DUNE GETS TAKEN

I imagine the massive success of Avatar, which liberally borrows from Dune, must have resurrected the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert's massive and classic scifi novel. The film was to be directed by Peter Berg, but he fell off and went on to Battleship. Many of us thought the picture was dead, but it turns out that a new director has been brought on board. A very unexpected new director.Pierre Morel, helmer of Taken and District B-13 (and a decent cinematographer before that) has been brought on to direct.
Huh?
Okay, I haven't seen Taken (yes, I know this should be remedied), but unless I'm missing something, Morel's filmography doesn't hint towards him handling a socio-religious epic. This obviously means that the film is being envisioned as more of an action piece, and that we'll probably see Maud'dib being much more of a bad ass. Maybe he'll parkour his way onto the back of a sandworm.
This all feels wrong to me. Deadly wrong. Of course it's I who could be wrong - Morel could have something in him I've not noticed before, and maybe an action take on the material will somehow work. But this is smelling more and more like a disaster by the moment.
All of that said, we'll see if this goes anywhere. I'm guessing Dune is a project whose director may change another time or two before all is said and done.

your right dev, the director WILL change. It will be forever until this even goes into preproduction..i like morel a lot, but he has never helmed anything close to this huge and no studio is going to throw a ton of money at him to do this unless he's just a "yes man" for the producers

"Maybe he'll parkour his way onto the back of a sandworm." I'd pay to see that. But the rest is just odd. Maybe hollywood thinks another frenchman can handle big budget summer films just like whos-it on Clash of the titans and whats-it from The fifth Element. The English (wankers) had their turn, now its the frogs chance to show off.

Alejandro Jodorowsky needs to direct this with H.R. Giger completing the design.

Yeah, let's just give Jodorowsky 200 million dollars and the key to Jim Cameron's toolshed. Chances are about 99 to 1 this scenario ends in total disaster, but if that 1 comes through, hooooo boy!

taken isn't very good

I completely agree with Devin. Dune needs to be 'Lawrence of Arabia' of sci-fi films, not a dumb action flick. And considering they hired Berg first and now Morel, that looks like the film were getting. A dumb Holywood action movie.
As things look now, it seems they'll half ass it. Again.

Morel has done pretty good, the stories he has handled so far hasn't been very big but he has made them well. He should get some more frenchmen involved as producers and creators, people like Besson, Moebius, Jeunet and Caro...

There is no doubt in my mind Morel is a huge directorial talent. District B13 and Taken are easily two of the best Action films of the last ten years (let alone the last few). With that being said Mr Faraci is right that this probably isn't a good idea in a broad sense but Morel will bring the action goods.
Its a total left field choice but I have to say i'll gladly pay to see what Morel can do which is a hell of a lot more than I can say about a ton of hollywood hacks (Ratner, McG, Fuqua, Neveldine/Taylor)

You get nothing but a DIRECTOR'S announcement and you're already declaring the film a "disaster"! You literally know nothing else! Jeez, you just NEED something to rail against, don't you? Dark Knight=Avatar=Dune. Fight power, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

Taken was painfully bad. B-13 was fun. . . but bad.

Taken was a fun flick - Liam Neeson really made that movie, and I'm not even really a fan of his. It's not that I don't like him, but that was easily his most commanding performance. And the direction was good. Sure it was implausible, but it was entertaining.

I wonder if Devin can even eat a bowl of cereal without thinking about Ava-fucking-tar.

Wow, who'da thought the choice of director would have any influence of the final quality of a film. Morel is a very odd choice if they want to respect the source - perfect if they want to try to play simplistic, oddly self-important and ultimately disposable. The Avatards will love it.

Dune is a character book so directors who care for action and visials at the expense of characters (Peter Jackson post LOTR:FOTR), need not be considered.
I don`t think the book is unfielmable or hard to understand. It`s just that they have to approach it as character-driven sci fi rather than shit blowing up with some romance type of the deal.
