The only reason I hope for John McCain and Sarah Palin to
win is so that we get more comedic gold like this. Between the Charlie Gibson

it?) than pitbull. Just imagine how many laughs we’ll have in the next four

My Descent Into Horror: Jaws

My apologies for not updating for so long. I could give various excuses, but I'll give just one...I'm a lazy fuck.

I'd like to start up again by talking about my lifelong love for the horror genre. Since the hollowed month of October is almost upon us, I felt it was a good time to start my series talking about said lifelong love.

I start with a movie with a killer shark named Bruce. Of course I'm talking about Jaws. Sure, its not a straight horror movie, but Steven Spielberg does owe a big debt to the monster movies of the 50s with this holy grail of giant shark movies.

As is typical with many families, my parents would take my brother and I to the video store every Friday night to choose movies and video games to entertain us for a few hours that weekend. I nearly always found myself magnetically attracted to the Jaws tape. I was entranced by it. The gigantic shark, the swimmer ignorant of the terrible, razor sharped teeth death just beneath the surface. It was terrifying, yet I was drawn to it time and time again.

I finally convinced my parents (they used to be pretty strict about what I watched and thought Jaws was too scary when I was little) to let me watch the damned thing. I don't recall what else I did that night, but I know I had to wait for my brother to go to bed.

After watching his movie (possibly some retarded "animal doing cute human things" movie...we used to love those), it was finally time for one of the greatest events of my young life. Oh and how glorious it was. The terrible screaming woman performing a gruesome ballet in the beginning. The excellent entrance of the roguish Quint. The utter suspense of the final game of mouse and shark between the killer great white and the Orca. All leading up to one of the most amazing deaths by oxygen tank ever put on film.

Roy Scheider goes into water. Bruce is in the water. Roy Scheider shoot oxygen tank. Ocean filled with Bruce's guts.

Throughout all this, I was completely convinced the shark would show up at any moment. Richard Dreyfuss dives into the water to search a wreck? I thought the shark would show up. People on a dock? I thought the shark would break through and eat them all. Brody driving in a car in the middle of the street? I was absolutely convinced the fucker would all of a sudden make a huge evolutionary leaps, grow legs, and eat Brody...car and all.

I had been scared by movies before, but this was all new. I had never experienced such irrational fear before. The fear that the shark could strike at any second was so deep that the movie has saddled me with an irrational fear of sharks. Never before did a movie have such a deep effect on me. There are movies that I have fond memories of; ones that bring me to another time, much like a certain smell or taste. But this was the first one that truly affected me on another level. It was the first time I really felt the power of cinema. Because of this, I consider this movie to be one of my favorites if not my all time favorite.

On a sidenote:
The day after I watched Jaws, my family went jet-skiing with some friends of ours. It was honestly a load of fun...except for the times I got flung from the jet-skii into the water. I would be in the deep water and all of a sudden hear that memorable theme. I still haven't asked anyone if they could smell the poop in my swimsuit.

Sensei Jim Says: HEARTS ON FIRE!

EDIT: Apparently youtube hates me.

Below is one of the music videos for HammerFall's big hit, "Hearts on Fire."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL9mlqbG5CU

No, you've not been infected by a rare brain disease that is causing your eyes to see very magical and unspeakable things not meant to be seen by human eyes. That is Swedish Power Metal band HammerFall competing against the Swedish Womens Olympic Curling Team. Honestly, it reminds me of the video of Zach Galifinakis lip-syncing to Kanye West's "Can't Tell Me Nothing." Both are alternate music videos that feature the song in an environment that you wouldn't expect. Both are also only funny until the shock of what you're seeing wears off. Except for the part at the end where the Swedish Women's Curling Team don leather and wield guitars to take the place of the Swedish headbangers. That was pretty sweet.

However, the reason I post this is not (just) for comedic value. This video got me thinking. There is something almost poetic about seeing these two groups join forces. Power Metal is a heavily mocked form of music due to its overly cheesy reliance on fantasy themes and dated appearance of band members. Curling is a sport that is mocked for being (no easy way to sugar coat this) boring. What is up with the sweeping anyways? (Yes, yes, I know that the sweeping causes the ice to momentarily melt, therefore causing less friction in the hopes that the curling stone will go further.)

My point is that its nice to see these groups from two oft-mocked professions join forces to kick ass and take names. This had to be running through their minds as they created this plea for respectability.

Or it could just be an attempt by Acuvue to sell contact lenses.

By the by, here's the more kickass version with skeletons and swords and stuff.

Sensei Jim Says: Casablanca

I’m certain most anybody frequenting this site knows the
story of Casablanca by now. Boy
meets girl, girl leaves boy at train station, boy opens up gin joint in Casablanca,
and of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, girl walks into
his.

Of course, I’m simplifying the story too much.

The greatest thing about this movie is something it shares
with other great American classics like Citizen Kane and Sunset Boulevard.
While considered a Romance, Casablanca
also has elements of Film Noir, Drama, and War. There are also some great
comedic bits, including the running gag of a pickpocket taking advantage of
naïve refugees. While most Hollywood movies mix elements
of other genres in order to appeal to a wide enough audience in order to
maximize profits, Casablanca never
feels unnatural.

Part of what makes this feel natural is the infinitely
quotable dialogue and how the actors interact with each other. Humphrey Bogart
especially feels at home with the cynical Rick. The whip-snap dialogue rolls off
of his tongue like poetry. The one part where Bogart does feel unnatural is
during the opening montage to the Paris
flashback scenes. He’s supposed to be happy with Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa,
unfortunately at best he comes across as uncomfortable. At worst he comes
across as constipated. Fortunately the rest of the time the two are onscreen
with each other, they create one of the most dynamic couples ever put on
screen. They love each other, but Rick is too bitter to forgive Ilsa and Ilsa
is too uncertain of what path to take in her life. Both actors portray this
well and it creates incredible tension.

Special note must be made of the supporting actors. All of
them play their characters incredibly well. Karl, Renault, Ugarte, Ferrari, and
Sam (even though he is a stereotype) are all memorable characters who will
stick with me for a long time.

Peter Lorre is always a pleasure to watch. Despite the fact
that he only appears for a little bit as the doomed criminal Ugarte, his
character remains one of the most memorable in a movie filled with memorable
characters. Another great is Captain Renault, played by Claude Rains (who Rocky
Horror fans know as the Invisible Man). It would have been too easy for this
character to be played as a complete slime ball. As it stands, Rains plays the
character as a likeable slime ball, one that I sensed had something more
inside. This makes the twist where he turns against Nazi Major Strasser (played
by Cabinet of Dr. Caligari star Conrad Veidt) more believable and natural.

The friendship between Rick and Renault is another strong
point of the movie. Both men are played as two sides of the same coin.
Sentimentalists and freedom fighters at heart, self-centered on the surface.
Throughout the movie, both men try not to stick their necks out too much
(especially Rick, who says that specifically). However, Renault can’t stick his
neck out as much as Rick, due to his position in power. Since the two
characters are similar, Renault sees something in Rick’s character and
sacrifice that immediately causes him to reflect on his position in life. Rick
then sees this connection as well. Thus the line, “Louis, I think this is the
beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Two men who’ve claimed to serve
themselves their entire lives are now going off to serve a cause greater than them.

The only major flaw I could see was the acting job of Paul
Henreid, who plays major resistance figure Victor Lazlo. He is too straight,
too stiff. It is understandable that the character is noble and good. This helps
lend to the great love triangle between Rick, Ilsa and Lazlo. He also helps to
make Rick realize that there is a greater good in the world. However, Henreid
plays him too straight. In this movie filled with memorable and intriguing
characters, Henreid does not stick out as well as he should.

The one scene where he does stick out is when the band at
Rick’s plays “La Marseillaise” to drown out the Nazis singing their own patriotic
song. This is not due just to Henreid though; everyone in the bar sings the
song with so much power that the scene packs the biggest emotional punch of the
entire movie. The song is not just the French Anthem at this point; it comes
across as an anthem for anyone in Europe who believes in
freedom.

<span style="font-size: 12pt;" times="" new="" roman="" ;="">This is a wonderful movie about sacrificing one’s
selfish tendencies in order to help others and fight for freedom. While the
movie’s morals are plainly stated, it contains a good message and many
memorable scenes. <span style="font-size: 12pt;" times="" new="" roman="" ;="">Casablanca<span style="font-size: 12pt;" times="" new="" roman="" ;=""> is not a city, it is an entire world filled with
memorable interaction between the all people contained within

Sensei Jim Says: An Introduction

I wanted to start off with an introductory blog just so
everyone knows what to expect from little ol’ me.

As my bio says, my name is Jim Hill, I’m 23 years old, and I
live in Willoughby, Ohio.
Where is that you ask? Just in the bumfuck middle of nowhere. We listen to Toby
Keith and rape city folk out here.

I currently hold a 2nd degree black belt in
Kajukenpo. I have a couple blogs coming up on the subject of martial arts. One
will be about Kajukenpo and my experience in the style. The other will be about
the fighting style used in the new Batman movies (the Keysi Fighting Method)
and my thoughts on it and other “reality” martial arts. Note: If you ever see
me and ask me to show you something, I will immediately respond by giving you a
roundhouse kick to the thigh.

I love movies. Big surprise. However, my love for movies
didn’t really develop until somewhere around my sophomore year of college.
Since then I’ve watched a lot trying to “catch up” and have tried to educate
myself in the matter as much as possible. I’ll say this, it’s tough when you
have a regular job and a fiancée who does not share the same passion for
movies. But thank God for Netflix, DVR, and digital cable that has movies on
demand.

The reviews you’ll see from me here will nearly always be a
movie I’ve seen for the first time. Of course you’ll see reviews for movies
that are just coming out into theaters, but you’ll also see reviews of
“essentials” from a wide variety of genres. I’ll also be doing a series called
“My Descent Into Horror.” I’ll explain it better in my first piece in the
series, but essentially it will be about the various horror books, movies and
TV shows I’ve loved throughout my life.
