So last night I did another showcase. This one was for the all-important gods of the earth known as Casting Directors. The people who can make your career with one phone call, the people who actually get you the parts. A showcase just gives one the opportunity to act in front of several of these c.d.s. Since I'm still a newbie I don't have this giant roster of prepared material, so I got stuck with what's called a "cold read." A script I've never seen before gets shoved into my hand, I'm introduced to a scene partner I've never met before, and we have about 45 minutes to work on it and have it camera ready. So this time around the scene is from a sketch show - big and over the top. Fun to play, but is this really the best thing to perform for these people? All of them cast hour-long prime-time dramas! My charming partner and I worked on it and made a good connection, got a good rhythym going, and did a decent job. It actually worked out great because we got stuck going 17th and so had extra time to prepare. There were 6 casting directors there from 6 different offices so hopefully out of all them at least one will want to see me again!
