IRON MAN 2 RECASTING IS A MYSTERY TO TERRENCE HOWARD

Marvel has been on such a roll lately that it's easy to look at the studio in a very positive light. And, indeed, when news recently broke that Don Cheadle would take over Terrence Howard's role as Jim Rhodes in Iron Man 2, the spin didn't point to a change of heart on the part of Marvel of director Jon Favreau, but indicated Howard was at fault for requesting an exorbitant pay raise.
That's not what Howard says. Speaking to NPR's Scott Simon for Weekend Edition, Howard expresses some disappointment. When Simon brings up the recasting, Howard sighs, "Yeah, I found that out, too." Granted, most of Terrence Howard's statements sound like sighs.
Simon: Really? They didn't...they didn't...
Howard: It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. [The contract] just...up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up.
That's a sad thing. And sure, this could be spin, too, but Howard sounds like he means it. (Maybe he's acting!) The whole interview, available here, is informative and great; the Iron Man 2 comments start at 4:31.
Thanks to Abbot & Prospero for the tip.

...Wow, I mean unless its katie holmes, recasting should be avoided at all costs...now we hear they didnt even come to him about this and decided to switch actors, which I hate (unless its katie holmes). This sucks more then before because it seems like they could have gone with Howard.

I don't know...considering that Favs was all over having War Machine in the first one...and considering the weak link in the cast was Paltrow...and considering that Cheadle HAS to be more expensive than Howard...this all smacks of damage control on Howard's part.

You really think that ugly bitch Maggie was an upgrade? I dislike Holmes as much as the next motherfucker, but Gyllenhal is just so fucking atrocious to look at. Her face looks as if it were constructed out of melted birthday cake.

I really think Marvel should fire itself for giving us such a forgettable iron man movie instead.

Iron Man wasn't that exciting, but I'd go see another Tony Stark movie. Like 'Entourage,' but with cooler toys.

Paltrow wasn't the weak link. There wasn't a weak link.

I am much happier with Don cheadle rather than Terrence Howard.

I bet it has less to do with money and more to do with Howard's notoriously diva-like behavior.

This is interesting. I'm looking forward to the real poop on why all this went down. It's hard to be upset about Cheadle, but the switch is weird.

i like howard but he was terrible Iron Man. It didn't help that his character was more like a footnote than anything esle. I liked Iron Man, but i'd really wish someone would come along and make the first great comic book movie.

well koolbrick i assume you haven't seen the dark knight?
because that, my friend, was a great comic book movie.

Nothing is still confirmed. All this is just reminding me of Sony supposedly replacing Maguire for Gyllenhaal in Spiderman 2 which obviously didn't happen. I hope this is part of the hardball negotiations because I don't want Cheadle!

I have to believe things like Katie-Holmes-hate are passed from nerd to nerd across the Internet like a venereal disease. I understand people thinking she's not a great actress because I don't think she is either. But the amount of hatred consistently spewed her way in comments sections for articles that have nothing to do with her is hilarious. It's too much of a coincidence that everyone hates her(not just dislikes her but despises her apparently). It all seems too lemming like. Dunst hasn't been in anything high profile lately, so I suppose Katie had it coming. I thought Paltrow was great, by the way.

I'd love to hear what Favreau has to say about all this. He's probably like "Wtf's going on here?!" I think this sounds more like Fox didn't want to be associated with him so they didn't even bother trying to sign him.

This is really too bad, because I was hoping they'd stay away from recasting and also go with someone who looked more like the Rhodes character. There's no doubt that Cheadle is talented... he's just somewhat of a smaller guy.

the worst scene in iron man is where terrence howard looks at the suit and says "Next time". I was expecting the mother fucker to turn to the camera, wink, and mouth "For the sequel". Fuck, what an awful scene....

Agreed, that whole "Next time" scene was intended to butter up the fans with a cheap "foretaste of things to come" nod. The whole movie was ridden with that kind of fan-service that did little to ground it into a believable universe, IMHO. I know hardcore comics fans were eager to see Marvel fly on its own but the hype for that particular movie was really out of proportion. I found it really silly and inept, forgettable fluff all along. But that's just, like, my opinion, man.
As for Katie Holmes/Maggie Gyllenhaal bashing, I thought the obligatory low blow to Batman was a staple every time someone posted an article about Iron Man? Like, totally random rivalry stuff?
Howard was hardly in the movie, so at least he wasn't annoying like Paltrow or hamming it up like Downey or Bridges. I'm not a big fan of Howard's "light in the loafers" style, and had a hard time picturing him as a soldier - much less an armored one - but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Now, I think Cheadle is a far better actor but I can't picture him in that suit either; smells like stunt casting just to add another big, respectable name to a project that lacks respectability. Besides, given Favreau's and Theroux's resume I wonder which Cheadle we'll get: the serious Hotel Rwanda/Crash thespian that gives some cred to the flick, or the Family Man/Ocean's buffoon that tries to fit with the comedic tone? My bet on the latter.

Saying there has yet to be a single great comic book film after this decade has spoiled us geeks rotten is to be mighty thankless.
Specifically towards Iron Man, I dug the hell out of it. It was fast-paced, light-hearted without being goofy, and put characters above action. Being my first movie in theaters for five months, and having been in an isolated region where I got to miss the surely endless over-hype no doubt played a role in my pleasure. (But not entirely, I saw Indy 4 the same day and it still stank.)
I just wish that after that sabbatical I was still leaving movie websites well enough alone. We spoil these films for ourselves so.

Marvel is being dumb again just like when they were with the director of the iron man movie. I want terrence howard back

I find Cheadle one of the most watchable actors (was great in Boogie nights), however I feel he would a bit wasted in an Iron Man movie. Maybee he'll have great chemistry with RDJ or something- any-hoo; he definately won't suck in the film, he is quality.
I enjoyed Iron Man but was not blown away by it (liked it less on a second viewing) - there's one thing that realy bugs me about the movie though; the cheesy low rent rock music which plays in the background when iron man is flying; it totaly cheapens the movie and reminds me of an HBO show or something. Also, why didn't they use the 'Sabbath tune in the actual movie?;it was bad-ass in the trailer (much less bad ass over the credits:-(

Cheadle is awesome. One of my favorite actors. Howard is awesome. One of my favorite actors. That said, they are best suited to different types of characters. If you need a scientist character, Cheadle fits because he exudes a more cerebral quality. If you need a military character, Howard fits because he exudes a more physical, alpha quality. That's why I feel like Howard is still the better choice. Plus, I dislike seeing actors replaced in a movie franchise.

I think they should get the dude playing the dude whose another dude from Tropic thunder to play War Machine - that would be awesome

Cheadle/Howard they both look the same. I just hope Katie Holmes get to take over the part from Apple's Mom.

Agree this sounds like damage control on Howard's part. Anyway Cheadle is an upgrade.
