CHRISTOPHER NOLAN EMERGES FROM THE BATCAVE

Christopher Nolan has spoken on the issue of his return for Batman 3. And his answer is: maybe. The LA Times has caught up with the director, who recently returned to Los Angeles after time away counting his money. They promise a three part interview and the first part is up now (and includes a stunningly annoying little exchange that essentially laughs at people who want to find subtext or meaning in a motion picture), and they get right to the goods. Nolan's thoughts on coming back for a third movie:
Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer.
He also says that he has no idea what the story for the next film would be, claiming he and his brother and David Goyer weren't setting anything up for a sequel. I don't know why anyone doubts this - a look at The Dark Knight shows a movie so crammed with stuff because these guys weren't willing to save anything (like, for instance, the Waynetech employee who tries to blackmail the boss. Or a satisfying conclusion to Two Face) for the sequel.

He can take his time thinking up an idea. I wouldn't want to be part of some idiot fanboys who would put stress on the guy by demanding a 3rd film immeaditly.

Pretty much all of those except Goldfinger: NO. I don't care if they break for 5 years as long as the film is good. But Warners is going to be biting hard at the chomp for a third Batfest.

I think a revised Catwoman may be interesting...instead of literal ears on the hood they could be technilogical devices like a high sensitive listening device on one side and a top down disruption field / cloaking device on the other side of her head. Her m.o. would be financial chaos.

Sad world we live in where movies like Transformers get the fanboys going while Last Crusade is a "NO!" and Die Hard with a Vengeance is just "eh, it's alright." Get some taste, people.
As for Batman 3, people need to stop going down the list of villains and saying, "Well, we've already done the Joker, Two-Face, Ra's, and the Scarecrow. I guess we should do the Riddler, the Penguin, or Catwoman next." The villain(s) should be whoever fits the story, not who's next on the popularity list. Nolan isn't out to perform masturbatory fanservice. You assholes have Transformers 2 coming up for that.

Where did this trend come from where people hate Last Crusade? I mean, seriously. Cry baby fucking fanboys. Last Crusade is a fun movie, and mops the floor with Temple of Doom. And Die Hard With Vengeance is fantastic. Get over yourselves. Please.

Last Crusade is the weakest of the Indiana Jones films, saved only by Connery. The only action sequence worth a damn in the movie is the Tank scene, as everything else falls flat. Take this from someone who saw them all in the theater on their opening weekend.
Try to lift the veil of childhood nostalgia when watching these films and be objective.

Alright, who the hell came up with the fake poster?

Alien 3 extended cut is awesome, and the direction the thir bat film should go, as in smaller more intiment,
Revenge of the sith was the best of the prequles, not saying much but it still was good.
Bourne ultimatium was the best of the bournes.
Rocky iii was the next logical step and was a fun quick movie.
The good the bad the ugly was the best of the dollars trilogy.

Last Crusade is better of Temple of Doom. Temple of Doom is a schizophrenic mess - darker yes but with added Short Round and Willy, surely the biggest wastes of celluloid i the series pre-KOTC. Especially Willy Scott. Oh and Sankara Stones are a dry unheard of MacGuffin, the Holy Grail now that's a MacGuffin - one we've heard of in real life but have no idea of what it actually does. Oh and when is Devin going to stop sniping about the Dark Knight? To quote Connery, let it go. PS. Die Hard with a Vengeance is one of the greatest action films of the 90's second to only Die Hard 1 in the series. That film is endlessly quotable. Plus the elevator shootout is tight.

"Try to lift the veil of childhood nostalgia when watching these films and be objective."
Right, because it's so much better to view them as a bitter middle aged douchebag.

So he's just making this up as he goes along?

Army of Darkness better than Evil Dead 2??? No, no, no, seriously how can you even think that? AoD was fun, but Evil Dead 2 is absolutely fucking fantastic from the get go, mixes the slapstick and gore and horror perfectly, rather than just being a goofy fun film.

SAModernist, your m.o. must be ludicrous ideas that ruin sequels.
ahh, just actually read the quote rather than skimming it, so yes, AoD is a good third movie and most of those (except Police Academy) are. But then what do I know, I think Alien 3 is a decent movie.

Don't screw up the story next time, Nolan. DK is the best Batfilm ever, but the mistakes are glaring, in between the brilliance. The fight-scenes are lousy, boring, pedestrian. The waste of TwoFace terrible. The end, over-dramatic and pointless. Hope you have the time and freedom to write better next time. And get an expert in to help you with the action choreography.

Why does everybody forget Back to the Future III? Arguably the best of the series.
Comment #20 (Posted by Burt Reynolds)
SAModernist, that is the dumbest fucking idea for anything I've ever heard. Kill yourself.

Thank you unknown user. I fucking love BTTF 3. I think NOES 3 is definitely the best sequel in the nightmare series. Seriously, though, I hate the title Gotham City and I hate that poster. It looks like shit.

Coming out of TDK for the first time, I immediately thought that it would be neat to see a third film based around a line I read in the comics about "what it means to be a cop in Gotham City: it's to forever be in the shadow of the Bat."

Wow, what a bunch of losers who can't enjoy Last Crusade. transcendentgnat - you fool. you telling me the scene where batman first comes out with that music and the steadicam moves with him isn't amazing. You are a fool.

In a perfect world, there wouldn't be a sequel. As a Batman nerd, I found DK to be as close to a perfect batman film as I'm going to get. Word of a third film in the works is going to make me cringe with the idea of it being something akin to spiderman 3, where its okay, but not great, or in some people's opinion, downright terrible. I know a sequel is inevitable though. The guys at WB are going to run out of 100 dollar bills to use as rolling papers soon...

Here's hoping they bust out Bane for the third one. I always liked that Bane's origins were quite similar to those of Bruce, except his shitty surroundings turned him into an evil psycho (as opposed to the more humanitarian psycho Bruce became). Plus, he'd be a nice fit for the gritty, realistic tone Nolan seems to be striving for.

Why does one Indiana Jones movie have to "wipe the floor" with another? They can't both be good? Seriously, why do you fucking nerdlingers have to take such extreme sides in discussions like this? You're no better than rock geeks that think a band either "sucks" or is "awesome." You make me CRAZY. GOD, I wish I was back in High School so I could pants one of you in the hallway.

Having read most all of the comic iterations and Batman being my favorite comic book character I'd say that I don't have a need to see one of the established villians in a potential 3rd film. I don't want to see Batman fending off vague middle eastern terrorists, but if enough care was taken to develop a unique villian and thoughtfully exploring Bruce's inner struggles I'd be good. I also like the above reference to being a cop in the shadow of Batman, I always enjoyed the Montoya character. Maybe they could get the maid chick from My Name is Earl or the sidekick cop in Life to play her. Oooo, and get Tom Cruise to play Robin. Joking on both counts.

Due to the gobs of money TDK made, there's no way Warner Bros. isn't making a third (technically seventh) Batman movie. It would almost be akin to ignoring their fiduciary duty to Time Warner shareholders if another Bat film wasn't made (them's the breaks when movie studios are a part of a publicly owned corporation). But I wouldn't be surprised at all if Nolan bows out, except for retaining a producer credit and drawing a nice fat fee.

Am I the only person in the world who loved Batman Begins and hated TDK? I could never sit through that movie again (which is my first test).
Comment #30 (Posted by Random McAhole)
"technically the seventh"? fucking weak. you're leaving out Batman 1966. While you're at bringing up movies involving Batman that don't involve this series, don't forget Mask of the Phantasm, or the serials from the 40's. Way to use you're counting skills.

If Nolan wants to really see what it takes to make an artistic, epic third film, he need look no further than Jonathan Mostow's opus "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines". Hopefully he pulls a Marstow and does it for the art, and not just for the likely huge pay day.
