I'M DAZED AND CONFUSED THAT LINKLATER CAN'T GET MOVIES MADE

14 million dollars for a 'spiritual sequel' to Dazed and Confused? How is it possible that Richard Linklater can't raise this money? That's just the case with That's What I'm Talking About, which remains in indie movie limbo as Linklater can't quite secure the funding. He thinks it's pretty commercial, according to an interview with Collider. “I carefully called it a spiritual sequel to Dazed cause it’s not the same characters. If Dazed was my High School, this is my college. It’s about a weekend in college in that time period. It’s funny…I think it’s the funniest thing I ever wrote.”One weird thing in the interview with Collider is that Linklater says the next time he tries to get a project funded he's going to attach actors first before going out to fundraise. It's weird because here's the guy who helped invent indie film and he is just now learning this most basic lesson. I guess Linklater likes to be in total control of his films and having a star involved so early on - and having the star so integral to the movie ever even happening - takes away some of that control.
Someone out there - pony up 14 mil so Linklater can make this movie. You know it's going to be worth seeing.

Did you ever think that the reason that so many people "talk about Avatar instead" is because you keep running stories about Avatar even when there's no real news to report? Either man up and accept that you're writing for an audience more interested in big blockbusters and stop fucking whining about it, or change the focus of the site to just cover the little films you think people should be talking about, and deal with the reduced income. This constant, sneering passive-aggressive needling of your readership is really fucking boring.

I'm not all that much of a gay, but I would blow the person above me if we ever met in real life. And if you're not a dude, all the better!

To address the news item itself - too much mud-slinging going on around here, even if it is funny - it would be great to see this "spiritual sequel". Dazed would be in my top 20 of all time, if only because it's one of the best "friend and a beer" movies ever made.

This movie needs to be made.

Devin, can you seriously knock off the Avatar shit? I read this site and learn about great films many for the first time. I can appreciate most of the industry "scuttle" and Batman Tre gossip. But I read your site and get less and less out of it with every tired Avatar jab. At one point, I had given some thought about blogging about film. But it's clear that once someone get stuck on something, it ruins the site. It happened with AICN and Harry's love for every film and a mention of the film du jour of the season every other paragraph and now it's happened to you. I don't want to turn into someone who acts like a 5 year old over something they don't like. I guess I should probably steer clear of chud.com anymore. It's less and less about cinema and more about the retarded Avatar crack of the day. I've given up on the blog. I'd never want to turn into you, or the snarky redhead.
That's it. How you can ruin a good article on a director I really like with another Avatar crack shows you are slipping. Pull your head out of your ass and grow up.

What's up with the peanut gallery?

Wow. That's some serious sense of humour lacking going on right there.

What's up? What's up is that ever since I was told to check out this site over 3 years ago I have learned so much about film and the world of cinema that for that, I can not thank Devin and the staff of this site enough. At his best, I really feel that Devin is a sharp, intelligent, thoughtful writer that as a reviewer, as a critic, sometimes has no equal. Even when I may not agree with him, 95% of the time I can see a point or at least entertain one. Devin's caught shit before, for instance the whole Dark Knight thing. I actually thought he had some good points there that people were missing. His rants against Fox or Bayformers have been funny to a point. But then...it turns. I get it. He's not into Avatar or the way it's being rolled out. But just...it's too much man. If you wanna call Cameron a shill for basically making a film to push HD Home 3D Theatres, then you're on the mark. But no, from the fucking peanut gallery comes a serious lack of humor over a single film that is getting way too much bashing on here. Devin, me (Chris), you (peanut gallery), are going to do nothing to prevent this film from making cash and the studios to try in at least my part of Pennsylvania to sell 3D and Blu Ray in a fucking depression. Because here, it doesn't amount to a recession, it's a fucking disaster. Once the credit card bills are due from Ho-Ho, no one is gonna be buying 3D en masse. And my grand point is, this is just a film to me. To Cameron, to studio heads, it's a helluva lot more. To Devin, it's another snipe in an item about Linklater. What the fuck? Instead of bitching about Avatar again, write an article about Thirst and how the director's cut is not what we go today. Write an article about Gone with the wind and what a 5 disc version of it means in the scheme of things. Stay current and continue the great run of film reviews. Because of people like Devin I got my fat ass up to Scranton to support and enjoy A Simple Man. That's what makes this site great. But enough about a film that doesn't open for a month. Just, please for the love of Bob Dobbs, grow up and knock it the fuck off.

Hey, Chris. Avatar? It's shitty. Schwing!

Linklater is a unique filmmaker. It really is interesting that he hasn't understood things like getting a star attached will (most likely) get your film made. Thanks for reporting on this. But seriously, what is up with these Avatar fags?

It is sad that Linklater is having trouble raising funds - even when he name checks Dazed and Confused. It's probably the most emotionally honest teen comedy you'll ever - I'd love to see hime apply some of that honesty to college.
Oh, and to the people harping incessantly about CHUD's coverage of Avatar... please fuck off.

It's nothing to do with "Avatar fags" and everything to do with Devin's annual crusade against whatever movie has attracted what he perceives to be the wrong kind of geek interest. He was the same with The Dark Knight. Constant news stories about it, always with some bitter little jab at the end, and the whining defense that he has to write about things he doesn't want to, because his readers are interested in the wrong sort of movies and Chud needs to pander to lowbrow idiots to survive. It's fucking tired, is all. We get it. Devin resents having to write for people he doesn't like. Sucks to be him, I guess. Solution: shut up and put up, or stop writing about fucking Avatar every fucking day.

To get off the Devin bashing for a moment... I woulda thought Linklaeter already understood the "having a star attached" thing - Before Sunrise was about hte time Ethan Hawke was a name actor (i.e. three seconds after Reality Bites), and both Bad News Bears and School of Rock would, I'd assume, be pretty much the definition of star vehicles?

Bring back Mr Beaks, besides from being the best film writer on the internet period, it's clear he was the soul of the site, nothing wrong with Devin he is good for himself. Beaks made everyone (writers) and everything on this site better and classier. As a boss, you bust your ass and make sure you keep talent like that!

So I'm geussing that long rumored project - the napolean bonaparte biopic done as a musical set to the works of Styxx is a no go? For shame Linklater, for shame

Easily one of the most overraetd directors working today. I'm glad he can't get a film going. The long the world has to go without a Linklater film, the better.
