JASON SEGEL AND THE MUPPETS PUT ON A SHOW

When it was announced that Jason Segel and Nick Stoller - the writer/star and director, respectively, of the R-rated comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall - would be writing and directing the next Muppet movie, a lot of people wondered what the heck kind of a movie it would be. Would these two, members of the Judd Apatow company, be making some sort of post-modern or winking take on the Muppets? Would they be doing something edgy? From what I was able to gather at the Hawaii junket for Sarah Marshall, not at all.Apparently their Muppet film is going to be incredibly old fashioned, with the familiar Muppet characters putting on a show to save an old theater (the theater from The Muppet Show?). The danger? An evil character wants to tear the place down to get at the oil underneath. It's sort of current!
Stoller and Segel don't know what film is next for them, whether it be romantic comedy The Five Year Engagement or this Muppet film, but considering that Segel is an avowed nut for Muppets, I think it's possible we'll see this sooner rather than later.

I'm glad its not gonna be super edgy. I'm mean jokes that the parents get is fine, but I wouldn't want the muppets turning into meet the feebles.

Nah, doesn't need to be anything like Meet the Feebles. But this suddenly feels like a stunt will not deliver on its premise. Why have Jason Segel do an old fashion Muppet movie. Why have *anyone* do a Muppet movie at this point if it's not going build off what has come before and go someplace new? But that's as good as anything else, I suppose. Only thing I am really against is the oil aspect and the idea that this bring the Muppets to the modern day. If we get scenes in Iraq and a puppet Saddam being pulled out of a spider hole, I'll quit my bitching and get in line.

I love the Muppets as much now as I did when I was a kid, and can't wait to see them being treated with genuine love and respect again, rather than as the commodity they have been reduced to this past decade or so. Bring it on.

Wow. Congrats on making no sense at all.
I'm excited for this, if only because it promises a certain level of quality and comedy that's been missing from these characters since Disney started whoring them out (that Oz special was atrocious).
I have one simple request for Mr. Segal: NO WHOOPIE GOLDBERG.
...Thank you. That is all.

oil? imagine if the muppets had to sqaure off against daniel plainview
i'd pay to see that
Comment #6 (Posted by Jesse Custer)
Daniel Plainview is practically a muppet anyway - give Guy Smiley some stubble and a squint and there you go. The only thing that could have elevated "There Will Be Blood" more would have been Plainview bobbing offscreen madly, waving his arms in their arm shouting "YAAAAAAAAAAY!" after bashing Dano's head in.

Yes bitches, because we currently have wayyyyy to many old-school quality programs that appeal to kids and adults. Right. Pfft.

What's the big deal? Everyone knows Muppets piss and poop sweet crude oil. No big secret - just ask 'em nicely and they'll give it to you.
Doozers on the other hand... smarmy little bastards.

Yeah, I like this idea - Henson Younger doesn't seem to know what to do with them and has been experimenting with his own "Rude Muppet" live show, so I'd rather see someone with an idea of trying to recapture the original magic take a crack at it. Frank Oz for "Angry Oil Man".

Again I'd like to re-iterate my interest in seeing "Muppet Night of the Living Dead"

Anyone complaining needs to watch any Muppet movie after Henson died and realize that anything mildly creative is going to be a step up from "Muppets in Space."

I would give my first born to see a Muppet version of Night of the Living Derad

Unless you're twelve and under, who cares about the muppets? Grow up, ye unwashed manchildren! And screw Farscape, you no-taste havin' fanboys! (Did I do it right Devin?)

It's clear from these comments that most of you idiots have never seen The Muppet Show from the 70s. It wasn't really for kids, but wasn't at all obscene either.
If, in fact, this is what Segal/Stoller have in mind, I would be giddy over a return to that style of awesomeness.
