FROM CHILDREN OF MEN TO CRIMES IN TIME

Time Crimes was one of my very favorite films at Sundance this year (read my original review here). A small Spanish movie with a tiny cast but huge ideas, Time Crimes is about the kind of trouble you can get into by traveling through time as little as an hour and a half. Great without major special effects or big action set pieces, Time Crimes is a movie that should be enjoyed for what it is - which is why I was pretty disappointed to hear that the remake rights were bought at the festival. Americans just can't be asked to see a foreign movie, I guess. Now there's some good news on the remake front - Timothy J. Sexton has been hired to write it. You'll recognize him as the guy who worked with Alfonso Cuaron on the script for Children of Men, one of the great science fiction movies of the last decade. It's a film that gets big - much bigger than Time Crimes - but never loses its way when it comes to characters and meaning, which will be crucial for this remake.
Meanwhile, Magnolia owns the original. Let's hope they don't take their time releasing it here in the United States. I can't wait to see it again.

Children of Men = one of the tightest fucking 109 minute movie in a long fucking time. No easy feat to pack so much punch in such a short running time. Yeah I know The Fountain was even shorter. Man both of those movies were so fucking good and bombed so fucking hard it still depresses me. Anyway looking forward to this one.

Looks interesting. Project seems to have nice pedigree. Could be cool. Hope, hope.

Americans HATE anything rendered in a foreign language. The same applies for black & white movies. It makes their brains hurt.

If they watch a black & white foreign movie it'll get all Scanners up in this bitch

I hate that scanners reference.

Not to take the bait, but seriously -you're reading an American site with an article about a foreign film. The fact is, Americans enjoy foreign films just as much as foreigners enjoy American films -which is to say: every country prefers films in their own language, but are generally open minded to films in foreign languages as well.

I had a movie showing at a film fest in Florida two weeks ago, and my mom got drunk and hit on Timothy Sexton for about fifteen minutes. I later found out she thought he wrote Idiocracy.

Timecrimes was great--my only complaint about it was the title and tagline that made it seem a lot more pulpy and stupid than it was. I really want to see the Spanish version again but if an American version can be done without Nic Cage and a car chase scene, I might try that too.
