HELP DEFEND WATCHMEN

After watching the twenty five minutes of Watchmen footage in Hollywood a week back, I told Zack Snyder that I would be sneaking into a test screening of his film at my earliest opportunity. Six months is too long to wait, I told him. He said that he had already told Warner Bros to expect lots of fans to sneak into screenings. 'Don't worry,' Warner Bros replied. 'We have ways of dealing with the fans.' Zack smiled and said that he knew Warner Bros was underestimating just how hardcore this fanbase was.Now is the time to prove it. Collider has received word that Watchmen is testing tomorrow in Portland, Oregon at the Regal Lloyd Center 10 at 7pm. There will be guys with clipboard and paper tickets around the theater and general environs asking people if they want to see a free movie early. They will not tell you what movie they're recruiting for. They may tell you it's from the director of 300, they may tell you it's a comic book movie, they may just play it really vague. They're looking for a virginal crowd - ie, people who are not fans of the comic, and maybe not even comic fans in general - so if you show up, pretend that you're just Joe Sixpack and that you thought Sarah Palin was winking at you in the debates.
The problem with this info getting out is that there's enough time for the test screening to get moved or canceled. I kind of wish Frosty had sat on this until tomorrow, but the info is out there, so I wanted to share it with all the PDX readers.
By the way, Zack didn't seem concerned about fans sneaking into test screenings. If anything, he seemed to welcome it. Anything that will help him get his two hour forty five minute cut through the studio.
If you do get in, drop me a line. I'd love to hear your reaction.

Dev, it's okay, relax. People are going to see your virginal geek-fetish comic book movie in droves. It's alright, calm down, breathe in and out. Fuck, you're starting to cough. Didn't the doctor warn you against swallowing Zack Snyder's VISIONARY cum? Also, isn't the term 'visionary' kind of redundant for a movie director? Aren't ALL film directors visionaries? I never heard of a blind director, have you? Also, this isn't exactly an original vision. Snyder has done about three remakes , a remake of a movie, and two more remakes of comic books. And from what I read, he's going to do more VISIONARY EPIC MASTERWORKS on a few more comic books. I know you love orignal ideas and movies, but you are not exactly supporting them anymore are you?

Dick Cheese. Wow. You really seem to have an understanding of filmmaking. I enjoy your views and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Do people liking things bother you that much? Cause you know what like? Liking things. Have fun in your awesome I'm so indie club of one. Although I imagine you also hate hipsters so that's not good.
Libertarian? And let me guess, computers?

"Anything that will help him get his two hour forty five minute cut through the studio. " But Devin...didn't you also say: "While we're talking about long summer blockbusters, one of the posters at Wells' blog mentions something that I've also heard rumored: The Dark Knight is looking to be damn long. The poster, Mr. Gittes, says he's heard three hours; I've been told 'over two and a half hours.' Maybe we'll split the difference and call it 2:45. My source tells me that while the film is still in editing (ie, anything can change in the next month or so), Christopher Nolan seems incapable - or maybe unwilling - to cut the movie closer to 120 minutes. Of course we live in the age of the bladder bursting blockbuster, so he'll probably get away with it. But damn if all of this doesn't remind me of the excess of the 60s, right before Hollywood collapsed under the weight of shitty, pompous epics and shitty, tedious musicals." Can we sat hypocrite? I sure can.

Dickcheese and Frogger, you two bastions of wit and insight should have your own comedy routine, I mean, I'm in stiches here!

Is this what you really wanted? Get rid of these talkbacks. There are enough places online to spew misplaced hate.

I always have thought Devins Championing of Watchmens running time while damning Dark Knights was a tad hypocritical. Though, I'm sure Devin will make fun of us for remembering something he said, which is his go to for when someone points out a hypocrit move.

I do have to point out that forty years later, people are still watching a great many of those "shitty, pompous epics and shitty, tedious musicals." There were more than a few that were actually great movies. It's not the running time, it's how you tell the story and whether or not your film entertains people. THE SOUND OF MUSIC = three hours of bliss. MEET JOE BLACK = 3 hours of piss.

But there are never enough places to spew fanboy cum. The Message boards are just not enough!! Please, tell us all how you would like the site to be run. It is here for you, and only you....

The REALLY funny thing about this , is that, whether you like it or not, fanboys, we've all seen that Devin nailed it on TDK's running time...your holly grail IS too long for it's own good, and there is no one piece of source material to back up TDK's running time, where with Watchmen, it would be near impossible to make a coherent (or good) film with that material in a 2 hour time frame.

I would love to see this movie early, it looks like it has a lot of potential. If I hear it's around Atlanta, I'll go for sure.

Test screenings are a lot like torture and polls, in that they both stand a good chance of producing inaccurate or untrue answers, which often tends to be just what those asking the questions are looking for.

Fuck all this! Where the tits!?!?

There's simply no way this film should be made. Period. There's no defending it. This film will be an abomination.

Hey devin, can you do another Devin's advocate as to why you are a geek and not a nerd? Pretty please with sugar on top.

Meet Joe Black was 3 hours? Holy shit. I've only ever seen the trailer and the youtubed "double-hitter" - doesn't seem like there's enough plot for 3 hours. Must've been back when chicks would pay good money to stare at Pitt for hours at a time - like Leo in Titanic. I thought TDK got a bit rushed at the end - looking forward to the extended DVD edition. Will catch Watchmen first day - but I'm not bothering with production diaries etc. Keep the comments sections - there's only like 12 people in the forums and they're utterly boring.

In Dean's defense (kinda), TDK and Watchmen are 2 different cases. TDK was (for a comic movie) supposed to be largely a original story/film. We know that they weren't trying to do a verbatim take of a specific storyline and didn't need to work within any confines of format and content. So the question was, could they construct a story that would hold up that long? <p> With Watchmen on the other hand, you have a specifically plotted out story that is so large in scale, the challenge is to squeeze as much of an epically scaled story as one can into a limited screen time.

Wouldn't letting the hardcore geeks in be the easiest way to get a 'virginal' crowd?

Man, guess I'm still one of the only people in the world who LOVED Meet Joe Black...

Hey dick cheese, do understand that an adaptation and a remake are two different things. Was Stanley Kubrick a hack because he ADAPTED works of fiction? You have the IQ of George W. Bush: 10.

thanks for the heads up. I was there last night. Watchmen is the shit.
