait…
wait for my cousin to go online and follow me with a tweet…
