RIDLEY SCOTT COMES BACK TO SCIFI

In new sure to get science fiction fans very psyched, Ridley Scott is looking to return to science fiction for the first time since 1997's GI Jane, and he's planning on doing it in a big way, by adapting a scifi war novel called The Forever War. The book, written by Joe Haldeman (no relation to HR, as far as I can tell), is about a galactic war between humans and a race called the Taurens. Besides focusing on your usual bleeding heart sissy war is bad themes*, the book also deals with the concept of time dilation in interstellar travel. To wit: the war spans 700 years, but for characters who are jetting from one end of the galaxy to the other to fight it, only 7 has passed. That's an awesome concept, and one that isn't explored much in science fiction films. Plus I bet it makes a killer metaphor for the soldier returning home to a country he no longer recognizes and that no longer recognizes him.
Scott's been interested in adapting the book for a while, apparently. "I first pursued ‘Forever War’ 25 years ago, and the book has only grown more timely and relevant since," he says. "It’s a science-fiction epic, a bit of ‘The Odyssey’ by way of ‘Blade Runner,’ built upon a brilliant, disorienting premise."
Of course the 71 year old director may need some time dilation of his own to see this ambitious production come to fruition. He still has Nottingham on his schedule, and after that he has a backlog of projects that could be next. Having become very intrigued by the premise of the book, I'm hoping that he clears the deck and makes this one next.
*Haldeman served in Vietnam.

Time Dilation has been explored thousands of times in sci-fi literature. It's nearly been done to death. Not sure where you got the idea that it hasn't been explored.

So they are fighting the horde from World Of Warcraft why just the Taurens?

Your right Andrew. Only problem is, Devin didn't say anything about literature, he said sci-fi films.

Yes, he needs to finish Duplicity 2: Fingercuffing Maid Marian before he can move on to Spade Runner: The Forever Bore.

Wait a minute. I thought "Brave New World" was supposed to mark his return to sci-fi? Either way, this is great news.

"Ridley Scott is looking to return to science fiction for the first time since 1997's GI Jane"...ha ha..thats hilarious...i bet ridley ends up producing this instead of directing it under his scott free banner, but id rather he directed it...wonder how they are going to handle the plot point in that the government, to control overpopulation, encourages homosexuality! Only in sci fi literature...

I've read Forever War many times, and Devin just comes off like a tool trying to discuss it.

Demi moore had nice knockers in GI jane. The movie would have been a tad more realistic if all the Seals tag teamed her asshole at the end of the mission. Science fiction indeed.

Not sure if I can buy an interstellar war that requires such long travel times - does the book give good grounding? What could be so threatening that you'd invest 350 years waiting for your troops to arrive on the front line (Human Political instability not withstanding)? And another 350 to hear if they'd been successful or not. And surely by the time they'd gotten there Earth technology, fueled by war lust, would have advanced to wormhole travel and the "dilated" soldiers would arrive in the equivalent of the tourist attraction Vietnam has become with the war a distant memory. Or, a few months after leaving on their 7 year trip, the slower troop transport would be intercepted by newer faster transports. Anyway, Scott just namedrops some SF property every time one of his Oscar attempts falls on it's arse or he doesn't have another cut of Bladerunner or Alien to release.

That's right Scottsman, because the guy certainly doesn't have a film resume that could challenge any of his peers over the last 30 years.
