28 MONTHS SOONER

I'm pretty jealous of anyone who is in Sitges right now; the Sitges Festival is one of Earth's pre-eminent genre fests, and I've heard nothing but wonderful things about it. And sometimes you don't only get buzz on next year's genre films, sometimes you get news. Arrow is in Sitges right now, and he's picked up word that a director has been chosen for 28 Months Later, the second sequel to 28 Days Later, which would - judging by the ending of 28 Weeks Later - take the running rage zombie infection global. Or at least Continental. The director in question is Paul Andrew Williams, the guy behind an Andy Serkis-starring horror flick called The Cottage. I haven't seen that one but have heard good things, especially about the gore. I also heard that it's a comedy; humor is something that has been sorely missing from this series so far.
You'll remember that I was no fan of 28 Weeks Later. I felt that it betrayed the intelligence and character-based greatness of the original, a film that was a crossover movie and not just one for the gorehounds. The sequel felt like a shitty horror film and was filled with implausibility and dumbness; the scope of a second sequel indicates to me that we're in for more of the same, but at least this time I'll be ready for it.

One redeeming quailty in 28 Weeks Later: Imogen Poots brings out my inner Dave Davis.

The Cottage is actually quite crappy, though it does revel in its own gore. That said his previous effort, London to Brighton, is a fantastic little film, I'm loathe to call it a thriller, but it is highly suspenseful.

I agree, 28 weeks later was extremely braindead and it really pissed me off. I couldn't care less about another one.

Well considering the 28 Weeks Later was awesome, and Slither was ok at best(It's predecesor Night of the Creeps, which I just watched On Demand for the first time in years... Just awful. I don't care if the characters are named after famous directors, that movie blows.).... I am definitely looking forward to this one. Just wish Boyle was directing, as he said he wanted to direct the next one.

Sorely missing? I never felt the need for a good chuckle during the 28 movies. Their dour, post-rock-scored misery was what made them good. Let other series do the horror comedy bit.

Dumb, inplausable & shitty? I thought this article was about the about the third '28' movie, not the fourth Romero zombie flick....

implausibility and dumbness? its a zombie film, what did you expect? a Jane Austen adaptation? I think 28WL was okay, and the first one is waaay overrated... BTW, what the fuck has Paris, Je't aime to do with all this?

People on here are actually saying anything good about 28 Weeks Later? It was like they went out of their way to slam as many plotholes into the running time as possible. Utter garbage.

23 Weeks Later was better than the original. And Sunshine was better than both of them.

my favorite part of paris, je't aime is when they cast alexander payne (yes, the director) as oscar wilde...fucking fantastic....what was this article just about?

28 Weeks was pretty awsome, it could have used less shaky cam (and more cowbell) but it was still damn good. Days was better but Boyle was just on with that one.

Im surprised Devin actually disliked 28WL, with its anti-american overtones and all. Im sure if there was some subplot that justified child molestation it would have been in his top 10.

As you have mentioned Sitges, I live there and thought you would like to know that last night (or should I say at 1.00am) this morning in the Retiro Cinema we saw Trick 'r Treat with Michael Dougherty in attendance who gave a little speech beforehand and mentioned "we are only a few of the chosen who will get to see this in a cinema". Shame, as the movie was great fun, stylishly shot, good soundtrack and the four stories perfectly woven together into a good singular narrative. I don't really like anthology movies, but I have to say I did walk out of the cinema at 3am this morning with a smile on my face as did everyone esle I could see......

28 Weeks Later is worth watching for the opening sequence. But once Robert Carlyle makes it up river it's pretty much a shitfest until the closing credits.

Fangoria.com just confrimed that P.A. Williams is NOT doing this movie, so you can all ignore this column. (28 Weeks Later was a great sequel, by the way.
