STEADY LEAK: IF TODAY WAS DECEMBER 31ST...

Note: This is as much a testimonial of how much I've dropped the ball in my film watching habits as it is a piece of damning evidence of how weak 2008 has been theatrically.
We've stepped fully into the Fall of 2008 and I can't bring myself to accept the fact that Iron Man is still my favorite movie of the year. Last year by this date, many of the movies that made my top 15 of last year (read it here) [La Vie En Rose (June 8), Hot Fuzz (April 20), Superbad (August 17), Zodiac (March 2)], American Gangster (October 19), The Darjeeling Limited (September 29), The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford (September 21) had already been released and there's nothing this year that can really compete with Zodiac and La Vie en Rose or any of them really. Almost every year it seems like I freak out and proclaim a year the worst year in recent memory and almost every year enough decent stuff ends up coming out to beat my negativity back. But looking at this coming Fall and Winter... I'm worried.
Granted, I haven't seen as many films this year as in past years but if there was something that seemed like a film I'd enjoy I usually made the effort. Here's some of the stuff I've yet to see:
Appaloosa - Will see it this week, have pretty high hopes.
W. - Dying to see it.
Kung Fu Panda - Somehow I'm not really worried this will sway me.
Wall-E - Looking forward to it, but it eluded me and my daughter saw it opening weekend while I was on a trip.
The X-Files: I Want to Believe - Dying to see it, have no illusions it'll contend.
Be Kind Rewind - I have no interest in seeing this for some reason.
Redbelt - Will see it in the next couple of weeks.
Son of Rambow - Once again, is of little to no interest to me.
The Wackness - Haven't had a chance.
War, Inc. - Word of mouth has me scared.
Body of Lies - Am excited to see it and will this week.
Religulous - I'll see this on Halloween as it's a horror film.
Blindness - How is this bad? How the fuck is this bad? I'll find out.
Even scarier, here's the stuff that if the year ended would have a chance of making my list, in no order:
The Dark Knight - A damn good movie, but hardly worth all of the weight bestowed upon it.
Iron Man - Great and super-entertaining but if not the kind of film one would want to have make their top five list.
Burn After Reading - A decent Coen Brothers movie but not in my top five of theirs.
Cloverfield - It's Cloverfield. I like it. I've moved on.
Hellboy II - The Golden Army - Great and maddeningly creative. I wonder if it'd have done better released this time of year.
Pineapple Express - Solid and James Franco is glorious.
Tropic Thunder - Funny as shit and I have no problem embracing its mainstream-ness.
The Ruins - Actually a pretty solid little horror flick.
Rambo - So dumb. So fucking thin. So great.
In Bruges - I love it to death, and it'll make the top fifteen but in a typical year this'd be an 'honorable mention' flick.
Leatherheads - Decent I suppose but not really up to snuff with top 20 considerations.
The Incredible Hulk - Yeah. No. I mean, yeah but... no.
If you care, here's my current worst:
The Happening - Such a piece of asshole filmmaking. M. Night needs to go to writer jail.
Sex and the City - Eternal and pandering. Fuck this movie.
Get Smart - Really? They're making another one? Who's the jerk that made this popular?
The Bottom Line: This Fall/Winter had better blow our doors off or else I'm not going to even have the strength to muster a list this year.

Appaloosa is solid but definitely not top-20 material -- slight yet ponderous. Most of the stuff that's impressed me this year has been documentaries. Check out Man on Wire or Encounters at the End of the World.

I was not too excited about Son of Rambow either, but after seeing it have reccommended it to all my friends. It really does get across that period in your childhood when certain films become iconic and inspiring. It is also a very sweet film with a dark streak. Don't be put off by the 1980s setting or the quaint British trappings. It is a very solid piece. The above talkbacker has some solid recs as well. Documentaries are really gaining more prominence with the mainstream these days and those two are strong (Encounters... was no patch on Herzog's best, but is strong Herzog. Suicidal penguins. That's all I need to love a movie.)

Yeah, Encounters at the End of the World is my favorite of the year so far, but I will agree with Nick that this year has been slacking and lacking.

Really enjoyed reading that, Nick. A drop off for me this year too. Did you see DOOMSDAY? I think it's totally your bag.

Nick, just wanted to take umbrage with one comment you made above:
Iron Man: Great and super-entertaining but if not the kind of film one would want to have make their top five list.
I'm curious as to why it would be a shame to include such an entertaining film on a Best Of list. It was fun, well-written, well-acted, well-directed... it was a popular *and* critical success.
Is there some stigma with a non-"art house" film being one of the best of a given year? For what it's worth, my favorite film of 2008 is, hands down, "Speed Racer". Insanely creative and visual, action-packed, and it's got a father/son dynamic that brought actual tears to my eyes. (Oh, and Christina Ricci in her go-go outfit flying her fuschia helicopter... droooool...) "Speed Racer" succeeded for me much more than, say, "The Assassination Of Jesse James", which, while a pretty movie, was dull as dishwater.
Anyway, not slamming you, just wondering why a "genre" or "fun" flick can't be the best of the pack.

Kung Fu Panda is the fucking tits if you have any appreciation for 70's Shaw flicks. It is seriously an awesome fucking kung fu movie. And not a single pop culture reference in sight! And I also throw my support behind Man on Wire. Fucking fascinating movie. Amazing stuff, for so many reasons.

Tom McCarthy's THE VISITOR, after a DVD viewing, might be my favorite film of the year so far. I didn't see it mentioned in your article, so if you haven't seen it, Nick, it's worth a look.

Was just thinking similar thoughts. Here's hoping 2008 has some plot twists in the final reel. Maybe Benjamin Button or The Road will be it.

kung fu panda does fucking rule.

Come'on where's Speed Racer. Easily among the top ten to come out of Hollywood.

I second the umbrage of GiggityGoo. Great and super entertaining belongs all over a top 5 list. Although I think you were mostly trying to get across the point that compared to the top 15 lists of recent years, Iron Man just wouldn't be as great or entertaining as a Zodiac or a No Country or an Ocean's 12(WTF?).

I did not like Speed Racer.

Nick, son of Rambow is worth your time. The wackness is overrated. Decent but way overrated by dev. Kung fu panda is much better than expected. Wall E is almost genius. Almost. And how great was the Ruins?

Yeah, most of my faves this year have come to me through the Sydney Film Festival... Let the Right One In and The Wackness are both pretty boss. The Strangers and The Orphanage were both damn solid horror flicks. The Square is a pretty decent Australian attempt at a Coen-ish noir thriller, but I suppose that hasn't been released stateside yet. Other than that... yeesh. Funny Games is probably my favourite film of the year so far, and it's a goddamn shot-for-shot remake of a film I saw 10 years ago!

great to see someone liked In Bruges besides me....that is a great little flick that is mean as hell and was marketed poorly

The Visitor was an excellent indie film. Also check out The Counterfeiters.

I love how nerds have no ability to put "Speed Racer" in perspective. Cream your pants much, fuuuck. Get an attention span. On the other hand, "In Bruges" is rather great. As is "The Wackness".

"I love how nerds have no ability to put "Speed Racer" in perspective. Cream your pants much, fuuuck. " ................. What the fuck does that mean? I think Speed Racer is incredible filmmaking, and it has nothing to do with being a nerd or a fanboy, and everything to do with being a person who appreciates movies. I've seen just about everything Nick has listed above, and I would put Speed in the top ten easily. The movie is years ahead of its times. You don't gotta like it, but its true.

are you anticipating Synecdoche, New York? After watching the trailer, I'm afraid of seeing this movie. I'm afraid after watching that, no other film will impress me ever again.
