CARAMEL MACHIATTO WITH A TRIPLE ADD SHOT FOR SHERLOCK

Is this from Sherlock Holmes or Chaplin: The Lost Years? Am I too wedded to the deerstalker cap and pipe? Should I come to just be happy with the bowler and venti coffee?JustJared has snagged the first shots of Robert Downey Jr in his crime fighting clothes as Sherlock Holmes, and I just don't know what to feel about them. They certainly go against the general vision of Holmes as a proper and well-together British gentlemen, but that image is probably pretty wrong. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle envisioned Holmes as 'Bohemian' and quite disorganized, leaving Watson to clean up after him.
So it's a look that's going to be jarring... and yet it's probably more true to the source material than what we've seen in the past.
Or maybe he's doing undercover work and he'll have the deerhunter cap later. Who knows.

he look like a homeless clown who couldn't afford the makeup or had it licked off by another clown while sleeping in an alley

This isn't the kind of picture we can base opinions on. We don't know the context and it's clear RDJ is on a break. Let me see actual character shots from what we WILL see on film and not some JustJared (??) snaps of RDJ on set trying to relax with a cup of joe. You guys above me already griping, how do you know that costume is actually completed right now and not loosened for the poor guy's break? How do you know he's not trying to blend into a scene where he needs to look like that? How do you know it's not a shot of how Holmes dressed before he gets into the mystery solving business? How do you know anything from that really? I say reserve opinions for something more official, or at least, in character

I'm very sure that this is one of his disguises. It looks very similar to the disguise he wore in "Scandel in Bohemia" and he was wearing it the first time he saw Irene Adler. With Adler being in the film, I think this is a distinct possibility.

Holmes does do a lot of undercover work with costumes in the stories so it could easily be that.

Holmes is wearing a disguise. He often went undercover in the Doyle stories.

Doyle's stories never once mention him wearing a deerstalker. One of the illustrators interpreted an "ear-flapped traveling hat" as such and the image stuck. Once it was used on-screen, that was how everyone saw Holmes. The fantastic Jeremy Brett TV version had him wearing a top hat when out in public, which is more likely given the era.
