HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO A NEW PLANET OF THE APES?

Last month I brought you word that Fox had a new Planet of the Apes script floating around. Called Genesis: Apes, it's essentially a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth film in the original Apes cycle, which ends with the apes taking over the world from humans. Click here to read all about it.Well, I don't want to take credit for any possible movement on this sucker, but when I wrote that piece, Genesis: Apes was essentially dead. Now Tom Rothman, the chief ruiner at Fox, s chatting this movie up on Fox Movie Channel.
Fox Movie Channel is showing all five original Apes films on repeat this weekend (if nothing else, this bit of news makes this whole article worthwhile. Go watch so that you're up to date on all spoilers when my Apes retrospective runs!), and Rothman is apparently talking about the movies in between them - at least this is what's being reported. I don't get FMC.
ANYWAY. After the original Planet of the Apes, Rothman had this to say (transcribed by loyal board reader Phil, the guy who turned me on to the Planet of the Apes garbage can that now sits next to my desk):
We are very close at Fox on a new Apes script- this one a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting - Earth 2009.
This is pretty exciting to me.This doesn't mean that Fox is fast tracking Genesis: Apes or that the film has been greenlit, but with recent sales of the 40th anniversary Planet of the Apes Blu-Ray set going strong, this could point to hope for inveterate Apes fans like me and Phil.

WHy would anyone be hopeful about this? A remake of a remake. America has become so incestuous with it's own ideas that it just produces deformed, autistic, mutant children cinema for a similar audience

Congratulations unknown user #2... you're only one "Devin is fat" comment away from becoming an actual cliche.

I watched all of these over the summer - had only seen the Tim Burton remake up to that point. Gotta say, the series is really fucking strong throughout. The 3rd one (I believe that's 'Escape') is probably my favorite. Mostly because I'm overly-familiar with the plot and twist in the first one, and the 2nd one is incredibly bizarre - in a good way.
Would love to see a return to good, thought-provoking sci-fi like this - but I'd be surprised if we got that from Fox.

A planet where apes evolved from MAN?!?!?!
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Blame Devin! He's the one who keeps posting all these damned, dirty ape articles!
Okay, I'm done.

Oh Don Piano. And from you of all people. Besides, what is it about FOX doing this thing that gives you any sense of hope?

Joe Uman: I have now greenlit a treatment about deformed, autistic, mutant children. Thanks for the idea! Who says there's no originality in Hollywood? P-shaw!

I'd really prefer to see Planet of the Raccoons. They will take over as soon as we're gone, you know.

I say take some credit Devin. Fox is completely out of touch. They need to know that their are fans out there.

I want Jon Peters's Planet of the Giant Fucking Spiders instead.
Then one studio could buy out another and do a crossover. "Apocalypse: The Apes versus The Giant Fucking Spiders" would then make a nice closing piece where "Genesis" Apes" would be the opening.

(for Colonel Glen Manning) Planet Of The Raccoons And The Possums, because they will join the raccoons in their take over after we're finished.hehehe...And i agree with Jeffmw that we never really saw or knew anything about what happened to the small green insignificant planet that was now dead thanks to Taylor(loved him).
