DICAPRIO WON'T BATTLE CLOWNS IN NEO-TOKYO

When Leonardo DiCaprio's shingle Appian Way started to work on a live-action adaptation of Akira with Warner Brothers, the assumption was that the actor/producer would be featured onscreen in some capacity. But Leo tells MTV that he's not into acting in the film, only producing. "No, not really," was his response in regards to interest in taking a role either in Akira or Ninja Scroll, the other anime adaptation Appian Way has going. Drafts of Gary Whitta's script have been floating around, but DiCaprio says they're still working on it. "We’re waiting for the final draft of the script ...I know there a lot of loyal fans out there of the project and die-hard fans, so we’re going to try to do the best job we possibly can and we’re not going to make the movie until the script is in the right shape."
Without a final script in place we're not likely to get much casting news, though I love the idea of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo. (Even if he has scuttled the rumor for the time being.) I'm a lot more curious about this remake than most other current re-imaginings. As a kid I was mesmerized by Akira's animation, and twenty years later I still see the art as a high point in the medium. But the story doesn't come off very well in the original film. Even with Katsuhiro Otomo condensing and revising the tale, which was not yet finished in print form when the film was made, the thing feels plodding and over-complicated.
If Appian Way really plans to make two films, each adapting three of the six manga volumes, I could easily see the problem persisting. But what if Whitta (or someone else) really cracks it? A big, live-action version could be magnificent. I'm not hinging any huge hopes for the future of mainstream cinematic sci-fi on this project, but I'd love to see it succeed.

Leonardo DiCaprio isn't Japanese. I don't know what that means either. Neo-Tokyo is about to explode! I had mixed feelings about this adaptation, but now, I am starting to get hopeful about this one. Time will tell. Unless it doesn't.

I love AKIRA and while I don't think a live action movies are necessary I still find the idea cool. I definitely agree on Joseph Gorden Levitt he would be so perfect. Now I remember hearing they wanted part one out in summer of '09, but can they still make that, it seems impossible.

They should be teens, at least, and preferably asian, the actors. If they nail the script, this could be the one scifi to better Bladerunner.

This is not a good idea. Never has been. This will be as good as that 'Fist of the North Star' adaptation in the 90's. And by good I mean total shit. If they were going to adapt a manga/anime with Western actors, why not use a story that FEATURES western characters? I'd rather see a live-action 'Red Garden' myself ('Gossip Girls' meets 'Twilight', it can't miss!)

I absolutely LOVED Akira as a teenager, but recently had the unfortunate experience of viewing it with adult eyes... While the design and animation are still incredible, the story is unfocused and awkward, and the characters unlikeable, especially, the irritating, immature Kaneda.

I just hope someone has convinced Leo that NYC is way over exposed in American films. Personally, I would rather that they use the entire S.F. Bay Area. At least it wouldn't be NYC or LA. Couldn't you imagine the protest march across the current or future Bay Bridge when it's destroyed at the hands of Tetsuo!? Just think of the emotional impact.

Akira is already scifi of the highest order already. There is no need for an empty headed tween based remake. At all.

I have seen Akira twice.... and fallen asleep both times. Granted, I started watching, both times, at the end of a night of drinking and smoking, but yeah, I've never seen the end. Always thought it was a cool movie, but Mary Jane (I love you) was always cooler....

AKIRA is kind of a uniquely japanese story, what with the Akira cults and post-atom bomb vibe going on... but I guess that stuff can be cut out...?

Akira is a Japanese story, but not uniquely so. The basic story here -- sci-fi shit leading to post-apocalypse -- is familiar to Americans. And there aren't really Akira cults in the comic, at least not until Neo-Tokyo blows up again.
It doesn't make any sense to adapt the anime, but if the manga is done well, it could be pretty fucking cool.

The Biker Kids are Reform School Delinquents - so they're not specifically anything uniquely "Asian". The Psionic Kids are Post-WW2 experiments, so again, that could happen anywhere and there's enough US Conspiracy Culture/Lore to support the idea in a film. JGL is a good idea for the Testuo-derived character - if they aim for similar "young looking but not actually a teen" actors to fill out the cast then maybe Lucas Black as the Kaneda character. (great great score would be Bruce Willis for the Colonel.) But they should keep the biker kids edgy - they're MEANT to be fuckheads except for Kay. Good kids wouldn't get caught up in the shit they need to to get the story rolling. Kaneda in particular has to be overbearing and arrogant to spark off Tetsuo's insecurities and resentments.
