I don't know why I would have to explain to you guys the excitement behind the newest rerelease of The Godfather Trilogy, but since I like giving you film nerd boners, here are the details and specs on that boxset... five copies of which we're giving away:HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (June 30, 2007) – More than three decades after they won the Academy Award® for Best Picture, director Francis Ford Coppola’s classic films The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II will once again be enjoyed by audiences as they originally were meant to be seen, thanks to a meticulous restoration by Paramount Pictures, overseen by Coppola himself. On September 23, 2008, both fully restored films will debut on DVD and Blu-ray, along with a newly remastered version of The Godfather Part III, to be included as part of The Godfather, The Coppola Restoration Collection. All three films will be available individually or in a five-DVD collection or four-disc Blu-ray collection, which are loaded with a host of all-new special features.
The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II underwent extensive frame-by-frame examination and restoration utilizing state-of-the-art digital technology in this historic preservation effort, which required more than a year to complete. Robert A. Harris of the Film Preserve supervised the restoration under the direction of Coppola and cinematographer, Gordon Willis. Harris’ restoration credits include Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Vertigo and Rear Window among others.
The new special features created by Kim Aubry, founder of Zoetrope Aubry Productions, explores the complexities of the restoration process and provides new insights and perspectives about how the film almost didn’t come to pass as we know it. “The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn’t” relates the unlikely events, intrigue, allegiances and luck that put together the unknown director with the “unwanted” cast and contains interviews with most of the living players and many of the films’ admirers. Other featurettes include “…when the shooting stopped,” and “Godfather World,” which take a look at The Godfather’s influence on popular culture today. Each film includes a commentary by Coppola.

Why do I like Godfather III and have seen it again and again?
1. Sofia Coppola's performance aside (which seems less jarring now that when I saw the film originally), the extended director's cut of Godfather III (available first on the laserdisc and the first DVD edition) fixed some pacing issues and filled some logical holes that plagued the second half of the theatrical release.
2. Andy Garcia! Why not a bastard son to take the mantle from Michael? And there is a wonderful parallel between Vincent's climb in III and Michael's in the original Godfather. Both were outsiders, to an extent. But unlike Michael, who was originally pulled into the 'family' due to circumstances beyond his control (and ends up damned in the end because of it), Vincent basically is damned already and is more the willing to embrace the responsibilities that are eventually thrust upon him. In fact, he seems to relish it! And its a credit to Garcia that can pull off this transition from street punk to Godfather off so easily.
3. Finally, that last 15 minutes or so is so damn operatic. During the climax, Copolla simultaneously orchestrates two great dramas - the one on the stage and the one concerning the Corleones and their enemies. I've often imagined that Copolla had this sequence in his head and had every beat and image storyboarded in detail months prior - it's just such a wonderful mix of music, sound and image - edited flawlessly.
4. An finally, after all the shit has gone down, there's the failed assasination attempt that results in the death of Michael's daughter. For this man, who so long sought redemption for his acts, this becomes the final straw that results in his isolation where, seemingly spared an easy fate, he is left to be haunted by his demons, abandoned and dying alone in the Sicilian dirt. And he dies with the haunting realization that there were three important women in his life and he lost them all because of his actions.

I liked The Godfather Part III because it continued the story line and let me know what happened next to the characters from the previous films. I think the movie was good but not as great as the first film. Maybe the novelty is not as great but that does not stop me from enjoying Godfather III
