ELIZABETH BANKS PONDERS BETTY BRANT'S FUTURE

As Sony starts gearing up for Spider-Man 4 and 5, the attention of the online community turns towards who might be in it. Which means that at every junket featuring a previous star of the series a question will be asked: 'Will you be coming back?'For Elizabeth Banks that seems like a particularly good question. And it's one that she can't answer. "I'm the last person they call," she said at today's Zack & Miri Make a Porno junket. I couldn't help but wonder - is it even worth it for her? By the third Spider-Man film, Banks was a legitimate movie star, and yet she was still relegated to a gussied up walk on role. Banks herself isn't quite certain if coming back makes sense.
"If it's that small, I probably won't do it. They don't need Betty Brant. It's purely, at this point - and I don't think they see it this way - it's kind of a favor at this point."
Which is ironic, considering how she got started in the franchise:
"The story of Spider-Man is that I auditioned to play Mary Jane Watson and Laura Ziskin said 'She's too old.' It's fine. I'm a lot older than Kirsten Dunst, so I get it. I'm not much older than Toby, but... But I got it back then. And I was a nobody. I had no expectations of even being in that movie. The casting director called and said, 'As a consolation prize essentially do you want to be Betty Brant?' So it started out as a consolation prize and it's become a favor."
It seems insane to me that Sam Raimi let an actress who is so beautiful and so funny go to waste. And it isn't like Betty Brant doesn't have history in the early Spider-Man comics - she was once Peter's love interest,
*People who bitch about the soapy elements of the Spider-Man films have obviously never read a single issue of the comic.

Mary Jane is away on a modeling gig in Paris, because she needs some time off after Peter smacked her around. Betty steps in as leading lady. Add Lizard. Make 120 pages long. Serve warm.

The last paragraph of this article is all the proof needed to label devin as a nerd.

Nope, sorry Devin. Betty Brant's brother Bennett was a criminal, but he wasn't the Molten Man. That was Liz Allan's brother.

Fuck it, they should go all Chris Nolan realist and do the Sin Eater arc. Nothing to do with Betyt Brant but meh.. or start a t'internet rumour and say they are going to digitally resurect Lee Marvin to play Tombstone..

the difference between the comics and the movie soapy elements included is that the comics and spidey himself are hilarious.

or
"People who complain about something in the film sucking should be quiet, because the same thing sucked way earlier in the comics."
Not everybody with a complaint that differs from your opinion is bitching. It's this angry nerd attitude (the one you claim to hate in others) that keeps CHUD from greatness.

I would like to see someone actually do a serious, less cartoonish, take on spider-man. Something between daredevil and X-men. Why did those movies especially x-men find the right balance between humor and serious drama, yet Raimi's movies were all sorts of hit or miss and macy gray? Spider-man Begins please...

Banky's a baaabe. Even a blind squirrel and/or a Sir Bottom McFats finds an acorn once in a while -- not using her was a crime. Now tear through some pies, Dev.

The fact that she's in a Kevin Smith movie starring Seth Rogen doesn't suddenly elevate her to some inarguable level of talent. For years, I'd see her in things and only vaguely remember having seen her before, she's so bland. One day, follwiing an IMDB search, I was finally able to refer to her as "that one girlfriend of J.D's from Scrubs." And, as with everything Scrubs-related, that only further cemented her mediocrity in my mind.

I always thought that Betty should have been the "other woman" in Spider-Man 3, seeing as how they completely wasted the opportunity they had with Gwen Stacy. I mean, they drag Gwen into the mix, and then she ends up being a glorified extra. Her and Peter never end up in any sort of relationship, she's never seems threatened, and she doesn't die. What's the point? By using Betty in the same role, they would have finally given her something to do, rather than just waste Elizabeth Banks, who at that point was still a more recognizable actress than Bryce Dallas Howard anyway. Let the woman earn her paycheck! Instead, Betty STILL doesn't have anything to do, and there's absolutely no point in bringing back Gwen, even if Kirsten Dunst ends up not coming back for 4.

The reason other comic book series' can find the perfect middle w/ humor and drama and such is because RAIMI IS NOT RIGHT FOR SPIDERMAN. I really wish they would just find someone else. I'm not that big on the cast, but you can keep them as long as Raimi's out. Banks is a fox, btw. It would be cool to see more of her in this role.

I think its funny that everyone whines about how bad Raimi is for Spider-man when after the first one came out everyone said "OMG RAIMI IS A GENIUS!!" Now which is it...

Raimi screwed Spider-Man! Search your feelings. You know it to be true!

Raimi wasn't wrong for Spider-Man.. Just wrong to keep going after the second film if he wasn't happy with what the studio wanted him to shoot.

After watching all three films multiple like everybody else. I can honestly say she's the only attractive women in the cast. Besides that I like her and her chemistry with pete (sm3). She should come back and have a little more to do. I'm sure many folks are tired of the smallville kristin kreuk damsle in distress thing mary jane keeps going through.

Agreed with Comment #10, by PlanBFromOuterSpace. That would have been great. But then Spider-Man 3 had a lot of problems in the script department. Even though I liked the movie, I will admit that.

Raimi was great in the first one but I feel that Hollywood is always going to screw up these projects because they dont have a real interest in the material and they try to appeal to an wide audience that either never read the story or really dont care about the original material. I personally would have preferred a slower timeline to tell the story and cast a different Mary Jane, there is alot they could have done different, but hindsight is always 20-20. Rememeber telling a story using film is a huge difference from doing it through print.

Raimi is an idiot - especially because of the first movie.
Anything positive about the first Spiderman movie was erased by the shocking decision to use a PowerRangers-style costume with rigid face-covering over Wilem Dafoe's already sinister face.
For the act of hiding Dafoe's facial expressions alone, Raimi is proven 100% incompetent. QED
