EXCLUSIVE: HUGE PLANET OF THE APES PREQUEL STORY DETAILS!

We've been following the story of Caesar, a prequel to Planet of the Apes, for almost two years now. We told you that Scott Frank was writing and directing the film, and then we brought you news that he was off the project. But Frank leaving Caesar didn't kill it dead - the project is alive and well, and in fact tonight Deadline reports that Fox has hired Rupert Wyatt, director of the little seen Sundance film The Escapist (no relation to Kavalier & Klay) to direct from a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Now we have some details about the story of Caesar, which is currently called Caesar: Rise of the Apes, and about the tons of little nods to the original movie that Jaffa and Silver have put into their script. And about how it surprisingly ties directly into the original 1968 Planet of the Apes.
Be warned: there are spoilers that follow, although fans of the original five Apes movies will not be too surprised by much of what happens in this film.
Like Scott Frank's version, Caesar: Rise of the Apes is centered on genetic research. Will is a doctor trying to cure Alzheimers, a disease that afflicts his father. He's working with monkeys to create a benign virus that can get into brain tissue and restore functionality. After his research is shut down he's left with just one chimp, the child of his most promising subject, and Will raises him at home. Young Caesar is incredibly intelligent for an ape, and over time he continues to mutate and evolve, looking less like a chimp and moving on from sign language to actual speech. Eventually Caesar ends up leading an army of apes in an uprising just as a catastrophe strikes mankind.
Some points of interest:
- Caesar: Rise of the Apes is explicitly a prequel to the real Planet of the Apes. During the course of the script TV newscasts recount the launch of a space craft called the Icarus, led by a Colonel Taylor, which eventually disappears while going around the dark side of Mars. While these aren't the exact same situations from the original film, Planet of the Apes had Charlton Heston playing Colonel Taylor whose ship, the Icarus, crash lands on Earth in the distant future.
- The script opens with poachers capturing apes in the wild. The scene is structured to recall the apes capturing humans at the beginning of Planet of the Apes.
- Caesar's mother is named Bright Eyes, which is what Dr. Zira called Colonel Taylor in the original film.
- As Caesar changes his eyes become green; this reflects the green outfits worn by the chimps in Planet of the Apes.
- In Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar led primitive apes in an uprising against man, and the biggest battle took place on a bridge. The same happens in Caesar: Rise of the Apes, except this time the bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
- There are other name homages. A female scientist is named Stewart, which was the name of the female Icarus crewmember. Dodge and Landon, also Icarus crewmembers in the original film, appear as names, but in very different roles than in Planet of the Apes. Dodge is a bad guy, in fact. There's a chimp named Cornelia, a play on Cornelius from the original film, a chimp named Franklin, a play on Apes director Franklin Schaffner, and an orangutan named Maurice, homaging Maurice Evans, who played Dr. Zaius.
- Dodge actually hoses Caesar down in a scene that recalls the 'It's a madhouse!' scene in Planet of the Apes.
- At one point Caesar is sent to a wild animal park and lives in a monkey house. There we see that the original film's social structure, where chimps, orangutans and gorillas have their own strata, is in place. Caesar manages to unite them all, though.
- By the end of the script humanity's downfall, which is tied to Caesar's origin, is in place. Caesar is presented as struggling for freedom, but he's unwilling to be violent. This makes the ending confused, as the other apes rampage while Caesar behaves non-violently.
- In the original Conquest of the Planet of the Apes Caesar makes the other apes leap forward evolutionarily just by existing. Here there's a more scientific explanation. Also, Caesar's slow mutation explains why the apes in Planet of the Apes are bigger than and look nothing like modern chimps, orangutans or gorillas.
- The ending is suitably bleak in a traditional Planet of the Apes way, while leaving a big opening for the next chapter.

This sounds kind if awesome. I'd love to see a new good Apes movie... I'll keep my expectations low, because it'll never be as great as the first one from 1968 (on of my all-time favorite movies). But hopefully it'll be way better than the Tim Burton one...

Has any film with "Rise" in the title ever actually been good? I'm genuinely trying to think of one. Rise of the Silver Surfer... Rise of the Lycans... Rise of Cobra... Rise of the Machines (well, it was OK)... I'm drawing a blank. Change that title, then I'll be happy.

If every sequel/prequel in history is anything to go by, a film that spends a large ammount of time reminiscing about earlier entries in its series probably has little merit of its own, and is definitely trying way too hard to convince everyone that it's "legit". Plus Planet of the Apes is partly reliant on you not knowing much about these events, so it looks to me like it's two strikes already and there's still a long way to go.

"Has any film with "Rise" in the title ever actually been good?" "Rise" has almost as bad a track record as "Legend."

This sounds awesome. As a fan of the original series, this was what I was hoping for when they did Apes in '01. Any chance Fox will actually let something that sounds this good to happen?

If they could get Burton to direct, this would be magical. Oh, they got Scott Frank... I don't trust anyone with two first names...

This is already immeasurably better than Tim Burton's POTA abortion.

Will this be in 3-D like everything else seems to be???
Tim Burton already set this franchise back 10 years. How could anyone want him back.

Little seen Sundance director? Sounds like Fox was someone they can control.

This all sounds really exciting. But, is it really a prequel? Seems more like a reboot or perhaps a "preboot." But I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.
I mean, was Nolan's Batman Begins a prequel to Burton's Batman just because they both have Bruce Wayne?
Yeah, this sounds like a reboot more than a prequel since it will be covering/re-imagining events we've already seen in Conquest. Part of me wants to get excited for this but, well, it's Fox....

"Young Caesar is incredibly intelligent for an ape, and over time he continues to mutate and evolve, looking less like a chimp and moving on from sign language to actual speech." - So the apes become intelligent and learn to speak in one lifespan because of a virus? Wow, that's incredibly fucking stupid, even for this cornball franchise.

Still waiting for a theatrical version of "Stop the Planet of the Apes, I Want To Get Off!"

'Caesar: Rise of the Apes is explicitly a prequel to the real Planet of the Apes.'
Well, that settles it: Cornelius and Zira changed the timeline, the Caesar statue at the end of Battle is crying because man and ape are living in peace.

CGI chimp or midget in a monkey suit?

Luckily, TIm Burton decided he wants nothing more to do with the Apes films. And if they're putting in so many nods to COnquest and POTA, they's better be brave enough to hire an actor who can mimic Roddy McDowall perfectly. And keep the makeup as 'primitive' as it was in the original films, please!

Good news about the director. The Escapist was a bit gimmicky in that short film/first time movie attention grabbing way, but was extremely well made and stylish without being a Burtonesque art department explosion. He's definately a big step up from modern era Burton. Scott Franks a solid writer though, so it's strange he's been dumped in favour of some other dudes.

?! Why bother with the icarus and taylor at all? The great mind-fuck of the 70s was that taylor went to a future earth ruled by apes and delivered the means for them to return to the 70s and create the means by which they rule... see what I mean. Any who, I grew up in the throws of the original and will watch whatever they come up with. It's like a siren's song, dammit!

Finally, a good news about Apes! Anything can be better than Tim Burton reinvention! But I want a intelligente screenplay, please! Hollywood have a good cinema industry, but your writers... Welcome back, Caesar!

This sounds fantastic, and maybe it's a good thing to have a new director on board too. This could be the new APES movie that fans have been waiting for...lets hope so anyway.

'The Escapist' was a solid flick.
Hoping for an oppressive, stripped down look comparable to 'Conquest'. Please, no craptastic CGI or overblown action scenes. Could be a great run-up to restarting the franchise. Then perhaps a cartoon and live action series like the original franchise? Actually, don't go that far.

I'm a big fan of the original movies series and have to say this sounds interesting. Hopefully, in the right hands, it'll make for a good movie. Anything has to be better than that self-indulgent mess Tim Burton made.

The Icarus isn't the name of Taylor's ship from the original film. That was just a name coined by fan Larry Evans in the 1970s, which was later used by a model-making company. The ANSA documentary from the recent Planet of the Apes Blu-Ray set revealed the ship's name to be Liberty 1.

About time...as long as they ignore the Tim Burton diaster it will be great. Waited 30 years for this...lets kick this up by making it 3D...better bang for the buck..as for the nay sayers...I am sure your best movie pick would be a Barbie movie...There are a lot of fans out there waiting for this movie...don't screw it up...may there be many sequels to come

C;ROTA - Due to the success of Avatar, the production staff is operating in high gear to go ahead with this enormus project slated to be highly budgeted as an epic! This will be an outstanding movie and will star Leiam Neeson. The property i work at, 1/4 mile of it is slated for the outdoor mega complex with special effects involved. Battle scenes will most likely be like that of Lord of the Rings! I cant say anymore although i didnt sign an agreement to stay mum i dont want to spoil & jeperdize my job.

First, dodge CGI. 2nd : could you put some red/blue faced mandrills and female gorillas? 3rd, don't nail Burton to the cross. After watching a buried Statue of Liberty, what else could be good without copying? I think showing an Ape'Braham Lincoln statue is explainable in a would-be sequel if the general chimp managed to get back on time B4 Lincoln times. Unless the CLOCKS were damaged by the oddities of space as clearly shown at the Oberon (showing a FALSE trip to the past and actually forward into a parallel future?). The make-up and apes' attitudes were right in spite of female apes with eyebrows looking like Michael Jackson!!!!
I think Burton did an outstanding job but he changed it significantly. kind of like Ang Lee with the Hulk. It's probably better to return to something closer to the original. can't wait.

nice that they have nod's and james franco! =D
well glad we see the orgins to the orgial 1968 version with one of the best twist ever. thank you Rod Serling!

I am an immense POTA fan, in fact Conquest was the first one I saw in a theatre in the early 70's. I will see this movie regardless, but I am leary of the CGI/makeup for the ape characters. Unequivocably, the makeup used in the original series was what really sold the characters, along with the great actors involved.. If they can't pull that off, it'll be crap. It was the one department that Burton did well in, he actually had ape training camp for the cast.

My god, yet another spin on a movie that has several installments. Unbelievable, and you retards are going to go see it, because you're just as shallow and lifeless as these freaking remakes.
This sounds like a remake of
'Conquest' and 'Battle'. Hopefullly the apes will liook like they did in the original 5 films. Didn't like what Tim Burton did with P. of A. ...
What they really need to think about doing is incorporating the cat and dog plagues and the actual nuclear armageddon that leads to the downfall of the human species and to the subsequent rise of the great apes. I've got a scene in my head that shows Caesar leading a group of escaped ape slaves into the hills against a backdrop of ICBM's soaring into the upper atmosphere. And yes, they could show the launch of the Icarus, perhaps from a space station in orbit around the earth. That would provide the best, most dramatic ending... to get to see what we never saw before the original film.

ever since seing the final scene with the statue of liberty i always wanted a proper back story which explained how it all came to be! looks like this is it...lets just hope we get to see aldo saying "no" . if necessary why not spread the whole story over 2 or 3 films to explain everything. please no happy ending since it would cancel the opening of the original!!!
