BILL MURRAY WAXES (VAGUELY) ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT GHOSTBUSTERS 3

If you've been following Devin's various updates from the Fantastic Fest that took over Austin, TX for the past week, you know that it is a fantastic way to get close to a whole range of films and, in some cases, the people who make them. I'm jealous as hell and would love to be down there next year, though with everything else I want to do each September, I don't know how it'll happen. The closing film, City of Ember, ran last night with Bill Murray in attendance. During the Q&A that followed the Ghostbusters 3 question came up, and Quint was surprised by Murray's stance on the project. Here's his paraphrase of Murray's answer:
"…he thinks enough time has passed and that "the wounds from GHOSTBUSTERS 2 are healed" and that he would definitely be into doing another GHOSTBUSTERS movie, stating that the first 40 minutes of the original film is some of the best stuff he's been associated with and the whole shoot was an amazing amount of fun.
He also went on to say that his enthusiasm for Ghostbusters was heightened after recording the voice of Peter Venkman for the video game over the summer. In fact, he said he found himself walking down the street singing the Ghostbusters theme song…"
Does that mean that Ghostbusters 3 is happening? No. Does it mean that if it does happen Dr. Peter Venkman will make an appearance? No. Is it a fun thing to get slightly hopeful for on a pretty dire looking Friday afternoon? Damn right.

It should be done only if he will include himself.

Maybe if any one of the original ghostbusters won't sign on they could work it into the story that that character got killed by a ghost, leading to the group to breaking up. Maybe the remaining ghostbusters could tutor a new group.

"stating that the first 40 minutes of the original film is some of the best stuff he's been associated with".....holy shit that sounds like it came more from a fan boy's (quint) mouth than someone who has been associated with films like lost in translation, rushmore, broken flowers, etc, etc....bill murray probably said something along the lines of "Yeah ghostbusters was fun, but so was the nap i took today. I'll probably only do the latter in the near future".

Bill's Ex must of cleaned him out in the divorce. Women get vindictive when you punch em in the face. Funny that. And now the GB3 dumpster truck of money arrived on Bill's doorstep and so it goes..

Maybe Venkman should die and be a ghost in 3. In general, another sequel at this point seems so boring. Younger comedians taking over? Sounds lame, like what a studio does in desperation to keep a franchise alive. Why would the original players want to make that a starting point? Just seems to me the dynamic that made the characters work in the original are gone. Reitman called it at heart a story about guys starting a business. What would it be now?

If Murray is open to the concept then a sequel could well gain enough traction to make it happen. After all, the decades-too-late sequel seems to be Hollywood's latest hard-on. If it does happen, I'd put cash money on the new cast members being drawn from the Apatow repertory, especially Seth Rogen. Ramis is already tight with them, and Rogen has made no secret of his love for the original. A third go-round might not be terrible if the new Ghostbusters are Rogen, Rudd and Segel.

If Murray won't do it, just get Jim Belushi.

It would be nice to see a Ghostbusters movie good enough to wash away memories of the rancid part 2. An enthusiastic Murray would be a great first step.

Rancid memories of Ghostbusters 2? I'm hearing a lot of that in regards to this story, and I want someonr to tewll me was exactly is SO rancid about GB2. It's an inferior sequel sure, but it's a damned enjoyable one and doesn't disgrace the original in any way. Unlike say Men in Black 2.

Not to do your job for you, but you left out the part about writers from THE OFFICE being hired to pen a script. It would seem to be much more likely than you make it seem here. Also since this is on YouTube why not post the actual interview, which was hilarious?

Maybe it can be about them starting a new business by venturing into the adult industry, using Slimer to bottle ectoplasmic sex lubricants.

Heeeey Bill - you're SO sarcastic/cool! Lighten up, do the movie and get paid. If there's a decent script, you won't get embarrassed - and by the way, you NEED to do a comedy.
