A little while back I raised some hackles when I said that physical storage media was dead and that it was all about digital downloads. Every time I turn around I feel more and more like I was correct. Today's sign that streaming/downloading is the future: Richard Linklater's brilliant Slacker is available on Hulu for free. In its entirety.
Yeah, I won the Criterion of this movie. And when I upgrade to HD, I'll buy an HD version of it. And when I upgrade to whatever's next, I'll invest again. The movie's that good. But now the movie has entered a new place, one where lots and lots of people who would never otherwise experience it will have a chance to see it. Is it the ideal presentation? Duh, of course not. But 90% of the time you don't need the ideal presentation. If you grew up watching movies on VHS and shitty prints shown on late night TV, you'll understand that concept.
Anyway, Slacker - for free and streaming online. It's pretty cool.

The re-release of Godfather and Blade Runner in the last year have been so terrible and nobody has bought them. I know that when i have friends come over, i beckon them to my 19 inch computer monitor instead of my 52 inch flat panel tv because inserting a disc in my blu ray player is too difficult. The young whippersnappers nowadays dont even remember what dvd's are or how to use them. Everytime i go to best buy, i see rows and rows of cards for digital downloads...okay, im done now

That's just great if you live in the Great Satan, what about the rest of the world (you know, the ones you owe money to).

I love my shitty recorded VHS tapes of Angel Heart and Twelve Monkeys. ...mmhh...yeah ...whatever.
Fellow non Satan citizen, you can get yourself a hotspot shield or whatever they call these things with which your ip-address is blocked/substituted with another one.

Of course you are correct about death of physical storage... could you see it going any other way? I bet you'd "call" the loop on a rollercoaster.
I am a big fan of your writing on the site, not one of those Devin-haters, but the first line of this article reminds me of Al Gore inventing the internet.

It's hard to see this being a viable way to see movies when ISPs are capping bandwidth. A couple of (free, legal) movies per month, like this and Slacker Uprising, and suddenly Comcast and the others will be on your ass for hogging their internets.

Hey, Unknown User Comment #1 guy, I'm curious- does it hurt to be such an asshole, or does it come easily?

Is there a reason that everytime I see an embed link to Hulu it tells me the video is not currenty available?

Finally I can watch Lawrence of Arabia on a 3 inch screen with some "ear buds." The way David Lean intended it to be seen.

That last comment was great. Especially when I first heard Jon Stewart say it on the Oscars. Apparently Mr. Ballsack can only repeat humorous things that other people say and hope that no one remembers the source. But isn't that what online journalism is all about?

Johnny, if you live outside the United States, that's why. Hulu only has a North American license.

You guys do know that a PC can be hooked up to any HDTV, right? That you don't have to use your monitor to watch streamed movies? I mean, you're not stupid, you must know that. Right?
