THE HOBBIT IS STILL TWO MOVIES, BUT IT'S REALLY ONE MOVIE

"The reality is that we stopped talking the first movie and second movie, and we just started taking about the movie - the two episodes, or two parts, as if they were a single piece of narrative," the director told MTV. "We don’t even call it the bridge movie, we just call it ‘The Movie.’ And this is great. When we found what reverberated, and we found it in one of our virtual meetings - we understood. It’s a movie."
That leads to a lot of questions, notably: will the first film encompass The Hobbit in its entirety, or will that (realtively self-contained) story be split among the two films? Del Toro says "I think Smaug dies in the first movie," which leads to the conclusion that the first film will indeed take on the meat of the novel. Of the second, he says, the most solid point right now is that it will lead right into the Peter Jackson film trilogy. Hopefully that means a last scene with Gandalf heading across the state line to pick up a bunch of fireworks and booze.

I guess they have to make more than a single film to absorb the costs better, but it still seems weird, like an elaborate joke about the last film's extended ending, this one just keeps going into another film.

You guys see my clever name? That's clever, right? Right..?
Anyway, does anyone else hope they leave Bjorn out of the movie? That russian animorph never really meshed with the rest of the universe, in my opinion. Giant eagles and goblins are one thing, transforming bear dudes are a whole other can of worms.

What I'd like to know if whether Gandalf and Thorin are going to talk of the Necromancer, thereby confusing morons, or will del Toro chicken out and make Sauron a character in the movie(s)?

Just as long as there's plenty more walking in nice scenery and lots more oh-so-seriously-po-faced dialogue.

Another spin: We couldnt come up with a cohesive single story for the second movie, so we'll spread the hobbit out over two films and just interject our other stuff throughout.
I really want to see a single Hobbit film. It's not a sprawling epic, it's a short kid's book - make it a single tight adventure film, not a lumbering sprawl...
Then if you want to make a four-hour "Tales of Middle-Earth" then go ahead

Smaug dies?! Thumping Dumbledores! I'd guess that the BOT5A is going to conclude the second film. Someone, please kill me.

I am more and more worried about this two/one movie concept for "The Hobbit" film after re-reading it. In a fundamental way it is *radically* different from LOTR from tone to plot. It is not an epic. It is a very self-contained story with no preponderance of weighty events taking place that could affect all mankind, like LOTR.
The two movie idea would actually have been *better* if they were going to approach them differently. And I suppose this could still sorta work if the second part is also approached as more of a fun action film. But I really, really really wish, having reread "The Hobbit", that the makers would be satisfied with doing a single excellent film.

Hrm. Smaug dies in the first film, that still leaves the Battle of Five Armies which could be rather large and epic. Maybe that is where they are planning on wedging in Strider. Hey, might as well throw in Kong while they're at it. Suits me fine. I trust Mr. Jackson and Del Toro. Far more than Lucas and Spielberg anyway...
