I have a good friend who's proposing this weekend to his girlfriend. I want to give him some advice, but not scare him.
Marriage is difficult. Ask anyone who's been married for more than a year, and they'll say the same thing.
Those of us that tied the knot know this story: You were single, and you knew this older fella who'd been married and went through the divorce, and he tells you "Don't get married." C'mon, I know you had someone tell you that. You were a young, studly guy who had a nice pretty girlfriend, you played and teased with other female aquaintences, and this bitter old dude warned you. He warned you not to throw away your happiness, your freedom, YOUR LIFE. But you thought: "I'll be different. I'll be happy. WE'LL be happy."
I'm not saying it can't work. It can. But it's hard work. When it's time to make the committment, you need to be prepared for your life to change.
There's a reason they call marriage an institution. Because when you do it, you commit yourself to it.
Most importantly, when you do, make sure to wait to have kids. I had a great friend, rest in peace, who once told me this: Marriage will make your hair turn gray. Raising kids will make it fall out.
