I've read the script for Darren Aronofsky's next film, The Wrestler, and it's a really touching and understated piece of work that really put me in mind of Bruce Springsteen, and not just because it's set in New Jersey. The film's story, about a man whose glory days have faded and who is looking to set his life right while also possibly getting back some of what he lost, is like something right off the grooves of Nebraska or Born in the USA. So it's incredibly fitting that Aronofsky has nabbed The Boss to do the closing credits song for his movie, which will be debuting at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals in the coming weeks.

Says Aronofsky on his blog (via Slashfilm): 'bruce springsteen wrote a beautiful original song for the closing the film. called THE WRESTLER it is a wonderful acoustic piece. makes me choke up every time i hear it. he really captured the spirit of the film and mickey's character in the piece.'

Perfect. Could Bruce be making a return to the Oscar stage? I'd love it.

Meanwhile, Bruce may be making an on screen appearance in Judd Apatow's Funny People. He's written into the script in a hilarious scene where he attempts to deliver some spiritual guidance. It's sort of reminscent of his appearance in High Fidelity, but gives Bruce the chance to play a little self-deprecating. I don't know if Apatow has gone out to Bruce with the role, and the part is written with enough wiggle room that it could be any wise rock star, but I do think Springsteen would be terrific if he accepts.

I just want to see more Bruce in the popular culture these days. We need him.
