Ben Stiller is in early talks to direct The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Deep breaths. Deep breaths.
Okay, this is a project that I am excited about in the same way that Twilight fans are excited about Clay Aiken coming to town. This is a movie that I've been dying to see ever since I first learned about the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention riots. If I had ever gotten into filmmaking, it would have been to make this movie.
And now Ben Stiller is in line to direct it.
Well, let's look at it this way: Ben Stiller the director is doing well. Zoolander is a classic, and Tropic Thunder was great. That last film also showed that he can handle bigger productions. Now, neither of these show that he can do a serious movie (unless it's about a smack abusing ALF writer), but I bet there's a good dose of comedy running through Aaron Sorkin's script (which is based on the occasionally funny documentary Chicago 10). There's a lot that's funny about the trial of the Chicago 8, along with the outrage.
And it's really important to separate the Ben Stiller who collects paychecks on garbage like Night at the Museum from the guy who directs movies. And on top of that, as a professional loudmouth on the internet, I should be using my pulpit to congratulate the guy for trying to expand his range.
It's not ideal news (that would have been Paul Greengrass, who already told me he wasn't able to do the film), but it's not the worst news ever. And maybe it's the beginning of a new stage in Ben Stiller's career, one where I don't have to look at my DVD of The Ben Stiller Show with a vague sense of shame.

I made this point on the subject of Steve Martin. Ben Stiller probably doesn't think he's just collecting paychecks. Probably likes Night at the Museum. He has millions already. How can you put all the necessary effort into a movie you aren't excited about making? Sure the money is enticing. But I'm skeptical. Maybe I just need a wad of dough waved in front of me to paint the picture for me.

Well, the guy did begin his career with a movie about a generation of slackers and ne'er-do-wells dealing with that shift every generation goes through. This is a big difference from Reality Bites, but I don't think it's too far out of his capabilities to do. It's still young people in over their heads, unaware of how the choices they're making at the moment could make or break their lives.

Why don't we cut the guy some slack and reserve judgement til a film is made. Stiller has proven that he thoroughly knows what he's doing in the directors chair (and the editing room) and don't forget he turned in some pretty fine dramatic performances in Permanent Midnight and Your Friends and Neighbors. If Ben Affleck can direct a good movie I don't think it's impossible that Ben Stiller could too.

You never know. Who would have guessed that Rowdy Yates or Dr. Doug Ross would turn out to be so brilliant behind the camera?

Zoolander is a classic now? It has some amusing moments, but let's not get out of hand here.

Thats a really good point about Ben Affleck. I never saw him coming as a director.

I think Zoolander is a classic. If it's on, no matter what scene, I'm compelled to watch.

Stiller, at one point, was trying to adapt George Saunders's short story "CivilWarLand in Bad Decline" for the screen. The man's rivers run deep.

...cable guy you halfwits, if he can take a fraction of what he learned watching steven make empire of the sun, and apply it to this, it will be spectacular...

I really liked the chicago 10 documentary - i foundparts of it funny and some parts sickening, like when the african-american chap was physically gagged and tied to a chair in court. My only worry is Stiller will make that into some schtick and confuse audiences as to what's zany humour and what was a serious human rights violation.
Oh and roy schnieder as the judge was fucking amazing.

Stiller has done Zero Effect, Your Friends & Neighbors, and Permanent Midnight, so he's not a total stranger to oddball and serio-comic films.
