GREEN LANTERN WILL BE MORE THAN A SECRET ORIGINS REPRINT

One of the problems with the modern superhero movie is that the first film is often a protracted origin story; what took comic book creators of the Silver Age about 8 pages to tell takes current directors about two hours. But that won't be the case with Green Lantern, insists star Ryan Reynolds.Reynolds tells the mooks at MTV: "It is [an origin story] to a certain degree, but it's not a labored origin story, where the movie [truly] begins in the third act... The movie starts when it starts. We find out Hal is the guy fairly early on, and the adventure begins."
Ironically, Green Lantern is a character, unlike Superman, Batman or Spider-Man, who could probably benefit from a detailed origin film, if only to set up his very unique universe. Still, that can be done in the context of an actual story, which was something I thought Iron Man did pretty well. One day though we'll get a superhero movie that opens with the hero already established. Maybe that'll happen in the long-awaited Ambush Bug movie.
Let's start a rumor that Reynolds is attached to star in X, based on the short-lived Dark Horse superhero from Comic's Greatest World, on our message boards!

Batman was kind of already established in the first Tim Burton film, with his origin told in flashbacks. Granted, the movie seemed to jump in after Bats had only been doing the hero thing for maybe a few weeks to a couple of months, but Waynes alter-ego was still already in place by the time the film starts.

Ambush Bug! wow. nice one.

While I enjoyed Iron Man to an extent, his origin is one of the weakest of all the superheroes. Being saved by a doctor from one of the countries being destroyed by his weapons is a decent start, but the fact that the doctor invents a revolutionary piece of equipment in such a short amount of time while being held prisioner..... in a cave, is bordering on retarded. I have yet to watch Wolverine, so maybe that will trump the awfulness of this.

The doctor didn't invent a revolutionary device to save his life, its an electro-magnet stuck beside his heart hooked up to a car battery (real revolutionary). Stark is the one that creates the mini arc reactor to replace it so he doesn't have to lug around a car battery for the rest of his life. Pay attention to the story instead of all the things going boom.

"its an electro-magnet stuck beside his heart hooked up to a car battery"... oh my bad. these things are so simple to cook up when you are being held prisoner in a poorly lit cave trying to save a dying person's life.... my mistake.... it only makes sense that as a prisoner, he would have all the tools necessary to save Stark. It's not like this procedure doesn't already exist in real life....

Rumor around the campfire - IMDB - is that the new script excised most everything that made GL different than other heroes (the climax with multiple GL's, hero not in suit for climax - having the really on ingenuity instead of powers - had been removed for some more traditional lame good guy bad guy fight) Heres the post:
"The Leaked script which has gotten glowing reviews and was well received by the fan-base has apparently been butchered - most of the sci-fi scenes have been removed, Oa's presence minimized, the Green Lantern Corps are no longer present in the Climax on Earth and Legion is gone.
Or so I've heard, take this with a grain of salt - if you want more info you can try contacting the people at Aintitcool or Chud, or tweet someone involved in the production - the person I heard this from is someone I trust so I haven't done any back-checking.
It should be noted that they really liked the new script, just felt it was a little more generic and far less epic. "

...because an invulnerable, super strong alien baby flying across the universe in a rock while being educated by his dead father is quite believeable.

lulz, guy wants us to contract Chud... hopefully its not true though. I was really digging the script that leaked and as you said the whole thing with Hal being powerless for the climax and having hundreds of Green Lanterns there really set it apart from traditional superhero movie tropes. And I really don't see how they can do this movie without Legion.

Script wasn't perfect but if that thing from imdb is true than fuck this movie, everything I liked abotu the script taken out and replaces with more shitty humor no doubt

I've always had a soft spot for Green Lantern. From Hal Jordan, to Kyle Rayner, back to Hal Jordan. I'll be at this movie opening. Even if it's with a heavy heart.

Its IMDB, I doubt its true - if it is though - haven't read the script myself but the review on LR was really cool sounding and I love the idea of this being a heavy sci-fi adventure with giant monsters (Legion) and an army of super-powered beings (GL Corps working together in the climax sounded awesome) - well if they got rid of all that in exchange for some superhero generics than I guess I'm pretty disappointed... hmmm.

The only good thing about the script was the climax - with the Green Lantern Corps flying around earth fixing shit while Hal Jordon, powerless, had to rely on his own ingenuity and drive to save the day proving why he was the one chosen to have the ring - eveything else was bullshit origin story stuff with lame comedy. If its true that they have changed that fantastic climax into just some lame super-fight that I have no interest in this project.

I think having an origin story for the first movie is usually a good idea. I kind of like to see what makes a dude dress up like a Spiderman or why someone decides to dress up like Superman, even if he can already fly. That IS the story, that is the character. To "get to it" really means you want them shooting lasers at each other in the first 15 minutes.

RCA, you are ignorant - A wire with an electric current passing through it, generates a magnetic field around it, this is a simple electromagnet. Not exactly revolutionary, although, it's probably not something you'd be able to figure out.

"A wire with an electric current passing through it, generates a magnetic field around it, this is a simple electromagnet". you're right, it is soooo simple!!! that's why there are so many of these devices in REALITY... ha ha ha!!!
There ARE a lot of electromagnets, RCA. You're not particularly bright, huh? The magnet in Stark's chest was just used to keep the shrapnel from further piercing his heart, not to keep it beating.
Um..didn't we make electro magnets with a battery and wire in elementary school? lol
I'm almost positive I made one in 2nd grade science class :P
Comment #18 (Posted by RCA)
There are a lot of electromagnets surgically implanted into people's chest's to prevent shrapnel from piercing their heart? good one. I wasn't questioning electromagnets in general(duh), just the fact that the doctor invented this device at a moments notice while being held prisoner in a cave, without which, there would be no Ironman... sorry, but that is pretty retarded.

Confused by comments... will someone with some insight into this film please tell me if this stuff posted in these comments abotu the script are true?

"Green Lantern is a character, unlike Superman, Batman or Spider-Man, who could probably benefit from a detailed origin film". See Green Lantern: First Flight. The character and the universe are set up within 10 minutes.

RCA - I'm not sure why I bother... but, the character WAS an MD and an engineer. And they had him in an engineering lab because they wanted Stark to build them a missile. So, yes, the character had the knowledge (Dr. and engineer) and the resources (engineering lab) to do this.

Yeah, that guy posted it there, and also verbatim in a Avatar talkback in AICN. Not surprised to see it here. Sounds like crap to me.

"Magnets have long been used to navigate objects in the body. The earliest use of magnets was for removing magnetic materials, such as steel shrapnel, from a patient's body."
Will that get that chip off your shoulder? Not only does it make sense in the movie, they do (and have been doing) similar things in real life in the medical field! Crazy!

I forget ... why can't they just pull the shrapnel out? Either in the cave, or later?
