THE WEEKEND DISCUSSION: THE STAR TREK TRAILER

It won't be officially online until Monday, but this weekend many of you will see the trailer for Star Trek in front of Quantum of Solace. Others will follow this link to see a bootleg copy of it on the internet. So the question is: What do you think?
My two cents, given before seeing the film OR the twenty minutes of footage (which I see on Thursday): Ugh.
It seems that JJ Abrams doesn't quite get Star Trek. In fact, what this reminds me of most of all is a big budget version of Enterprise (or at least the pilot of that show - look, sex in Star Trek! So edgy!). There's one simple thing that Abrams doesn't get that I can almost guarantee from watching these two minutes of footage:
Star Trek was a naval show. These are big, ponderous ships, doing big ponderous moves. One of the best episodes of the original series, Balance of Terror, was basically a submarine story. As a naval vessel, the USS Enterprise was staffed with a crew that worked together as a tight, order-taking unit.
JJ Abrams has recast the whole concept as an Air Force concept. It's all flashy fighter pilots and crazy personalities and misfits who come together as a wacky, possibly hard partying group. I have a feeling we're going to be amazed that this loud, zany group comes together as a cohesive unit, possibly at the last possible second. It's Top Gun in space.
Look, Star Trek has been moribund for decades. As far as I'm concerned nothing past the original crew is even worth watching. But between this trailer, all flash/bang and stupidity (seriously, that opening with young Kirk is functionally retarded and cliche on such a painful level. How do you make a movie with a scene like that?), and the reports of the 20 minutes of footage, I'm feeling more and more like this is a franchise that isn't getting restarted but noisily put down. I really hope I'm wrong, since I'd love to see a return to the fun adventures of the original crew, and I'll be going into the final film with as open a mind as is humanly possible. Maybe my lowered expectations will help.
What do you think? Chime in below.

I dug the trailer, but yes the begining part was corny and showing Kirk get the girls in the trailer was corny. Im looking forward to it though, I think it looks really good.

i don't know, maybe i'm just a victim of low explectations but it seems fun. not fun in a TOS kinda way but fun in a NOT next generation kinda way.
and Top Gun is a poor choice for comparison as it's Navy as well-just a different aspect.

I see where you're coming from -- but I've got no problem with the restyling of a dead franchise. It's not like the series could get any worse. At least this one doesn't look boring, which is possibly the worst criticism I'd lay on any film. I enjoy the original series and some of the films, but this is trying something new and seemingly exciting (for once in the series the camera is moving in more than two dimensions).
Yes, the opening bit with kid-Kirk is god awful. But I can't say that the rest of the trailer shows enough to justify the impression you got from it, Devin, particularly that "Top Gun in space" part. Sure, it the trailer is overstuffed with action, but that's the trailer. I'm not defending it, but I'm not ready to accept (or make) statements about the direction of the movie based on a fairly typical trailer.
Also? Love Pegg's accent. Love Pegg.
I think the trailer needed to tease just a tiny bit more. I saw a whole lot of things that don't really excite me. (Although the special effects look sweet! I swear I saw CGI.). It also looks like they are REALLY trying to have this movie appeal to a younger audience. Like REALLY.
You dare disparage Deep Space 9?
Fuck your face Devin. Fuck your face.
Good to see the old 60s logo. Abrams probably seriously dorked out over that. Too bad someone said "buckle up," though.
Comment #8 (Posted by Matt Goldberg)
I wholeheartedly disagree. I can understand if you're a die-hard fan of the original Trek like Devin, but to someone like me, who can enjoy The Next Generation, DS9, and even Voyager, this is the next step for the franchise. It has to grow up and appealing to the nostalgia (and the old Star Trek really is pretty terrible) isn't going to cut it. I'm excited for this film simply because it looks like Abrams is doing something fresh which, for a stale franchise like Star Trek, is exactly what must be done.
Why the hell should so many people so pretty fucking critical, it looks like fun! stop shitting on things just so you'll feel so superior and smug.
I know we only saw/heard him for a few seconds, but I'm convinced Simon Pegg is doing an impression of Billy Boyd.

Hey! I went and saw Quantum of Solace today and I didn't see this trailer! Is it because I'm Canadian? It's because I'm Canadian, isn't it?
First, the "young Kirk" is kinda lame. As is the "young Spock". But I've got to give it to Abrams that He's not crippled by the "we've got to make it look as if the show was futuristic" mentality. Really most of us have phones that kick the tech in the shows ass. Abrams is just revamping the mythology for a new generation. Will it work? We"ll see. And more Simon Peg as Scotty!!!
Comment #13 (Posted by ohwhattaworld@yahoo.com)
Very appropriate this trailer premiered with "Quantum of Solace." As Ebert mentions in his review for that film, Bond is not an action hero and trying to cram that character into the modern trend of "nitty-gritty, stripped-down action" is boring. And, while it's only a trailer so you shouldn't make up your minds just yet, it seems "Star Trek" (or "Star Trek Babies" as the casting suggests) is headed for the same forumula. Maybe that will prove to be beneficiary to the film, but my guess is that no one is dying to see a gritty, realistic take on warp cores and klingon mating rituals.
Devin, I'd be interested to read a "Devin's Advocate" about this trend and the less-than-pleasant way it seems to be spreading throughout various different franchises (Batman, Bond, Star Trek) to wildly varying effect.

it pains me how uninterested in this movie I am. Snore...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Comment #15 (Posted by Matt OCallaghan)
I thought this looked fantastic.Trek is a faded, limp wristed and dead property. Turning it into a shit hot action oriented sci-fi seems like a good idea to me
We have seen the clunky old naval flavoured version of the show; Im cool with what I saw. Quinto as Spock was a masterstroke, and I hated Heroes.
The trailer gives me the uneasy feeling that this film going to be "The Fast and The Furious" in space. If so, it will suck the big sweaty Klingon sack. Star Trek is about to mutate from completely irrelavant to completely retarded. Targeting viewers with the mentality of junior high students should doom this reboot or whatever the hell it is to one and out status. Daredevil, Gozilla, and The Shadow, I'd like you to meet Star Trek.
Comment #17 (Posted by Letter E)
I went to see Quantum of Solace tonight (enjoyed it, didn't love it)and did not get the trailer. I'm in Houston, so it wasn't just Canadian bias.

I think you should pull the stick out of your ass and go with it. At this point, anything different is better. It looks fun. That's all I need.
Wait, Matt, you're saying that you like the rebooted Star Trek more than the original series? Man, you have no taste if true.
Devin, your opinions and writing are just terrible. Please stop! You are ruining the internet!
Comment #21 (Posted by Sexie Mom)
"look, sex in Star Trek! So edgy!"
What? The original series was the only one that had decent sexiness. From the miniskirts and go-go boots, the bikini wearing aliens, to Kirk fucking everything that was female that breathed...there was some sexiness in the series. A hell of a lot more than in the unitard stiffs in NG.
Comment #22 (Posted by Barak Gobama)
Devin is down on this film because he hasn't gotten a free trip to Europe of of it. Or an ass-kissing set trip. Or even an early screening. Devin can be BOUGHT, people. He is a fraud.
Comment #23 (Posted by joe Uman)
It's Star Trek, not 2001, so who really gives a shit what they do with it now.
Devin's hating on Abrams' trek is just more Abrams hating on his part. He likes to shit on his riff any chance he gets. I laughed my ass off when all the nerds on G4 scolded him for running his mouth during their comic-con coverage.
As for the trailer. I liked what I saw in it, but the trailer itself was poorly put together. Too much frenetic energy put into it.
Comment #25 (Posted by Kobayshi Maru)
Hmmm...It does look like it fits a flashy action "mold". I agree with Devin about the naval/air force feel. But so what? Honestly the franchise needs a good kick in the ass, and some new fans. If this is what it takes, then im along for the ride. Hopefully the trailer is just cheese on a trap.
Love Simon Pegg btw.
.....also you hated NG? you broke my heart a little.
JJ Abrams has never been involved with anything I've liked. I admit to having never seen lost, although I do hear mixed things about it. Mission Impossible 3 is a terrible movie and in my opinion is actually worse than the horrible second one. Maybe this will be good, but I doubt it.
I agree with Devin, everything in that trailer seems forced and doesn't "feel" like Star Trek. That opening with the kid is absolutely horrible as is the acting of said kid. This shouldn't be a "misfits become cohesive unit" story. This should be a story of how some of the brightest are thrown together and discover how well they work as a team.
This just looks like the CW's Star Trek babies.
Where is the sense of wonder?
that trailer looks more exiting than anything i remember seeing from the dour and/or ridiculous earlier versions. like Star trek meets Star wars, which i believe was the directors intention. and Pegg looks great as usual. he must be so happy about that role, if he's half the geek he appears to be.
Comment #29 (Posted by Bobclark, I mean Brad Millette, I mean, ummm....)
Thought it looked great, you fat slob.
Much better than than that cheese-fest of a Watchman that's going to bomb.
Get ready for therapy when it does, fatboy.
Comment #30 (Posted by Casey Moore)
I just can't get excited for this film. Nothing has really made me excited for it. Where is the boldly going where no man has gone before? This has become just a typical action revenge flick. At least Bond is going from its source material rebooting that way; but this looks more like it is taking Starship Troopers as its source.
Comment #31 (Posted by Hi Bobclark!)
Once again, Andre Dellamorte suckles on Devin's swollen teat.
Give it up, you ass-kissing nerd. You're an even worse writer than Devn, if that's possible.

Hey, whiny bitch! It looks fun. That's all that matters. Is being an elitist cry baby a requirement for writing for this site?
Less "Top Gun," more "Hot Shots." Well-scribbled, Devin. You make a lot of salient points, particularly in the Navy vs. Air Force comparison.
This trailer looks interesting even though it will be a loud and crazy version of the original crew. I'm still of the mind that the crew and stories of the New Frontier books would've made an excellent tv show and potentially films once popularity demanded them. Oh well. I can dream.
This is Trek before Trek, so it makes sense to me that they'd be crazy, college kid loose cannons at this point in their careers, before fully understanding what you have to do to operate as a cohesive unit. I think it's the most logical way to go.
But it's not as bad as.......
WHAT DOES GOD NEED WITH A STARSHIP?
....is it? Oh crap the trekkie came out of hiding in me.
For the love of god why do franchises that started in the sixties feel the need to keep going and going and going? You know, maybe if Star Trek hadn't descended into pornos for pyrotechnics junkies in the last decade or so then they wouldn't need to resort to this reboot nonsense. I'm starting to hate this prequel nonsense and by the way FUCK YOU TOO GEORGE LUCAS!

::scrunches up his fat face::"Mehhh, I don't like this, they should have had Seth Rogen in make-up play every single character. I'd rather look at the poster for FUNNY PEOPLE than watch this movie. Where's my stale soda-pop and my bag of moist Doritos?"--Devin.
Comment #38 (Posted by That Guy)
Top Gun was Navy, not Air Force. However, your description of the Air Force was pretty accurate, at least related to my experience.
I don't know, I dig it.
I grew up on classic Trek, saw all the movies, so it' sdear to my heart. Having said that, I think this looks fantastic. Pegg and Quinto are spot on, and Pine seems suitable for young Kirk.
Of course, no one will read this or give a shit what I have to say because I'm not taking swipes at J.J. Abrams or calling Devin a "fat bitch". Seems to be the only "legitimate" kind of criticism on this site.
Comment #40 (Posted by Remembers when Star Trek was the boring Star Wars)
This seems like one of those Star Wars EU stories finally brought to life. Not as good as the original, but decent and filled with fanboy references. Hopefully JJ's pushed it beyond that level, giving this new crew an identity of its own. And Quinto is Spock. Brilliant casting.
This is what you ask for, Devin, when you say it's a good thing to have a Star Trek film that appeals to more than the fans.
Comment #42 (Posted by Savage Henry)
i am a big fan of everything trek. i have seen all the episodes and all the movies and though some were better(some a lot better) than others i enjoyed them all.
this film looks BAD ASS!!!

All I know is the audience I was with cheered when the kid said James Tiberius Kirk and applauded at the end of the trailer. This was one of the coolest previews I've seen in years, and anything that makes Star Trek interesting again will get my $10.
It looks like a pilot for a CW show designed to appeal to teen girls.
"Be sure to watch Melrose Place:In Space! airing after 90210 this fall!"
This looks fantastic and Star Trek was in serious need of an overhaul and I credit Abrhams for at least bringing something re-imagined to the table. As for the opening, it isn't that bad. It's a young and rebellious Kirk as a kid who stole his dad's antique car for a joyride and the action and effects look stellar.
I find it hard to believe that JJ and gang didn’t do their homework. In the TOS episode the menagerie, Kirk indicated that he only met Pike once when Pike became fleet commander. According to what i have heard about the new movie is that it is Pike that convinces Kirk to join Starfleet. This is not consistent with the menagerie. Also in the episode a Piece of the action Kirk didn’t understand how to drive the old earth cars. The new movie depicts a young Kirk driving a Corvette. This to is not consistent. I know, I know the fringe Trek fans will bash me for pointing this out, but they need to understand that its this type of respect for the historical continuity of Trek that makes the show have such a large following. Fans tune in to see how the past matches up with the future. The fans deserve better, easily JJ and gang could have developed a story that didn’t conflict with the proud history of the show, it shows a lack of respect for the fans.
Comment #48 (Posted by an unknown user)
"Fans tune in to see how the past matches up with the future. "
Then fans need a fucking hobby.
Comment #49 (Posted by Nanoo nanoo)
It's not the show I hate - It's the fans.
"Proud history of the show"? It was a fucking cheap TV show from the 60's. The original writers of the show didn't think ahead about continuity so expecting writers 40 years later to slavishly adhere to things that were barely thought out to begin with seems sub-moronic or Devinish.
Comment #50 (Posted by Retlaw Kciuq)
At the risk of scolding, this trailer was actually better than what we got Thursday from the Watchmen trailer. Sorry but I think Devin is playing it down.
"look, sex in Star Trek! So edgy!"
Did you even watch TOS?
The Original Trek was filled with SEX, girls in mini-skirts, stripper music whenever a hot chick enterd the room, Kirk hitting on every thing with a Vagina in site.
TOS was SEX, Roddenberry wanted Kirk to bang three-titted women and nail green aliens.
Putting Sex back into Trek is bringing it back to its roots. You fake ass fan, stop trying to pretend you liked TOS when you cant even remember that it was filled with sexual innuendo, a pimp Kirk, and bright vibrant colors.
Everything you say Trek is came after TOS.
Comment #52 (Posted by Phasers On Stun/ Sulu Chick Magnet)
No Shatner?!! Fuck J.J.! Beam me outta this nerd circle jerk! Props to Roddenberry for boldly going where no man has gone before with Uhura! (Gene's not a player he just crushes a lot)
ugh! This reminds of the disaster called "lost in space!" None of the charm of the TV series (pick one). I don't think I have seen a trailer that has turned me off to wanting to see a movie so much.
I'm glad some people think this looks fun. To me, it looks like another overblown big-budget fast paced piece of junk that is loosely based on a TV series.
I'm sorry, I just can't get past the opening with the kid. That shit is Phantom Menace bad.
Comment #55 (Posted by Sgt. Zim)
Devin, who're you kidding? You hope this movie proved you wrong? I call bullshit. Sounds like you've already written your strongly negative review of the movie, sight unseen. Look, I could give two shits about Star Trek, but I'm actually looking forward to this, if only because JJ is involved. And to all those bitching about the kid Kirk, it could only be Phantom Menace bad if he's in the entire bloody movie. Which he's not, so quit your whining. That could be the first few minutes of the movie for all you know...
Never watched the shows and I can say that the movie looks fun. Go get laid, you fucking slob. You are the only thing bad about this site.
When people say this looks like a fun movie, it's code for this movie sucks, but I like the wicked CGI.
Star Trek: The Original Series was filled with wacky characters, and sex. That's what made it great. Kirk was like James Bond in outer space, he was knee deep in pussy, no matter what species.
That show was also filled with lame dialog, stop making it out to be Shakespeare.
Everything that made Trek great was bled out of the series and we ended up with dry, boring characters in a dry boring universe (Voyage, Enterprise, Insurrection, Nemesis). They tried to treat Trek like it was more than it was - a fun TV show.
Ever watch "The Trouble with Tribbles", "Mirror, Mirror"? - Trek is fun, light and from the looks of this trailer - so is this movie, which thankfully doesn't take itself too seriously.
Comment #59 (Posted by unkown user is such an ass)
Well, sure, there's still Amish that can be seen riding around in archaic buggies drawn by horses....In 350 years wouldn't a gas powered red sports car be so priceless and collectible that no one would drive it. ..? Simon Pegg : I always like but can he deliver on the goofy scottish fake accent? He does look a lot like Spock in profile doesn't he? J.J. Abrams seems like the kind of guy who could talk you through a really good proposal meeting for the suits with the money. No offence, J.J. you are well spoken! AND he seems very popular as far as the products that the sheeple consume, wot with Lost and all...but I haven't enjoyed anything with his mark on it yet. Could this be the thing that changes a guy like me to a fan? All I see is a long line of bad decisions and choices that will end Star Trek in a violent flurry of CG aliens and ray guns that explode everything they touch. Mayhap the script is so personable and charming that we are wrong, who can really tell from a grainy dark blurry bootleg Adobe flash trailer? Pray we are wrong. Really no one will ever be Kirk but Shatner. On Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0WNPb8R-40
Comment #60 (Posted by The Take)
Sooo Devin, a fat and pathetic slob, who is hated by the majority of the people who frequent this site... dislikes Abrams, a highly successful and humble man married to a beautiful women... sounds like Devin is jealous.
"confusing dumb with fun" - right, this movie is no more dumb than TOS, in fact TOS was completely absurd and over-the-top - or "light and fun" for those of us who can enjoy pulpy entertainment (as someone said above it had a lot of 'sex' too...).
This trailer was great - you're fat, and lazy, and clearly not a fan of classic Trek.
Visually it looks exactly like a Michael Bay movie.
As an older Trek fan i have to say I got a lot of Original Series vibes from the trailer.
My favorite part of the original Trek was the sense of adventure, the vibrant atmosphere and overall light feeling to it.
It wasn't until "The Motion Picture" that Trek tried to be more cerebral and I'm glad to see this film isn't doing that again. It looks like we are in for a classic Trek episode- filled with adventure, sex, and great character inter-play, but with a modern edge.
I'm still not sold on the bridge, but at least the atmosphere is right. The only thing that can mess this up is massive continuity errors - I mean Trek never really had great dialog or anything - its not like this is a Godfather prequel.
Comment #63 (Posted by unknown poster is not lame)
The best of Trek always had a good amount of lame - just look at "The Undiscovered Country", Scotty is all "I know this ship like the back of my hand" then BANG he walks right into a support beam.
Maybe its just me but this movie seems like the star trek equivalent of Batman&Robin...lets hope I'm wrong.
Very TOS in my opinion, lets hope the movie delivers.
The only thing that looked Bay-ish was the little-kid Kirk intro.
After that it was like a love-letter to the fans of Superman Returns proportions. Only this time it is a loose prequel rather than loose Sequel
Comment #66 (Posted by SexFiend)
Sex in Trek - have you never seen an episode of he original Star Trek - it was filled with Sex - Kirk is truly the original playaa.
I'm kind of a hard-core trekkie so I was a little nervous about this but, while I'm still not sure how I feel about a reboot (Trek should always be moving forward). At least they have captured that TOS feeling. This appears to be a very 'back-to-basics' approach like Batman Begins or Casino Royale - only where their source material was inherently darker than people remember Treks was always very light and optimistic. This trailer appears to be so as well and yes, it looks very fun.
I have to say that after seeing this trailer, this is the 1st time I have EVER been excited about anything Star Trek and i actually really like some of the films and the original series. I agree that this seems to capture some of the best parts of the original series and the better films. Action, adventure, and fun...sign me up!
This is different! And, in seeing the trailer, It actually made me half interested in seeing what Abrams has done with this property. And believe me, I've seen it all - from the very first run on NBC in the 1960s, through the more politically correct Generations, through Deep Space Nine, Voyager (Ugh!) and Enterprise (final season was at least watchable). I don't really care if its canon or not, At the very least it looks like it could be fun twist on the Star Trek mythos. And the first scene wasn't so bad - after all, Kirk has always had a 'fondness for antiques'.
Comment #70 (Posted by I liked Next Generation the most...)
I was a child of the 90s, so Next Generation is what I grew up on. I would argue to this day that First Contact is the best movie of the series. One thing that I liked about the show was that it really was science fiction in that it delved into interesting concepts and moral dilemma. Space ships alone don't mean science fiction, they mean fantasy (see Star Wars.) All that said, when they broke the rule of even numbered sequels = good, it was clearly time for some reflection. Enterprise was certainly not the way to go, and while this seems much more action-fantasy than science-ficiton, I can deal with that. As others have said, it does look like a lot of fun. And perhaps because TOS was always a curious relic to me, I can deal with it being done over. I'm sure they might have had a new, original crew if it could have still sold tickets, which is entirely what this trailer is trying to accomplish. The opening bit with mini-Kirk was not made with us nerds going "Oh noes!", it was meant to catch normal movie-goers off guard that this was a Star Trek preview, and thus give it a chance. At my screening, it worked like a charm.
I think if looked decent. Seems to have alot more in your face action that I am used to in Star Trek.
I think some people put the original Star Trek on too high of a pedestal (Kirk and Spock were great but Kirk banging half the alien chicks they met was a little campy). It was VERY original for its time and the cast was excellent but TNG and DS9 had much better writing and overall plots, as well as some great characters of their own. The characters were also much better developed and realistic than the original Star Trek.
Is continuity too much to fucking ask for, though? I realize some smart-ass is going to bring up, "Well, Chekov never met Khan in the TOS", to which I would say, "Yeah, but it's less of an error than say forgetting that Kirk was on the Farragut before the Enterprise, and that the TOS crew got together because they were fucking assigned!" I was not alive in 1979, but I have seen the trailer for that film, where each beloved is reintroduced. It is elegant, no Jake Lloyd-type shit, and less emphasis on the blowing ship up part. And Spock just wailing on Kirk is pretty ridiculous. I realize this is just a trailer, but still, why does this look like "Varsity Blues" at Starfleet? Fuck. At least "Top Gun" had the Righteous Brothers. I like JJ Abrams, I liked "Cloverfield", I liked "MI3" and compulsively watch whenever its own, but fuck, why take a huge shit on a legacy to make it seem more fucking hip? At least we have Simon Pegg, but still....
Wow, what can I say to people who can bash a movie before they even see it. For all the people that like to say that the only good Star Trek was the original series, well look at the numbers. It was cancelled after 3 seasons. Hell Enterprise lasted longer and we all know how the majority of people feel about that show. Give the new movie a chance and keep an open mind. Everyone hated and bashed Casino Royale before it opened and its one of the best Bond movies ever. Star Trek is headed for a silent death unless someone takes a chance and reimagines the show. I give JJ kudos for taking a risk.
Devin is clearly NOT a Trek fan, at least not a TOS fan as he claims. That show was filled with 'wacky vcharacters', the characters often argued, and yea it did have a lot of Sex - new female characters were introduced via stripper music and spent entire episodes being hit-on by kirk.
All the aspects Devin seems to think TOS was were not seen until the movies, and Roddenberry hated the military aspect brought in with TWK.
Been reading some comments and I agree it looks like a loose prequel to TOS, not sure how that is going to work out as the whole 'loose sequel' thing didn't pan out so much for SR.
And to "I liked Next Generation the most..." - you should check out some TOS episodes its way more fun that these chumps make it out to be. If you think this trailer looks good you probably would really like TOS.
Let's see Kirk seems to be cocky (and no doubt womanizing), Bones is amusingly downbeat, Scotty enthusiastic and excitable, the only strange thing is Spocks anger but as anyone who read the four scene description that is a major plot point. As is Kirk trying to get him to snap.
Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis, Voyager and Enterprise were all complete trash. Trek was fucking dead. Not anymore! This looks like classic TOS - bringing back everything that made that show great from the sex to the comic feel. Long live Trek.
It looks like it may be a bit ridiculous, but I'm still excited about it.
After suffering through those low budget pieces of shit known as the Next generation movies, this is a welcome return of the characters I love... though they may not be in their original form(it looks as if they've been stuck in the Seth Brundle machine with the young attractive cast of any number of late 90s WB series)... it will still be good to see them again.

After re-watching a few episodes of the Original Series I can safely say that JJ gets Trek. Far more than Devin does. Devin seems more a fan of the movies than the TV series. Ill start with the sex comment - In TOS you had Kirk banging any nearby hottie, Spock had a couple of SEX storylines and the hot-babe-of-the-week definitely had lots of SEXy parts of hers being displayed. Also as others have said TOS is not some untouchable masterpiece it was a campy tv show with crazy aliens, wacky plots and phaser battles. This trailer is PURE TOS.

I mean seriously... does no one believe in the idea of "let sleeping dogs lay" Jesus! I mean yeah Star Trek is a dying franchise ( and I am a big fan of ST) but going back to the old Trek does not breathe life into the fucking franchise. For one, they are fucking up the story line, yeah they can say it's an alternate story line all that want, I know the truth, you know the truth and Raptor Jesus knows the truth.
Secondly WHY THE FUCK DID THEY CAST SYLAR AS SPOCK!!! AND WHY THE FUCK IS LEONARD NEMOY IN THIS FUCKING MOVIE!!!!!!! I mean the only character that I am looking forward to seeing is Simon Pegg as Scotty, other than that I see dread in this movie; Carl Urban as Bones ftl.
Thirdly what the fuck did they do to the Enterprise???? It looks like an electric razor mixed with one of Howard Hughes' wet dreams. The interior is just as awful it looks like they blended BSG, ST and SW to get one shitfuckcuntass mix of an aesthetic nightmare.
Fourthly, the god-damned-mother-fucking-piece-of-shit-ass-spelunking plot. Someone goes back in time to kill Kirk. What the fuck shit brick. Are we really that lame as writers now? We have to degenerate into the realm of bad fan fiction? What about what happened to the TNG crew after Nemesis? How about we explore the mysterious Enterprise J? What about the Enterprises F-I? I mean my God Jim, Gene Roddenberry would roll in his grave. Star Trek has usually been a comment on Society (WoK&Nemesis WMDs, FC and Generations on aging, Undiscovered Country on making peace with old enemies ala US and USSR and so forth) what the fuck is this a comment on? I mean there has been so much shit going on since Nemesis that would be a perfect story to tell and they opt for shitty as Fanboy wet dreams. I am angry and disappointed.

They got the look and feel of the Original Series perfect. After those two recrent posters I was worried they would try and turn Trek into some 'Dark Knight" like thing and make it all serious and depressing - two things Original Trek is not. Batman's source material is the complete opposite of Treks.
The threats are real - yes. But the show was always bright, optimistic and never took itself seriously. It should be filled with humor and energy.
My main concern is that of the Characters motivations, and I think they may have completely screwed the pooch on that aspect of the movie.
Alas taking all the elements that made TOS work and pumping them up for a 2009 audience wont work if the characters main reason for being is gone.
Well, its just Kirk that looks like he has been altered. If you saw the horrible remake of 'The Time Machine' a few years ago, you'll know what I mean. The time traveler from the original HG Wells novel was a man motivated only by the quest for knowledge and exploration.
In the modern remake, the storytellers decided that that motivation wasn't apparently valid or at least easy enough for viewers to relate to, so they tack on a scene at the beginning of the movie where the traveler's beloved fiance is killed, driving him to create the time machine in an attempt to go back in time to save her.
Apparently the the human need to explore and discover that was present in both Trek and The Time Machine are no longer considered valid human qualities by the cabal of Hollywood screenwriters, and only something as basic and trite as 'The Power of Love' or something can help mankind achieve anything.
Star Trek was about self-improvement and pushing forward for the sake of its own reward. Now we have a kirk with a dead dad and some generic reasons for joining Star fleet - "MY DADDY DIED ON A SHIP LIKE THIS!!!"
Oh well maybe I'm wrong. Oh and if Kirk talks to Old Spock and knows it Spock - the ending to TWK is fucking =ruined, its that simple. Like AVP and AVPR ruined the treat in Alien/Aliens.

"Gene Roddenberry would roll in his grave" oh would he now? These quotes from the man himself suggest otherwise: on TMP - "We also had talked about maybe doing the story about how all the Enterprise crew came together years ago. But we are all seven years older and that might become such a huge make up problem that it makes it impossible" - and from the 1997 book “The Art of Star Trek” by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens: "Roddenberry drew enthusiastic applause when he told a rapt audience his plans for filming a prequel to the series telling the story of how Kirk and his crew had met at Starfleet Academy.", and one last one about the redesign of the ship for TMP from Gene "Of course doing a motion picture and particularly doing it on a wide screen where you see everything in so much detail…even if we had the old bridge we would have to redo it to make it more sophisticated and better.”

This is the one and only time I've ever been excited for anything Star Trek, which could explain alot. I found that opening bit with kid Kird hillarious and I can't wait to see what other kinds of ridiculous JJ's got up his sleeve. I can't wait.
Uh, Kid-Kirk crashes a car getting away from some alien dude in that leaked one. I'm not seeing what's SO hilarious. Am I the only one who gets a distinct Lost in Space remake vibe from the trailer?
Comment #91 (Posted by Devinsdoppleganger)
I totally agree that the young Kirk is just plain awful. I hate young... anyone. It reminds me of Phantom Menace as the other poster said. I have hope that this won't be the final nail in Star Treks coffin. Can't be any worse than Nemesis though.
Insurrection was worse than Nemesis as was all of Voyager and Enterprise. Kid Kirk is annoying but cant take up much of the movie. TPM had kid Anakin the entire fucking time. I just hope this doesn't fuck up continuity as much as the Star Wars prequels did - it was as if Lucas was creating plot holes and discrepancies on purpose. Kirk meeting older Spock already sounds like a major canonical violation (TWK anyone)
Original trek was magic. And Next Generation was good too. This movie could do without the kid, but otherwise i'll give it a go.
Trailer was amazing! J.J. Abrams is pulling a Ronald D. Moore on Trek... a reimagining of the series.. .and I love it all!
Does this remind anyone of the terribel remake of Lost in Space??
1 word... DOOMED
The scene with the kid jumping out of the car and declaring that he's James Tiberius Kirk looks terrible, but the rest of the trailer is impressive.
Nimoy's Spock better give a fake name or something or it kind of fucking ruins 'The Wrath of Khan'
If you think nothing past the original crew is even worth watching than you really don't get Star Trek either.
Comment #99 (Posted by Gender Bender the Offender)
Well, what did you expect from a marketing department leech who has absolutely no creativity in him, but who convinced scores of cretins that he does? From someone responsible for "Cloverfield" and the horrifying "Antisuperman V" non-script?
In fact, from someone who actually calls himself "J. J."?
I was in fact expecting something even worse than this (i.e. more or less this trailer, but with an added dose of shake cam and nu-metal)

Star Trek is anything you'd like it to be.
I love the franchise and the possibilities. Star Trek has always shot off in different directions, and I don't mind that. The basic premise is still the same I think. I would rather the franchise get kicked in the balls hard than fade away into the night.
Color me intrigued but concerned. Forget the sex, forget the effects, forget the "boldly going"... what really made Star Trek special was always its INTELLECTUALISM. If that's not maintained, it won't be Star Trek. If it is, then there's still hope.

Bryan Singer should direct the next Trek film
Comment #103 (Posted by an unknown user)
ToS is supposed to be a bit corny, and people who think the movie should be as intellectual as TNG should go watch some ToS episodes. My only complaint is the first scene. It makes it look like a kids movie.

i think Devin has managed to put together the single most childish, unhelpful, biased and pathetic article i have had the displeasure of reading, chud has just found a new low by allowing this article to be posted.
So they have decided to ignore the TV series in terms of canon, hopefully they will at least treat the first four films with respect.
Comment #106 (Posted by an unknown user)
Did Michael bay direct that trailer? Cause it looks like it. And that means its crap. It looks like JJ said, what do fans wanna see? And some asshat said, Space Battles and Quippy One Liners.
Also, apparently in the future the highways are patrolled by the Combine from Half-Life.

so you're seeing the footage today, I'm guessing you've already written the review prior to seeing it so why not just post it now.

People are being hyper critical about all of this. I can understand being a little apprehensive. They need to make sure they don't over compensate special effects for lack of good story and dialogue; but we wont know until we see the whole movie. I think the trailer rocks.
