FIRE ALL GUNS ON THIS SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO TRAILER

I have no connection to Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato, a Japanese cartoon about... well, a space battleship. But I know that a lot of you grew up watching this show and will be incredibly psyched to see that it's getting a live action version, although it looks to be decidedly mid-budget. It'll be interesting to see something more than this teaser, which hits the iconic beats - hell, even I recognize the captain - but does little else.

I have strong memories of watching this show as a kid, but all I can remember vividly is the look of the ship and the captain. The trailer delivers in that regard, I guess. Might be interesting, but I don't have the attachment a lot of others have.

God I hope this gets a release over here as Starblazers! That would be awesome :D (No not a remake, just a rerelease :D )

It's a gamechanger. Or not. Will probably be average - like all anime turned live action from Japan, they feel the actors have to act like they are recreating a scene from a manga/anime, over-acted and flat performances. Film is not Kabuki. Nodome looks the same. 20th Century Boys wasn't bad, but still - the main market is Japanese otaku manga fans who want see their favorite scenes come to life. A shame really. I would love to see a serious non-hokey version of Gatchaman or Atom one day. Would be very cool. If you can get hold of it, the new version of Pluto ( the Astroboy story) has just finished it's conclusion as a manga in Japan. very dark and serious. Retells the "Greatest Robot in the World" form the Astroboy story, but much darker. Excellent movie material methinks.

Some things ought to remain as works of animation. YAMATO is one of those things. Loved the series, can't even summon the courage to watch that cosplay looking trailer. Just from the still above it looks like a lean, mean, childhood raping machine.

Come on, White Ribbon review. Best film of the year.

With Shawn, I hope this does inspire a Robotech movie too! While Starblazers is my favorite, Robotech would be fun as well. So, Bigg Mixx, you have already decided you are not going to like a movie that has not come out yet? Which part of your childhood are you anticipating that this movie will rape? Fanboy backlash perhaps, or more elitism? Kinda like Tundro up there who already knows what it is going to be like and snatches two more obscure concepts that he would apparently prefer to see instead of this one. Well, for me ... I can't WAIT! Maybe I will hate it, maybe I won't ... but I won't know that until I see it. If it fails, crazily enough, my childhood will still be intact because I will always have the animated version. Maybe I'm just not cool enough that way.

To be fair, I know I would be much more excited about this if I weren't living in Japan, and a) had to put up with Kimura's face plastered everywhere and see him on every second ad or crappy drama on TV (sorry, but the SMAP guys just don't cut it as actors for me) and b) watched/sat through so many failed attempts at anime/manga as film (Casshern, Devilman etc). If it's good, then it will be a pleasant surprise.
