STRACZYNSKI'S SUBCONSCIOUS BRINGS FORBIDDEN PLANET DETAILS TO LIFE

The notion that J. Michael Straczynski is scripting a re-do of the sci-fi classic Forbidden Planet didn't go over so well. Not many films are truly inviolate, but that seems to be one of the few, according to what I heard from a lot of people. Proud of you all -- the film was always a huge touchstone for me, but for some reason I didn't think it was held high in popular esteem.
Beaks and Harry over at AICN now have some new details of the potential project. Namely, that it would be a slightly reimagined sequel rather than a remake. Harry's source says that it's 'less of a remake and more of a continuation'. Harry ruminates on what that could mean, but I'm more intrigued by the other detail, that it would be an "enormous, giant, retro sci-fi movie"; in other words, they're going to implement the design of the original rather than attempt something modern.
Given that they're also told that Robbie the Robot will be in the film, I love the idea that it could be a fully retro sci-fi epic. How often have similar attempts worked in the past? Rarely. But it's the sort of thing I'll always hold out hope for. Let's see who gets attached to direct, assuming the film happens at all...

I hope Leslie Neilson is back as the love interest. I haven't seen him make love since Naked Gun 3...

The only other retro sci-fi romp I can remember was Sky Captain, and that didn't get respect at the box office.

A retro sci fi flick in this day and age? Unless its an indie or dtv shit, I think not! Expect this version of this remake to go nowhere.

OOoooh...fer fux sake!
leave the classics alone already!!!
$hit, cheesy 80's movies that were only kool coz they were honestly $hit but fun - remade!
60's / 70's TV shows...remembered by most so...remade as a film.
Classic films. They were good, people rated them/they did something fresh...remade!!!
aaaAAAAAARGH!!!
leave em alone already!
Give a writer a break and have their book scripted! Make a classic book a film...there's plenty of them!
but for the love of Heyzeus Kristos...
STOP WITH THE REMAKES!!!
(Ok, so this one is a Return to..so what, it'll still be $hit!!!!)

I suspect by retro they mean in terms of what JJ Abrams is doing to incorporate Trek's original designs. That'd be the fashion now, I guess.

The obvious flaw in this approach is that Forbidden Planet is only retro because it was made over 50 years ago. At the time it was incredibly futuristic and forward-thinking, so to make a sequel/remake/whatever that clings to the past is to completely miss the point.

I could swear that I heard Harlan Ellison pitch the exact same idea on Tom Snyder's show about a decade ago. In general, I think a continuation/sequel is better than remaking an already classic.

Guys...the aintitcool report isn't true. JMS posted to a newsgroup saying that it's NOT retro, and it's NOT a continuation. Looks like Harry talked to the wrong people.

Does that mean that it's a remake or a prequel. Ahh the HMS Bellerophon expedition. Now it makes sense.
Hank: so Kahn are you Chinese or Japanese?
Kahn: No, I'm Laotian!
Hank: So is that like Chinese or Japanese?
