CAPTAIN AMERICA'S INTERNATIONAL CO-STARS: THE INVADERS

Last summer I talked to Marvel Studio's Kevin Feige, and he told me that The Invaders would appear in Captain America. In the original comics The Invaders were a WWII superteam that counted Captain America and Bucky amongst its members. In the movie universe it looks like The Invaders will be a European team that works alongside Cap. The question at the time was would The Invaders just be a cameo or would they have a real part to play in the movie?Yesterday I talked with The First Avenger: Captain America director Joe Johnston at the press day for The Wolfman, and he revealed to me that The Invaders were going to be a major presence in the film. 'They'll be in the entire second half,' he said.
That's a lot of screen time that Cap will be sharing. Johnston also told me that The Invaders will be six members strong, so if you add Bucky and the Red Skull The First Avenger: Captain America might very well feature nine costumed characters, surely some kind of a record outside of a straight up team franchise like X-Men.
Earlier during the press conference Johnston had said that his Captain America would be played (hopefully) by a newcomer and that he would surrounded by name actors. Could The Invaders be roles for better known actors? The European team is definitely included as a way to sell a movie with Captain America overseas (Feige said as much at Comic Con), so why not throw some name actors in there?
Who will be on The Invaders? Johnston wouldn't say, but here are some possibilities, based on the comics:
The Human Torch. No, not that one. The original Human Torch was an android who appeared in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. At Comic Con Feige confirmed that while Fox owned the Johnny Storm Human Torch from Fantastic Four, Marvel Studios retained the android Torch. And in fact Feige used the android Torch as a way of explaining why the Marvel Universe's WWII is so distinct. Don't be too surprised if the Torch shows up. He had a sidekick named Toro, who had the exact same powers as the Torch. It may be possible that Marvel uses the Toro name to avoid confusion with the Fantastic Four character (and to make the Torch Spanish), but I think it would be great to spit in Fox's eye and use the original Human Torch.
Union Jack. I'd more or less bet money on him being on the team. In the comics, Union Jack is an older adventurer who was active in WWI. He had no superpowers but wore a bulletproof outfit and was exceptionally athletic.
Spitfire. Union Jack's daughter, Spitfire can run at superfast speeds, leaving a trail of fire behind her.
Blazing Skull. A really weird character, Blazing Skull is a guy who trained with Chinese monks and has superhuman strength and can make his tissue - just his skin and muscles! - invisible, leaving the appearance of a walking skeleton. He wears a flaming skull mask. The Blazing Skull was an American in the comics, but could easily be made into a Chinese character. The only downside is that visually he's identical to Ghost Rider.
Silver Scorpion. Another American who could be changed into a European. A woman who is a jiu-jitsu master, Silver Scorpion had a sting-ray built into her suit. Despite being called the Silver Scorpion she had a yellow costume with a red cape and blue boots. A massive redesign would be needed.
European Defense Initiative. It's also possible that the film will go with a concept floated in The Ultimates, the EDI. Although set in the modern day and not in WWII, EDI is made up of heroes from multiple European countries, with characters like Captain Italy, Captain Spain, etc. To me this would be a cheap and easy cop out, though, and if The Invaders are important in the second half of The First Avenger: Captain America, it would make more sense to create full characters for them rather than simple Captain America knock-offs.
Namor, The Sub-Mariner. Incredibly unlikely, but possible. Fox, holder of the Fantastic Four characters, has Namor, but might that just be the Silver Age version? Namor actually first appeared in Marvel Comics #1, in the same issue as the android Human Torch. He was a founding member of The Invaders (which was actually called The All-Winners Squad back in the 40s), so he really belongs on the team. Of course even if Marvel does own the Golden Age version of Namor (which is essentially exactly the same as the Silver Age version), they may not want to confuse matters by using him in The First Avenger: Captain America while he might yet turn up in a rebooted Fantastic Four or his own film.
Others. There's a whole host of WWII characters that could be used, from The Thin Man - one of the first stretching superheros, beating Plastic Man to the punch - to the Blue Bullet - a Polish Jew. It's possible that the film could dip into this massive, mostly untapped well of characters and really surprise us.

Not that I wasn't going to see this already, but I want Union Jack in this movie...and then his own movie. Look him up on Wikipedia and tell me that costume (uniform?) kicks a ton of ass. And he arch enemy is an English Vampire that conspired with the Nazis. Nuff' said.

Wouldn't be surprised if Marvel also pulled form the All Winners Squad a few like The Whizzer(another speedster) and Destroyer (who recently had a limited series). If going for international composition, probably won't see Miss America, though.

Devin, as they're trying so hard to explain the reason why Captain America wears a costume, do you think all of sudden a group of costume heroes will pop up in the second half of the movie?
IMHO the Invaders will be a group of regular soldiers and patriots from different European countries(maybe with some nice code names) helping Cap in his mission. A Marvel version of the Dirty Dozen.

We're looking at this the wrong way guys. Marvel wants to introduce characters that they can pull from later for other other projects.
Union Jack is a given.
You need a girl or two.
Venus from Greece (Agents of Atlas)
and or Spit Fire.
You need a French hero
Peragrine would be the choice here
Canada needs a hero but Alpha Flight is stuck with FOx (X-Men Related) so I'm stomped.
Russian- Red Guardian or if we're lucky Dark star could fit here.
Africa: We know Black panther will be in the Avengers animate movie. So introducing a Black Panther here would be perfect.
So any ideas for France and Canada?
also Toro for Sain would work.

Counting Cap and Bucky, that's four members left; Union Jack's a given (John or Brian, I wonder?), he's of a similar powerset and makes an obvious counterpoint to Cap himself. Don't know about the rest (they're described as being representatives of European countries, which the Invaders never really were in the comics; foreign membership was primarily two Brits and an Atlantean; maybe they're planning to make up a few new characters to represent France, Poland, or wherever?).
I'll be interested to see if they're planning to bring in other characters with genuine super-powers. I mean, if the Brits have a chick who can run at the speed of sound, how impressive does that really make Steve look? Conversely, having such obviously superhuman people might give Steve a chance to demonstrate just how important he is, even if he's not the most physically powerful

Devin, I think that 6 members team would INCLUDE Cap and Bucky, so with the Red Skull you're only looking at 7 characters. So we'd just have to figure out who the other 4 Invaders are. At this point, I would guess that Namor, Union Jack, and Spitfire would all be good guesses. I also agree with AntoBlueberry -- while they might all use the names and have the abilities, I'd be shocked if they were all in costume.

Wow..."Captain America should be BLACK. Anything other than a BLACK Cap is nothing but white-American super hero racism propaganda!!"
Captain America is white you moron! Yes, there are quite a few white superheros, that is called a Majority. But it's not like there are no BLACK superheroes. So your saying it's racist if they don't CHANGE the color of SEVENTY FIVE year old character from white TO black? Not only is that IGNORANT, it's fucking RETARDED. YOU are a hateful idiot. And you should either stay off the internet or buy some comics. I hope that they get Nic Cage to play Luke Cage if only to piss you off you knucklehead moron.

there was a black captain america , an earlier super serum test subject than steve rogers, which made him the original captain america in a sense, but he was only retconned into cap`s origin a few years back, having never existed before. while it would be interesting to have a look at the earlier cap tests, it wouldn`t make any sense at all for the steve rogers cap to be black just for the sake of creative casting or to use the black captain as THE captain america.

Captain America should definitely be black. And a woman. In fact, Captain American should be a lesbian, black single mother. With some kind of physical challenge, such as being blind and paralyzed from the waist down, and preferably with Tourette's.

The International Conspiracy to Make Captain America Black has been revealed.
The civil rights movement, the 40 hour work week, Black History Month, MLK Day, The War on Christmas, NPR, Sesame Street, the public library system: all part of the plot and now, thwarted by one brave unknown user with the temerity and guts to speak truth to power.

Union Jack is awesome. He has that whole assassin costume that allows him to lurk in the shadows undetected. Undetected....except for that giant gaudy red Union Jack emblazoned across his torso, that any enemy could spot from several miles away. His daughter Spitfire has the ability to run at super speed, and when she does “a trail of non-damaging fire appears behind her”. Man, that sounds useful. You wouldn’t believe how many times in my daily life I’ve needed fire that doesn’t actually produce heat. Blazing Skull can turn into a walking skeleton, but then wears a blazing skull mask over his already skulled up face. He one ups on his scary form, kind of like a grizzly bear with a really sharp fork for a paw. These old school heroes sound awesome Devin, but you left out a few of the classics. BLUENICORN – a WWI veteran who can turn into a unicorn every time he touches something blue. AWAKEGIRL – a young lady who can turn her eyelids invisible, so it looks like she is always awake, even when her eyes are shut. DR TOAST – a mystic with the ability to cook a loaf of bread by reciting the lord’s prayer backwards. HOPPYSACK – a scientist with the ability to call forth an army of angry warrior rabbits, simply by slamming a car door on his nuts.

Comment #29 (Posted by Peter Sorensen)
Actually, the "black Cap" in Truth (that's the name of the graphic novel in which he appeared) was part of a test group to RE-create the super soldier serum after Dr. Eskine was killled (during the Rogers experiment). They even say so in the book. Thereby making Steve Rogers the first, original Captain America.
Just sayin'.
Also, DESTROYER!!!!!!

"A bit of Inglorious Basterds meets Watchmen's The Minutemen?" Exactly mobbdeep, like Basterds but with less monologuing and more action, that doesn't sound bad at all. And super action at that. Directed by the man that made Rocketeer, no less. This could be very good. And you can't really get any creepier villains than ones dressed in nazi uniforms.

O.K. so Namor has tiny wings on his feet and can fly. Cappy has little tiny wings on his head. This has always messed with me since I was a little kid trying to figure out these strange things. Will these tiny CG wings flap? Does it have anything to do with his flying? Namor is a cool character, and I would love to see him included, but with Fox owning the flame brand through FF, I can't see it happening. Toro and/or old school android Torch is a shoe-in. Union Jack seems obvious. As far as other guys, who knows? I am one who hopes they just don't start making shit up, there's a ton of golden age people to chose from. I have faith that the designer of Bobba Fett will make this something we want to see. Go go Joe Johnston!

Devin - Namor is at Universal with Mostow. Either way, it's not a Fox property.

The Invaders should definitely be European... start off with Robbie Williams and Take That(I want you back, want you back), the lead singer of Tokio Hotel(I believe his real name is Bill and his stage name is Gay!!!) and his destructive emo wailing, and throw in some T.A.T.U in the mix so they can use there super lesbionic powers to turn all our straight women into box munching, pillow fighting(and biting), threesome with you and there best friend begging, Captain America fans.

I think WWII is perhaps one of the only historical conflicts that logically requires a 'team' of heroes; international members a plus. The Invaders is such an effective name, as well...
Of course, if the group isn't a band of Avenger/X-Men/JLA-type costumed adventurers with names and powers akin to their comic book counterparts...they're not really the Invaders, are they?
That's not to say I don't understand the decision to compromise the original group with something a bit more logical (given that this is a single character's origin story, after all). And I quite agree with the idea of a Marvel-ized Dirty Dozen, a motley crew of Basterds as it were.
But.
I'd call the team something else. I'd owe the source material that much, I think. Because while a film co-starring Namor the King of a mythical undersea city and a flying firey android (to name a few) would be very cool, it would almost entirely eliminate the possibility of those characters having solo-films, which Marvel probably doesn't want. Nor would I suspect, as stated in the article, that Marvel would want to confuse people with two Namors, one in Cap's WWII and another in a rebooted FF...even though it IS the same character, which I think would be great so long as the connectivity between the Invaders film (rightfully, in this line of thinking, the title would probably change from the solo 'Captain America' to the plural 'Invaders') and the FF franchise would be handled in such a way that neither film relied on the other, which wouldn't be difficult given the enormous time gap.
But I digress.
This is a Captain America SOLO picture, without costumed Invaders mucking up the continuity and freaking out an audience by introducing information and all at once employing it in the narrative (which is almost always an earmark of poor storytelling, if the intent is to present that info clearly).
Should be interesting either way, hey?

This sounds like a very poor idea. The movie should focus upon Cap & Cap only.To bring in a team of costumed heroes will only diminish Cap's presence & uniqueness. Maybe they can try this concept in a later film but not the first CA movie.

Lets hope they cast Union Jack correctly Cristian Bale perhaps, or gerard butler, or daniel craig,or Jude law or the english guy from true blood but definetly not jason statham. Union Jack would make an excellant movie and hopefully with him being a more obscure character and english they may not completely fuck it up by hollywooding it up and focusing on FUCKING EMOTIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS hopefully they would give it to an decent director like rodrigeuz or synder or tarantino or jean pierre jeunet or tim burton. id say cinematically Union Jacks suit could end up looking cooler than Captain Americas. however in the captain america movie i hope they dont cop out and make the invaders into simple multi ethnic soldiers that would suck . 1930s Super war heroes vs 1930s Super Nazi Villains is going to be amazing cant wait lets hope they make this one cooler ,darker and more muture orientated like the dark knight and not soft, overemotional and childish xmen. they need to make this movie with comic book readers in mind. turn the movie into a comic (sin city, 300,watchmen) and not a comic into a movie (superman returns, xmen, wolverine, fantastic four1/2). lets hope these Marvel money dont fuck us over and make a shiny all american kids movie

Namor's got to be in it - how cool would it be to see him go against another super hero when he inevitably becomes a "bad-guy." With the large number of movies Marvel is projecting, it's a certainty that they will all be intertwined in each other's movies. Namor's always been a fave of mine and they need to cast it right - People have been saying Zach Quinto and others, but for me, the dude that's is dead spot-on for it is James Ryen. An unknown, for sure, but I met this dude on set, and he's the spitting image of Namor. Super nice guy, but just carries himself like a monarch. Tall and built too, so no need to stretch the CGI for him. Watch for him to sneak into the mix if Namor is part of the movie.

Micheal Fassbender (inglorious basterds,300) should be in for the running for Union Jack although hes not english , but he is a great actor and he has the correct look. Also Guy Pearce would be pretty sweet for the role to.
