If you're a movie nerd - and I know you are. You're reading CHUD.com, for Christ's sake - you're going to love this news. Guillermo del Toro has announced that legendary poster artist Drew Struzan will be doing the art for Hellboy: The Golden Army, opening July 11th. We got a note from the big guy himself where he expressed his excitement about working with Drew again: "For me, Drew Struzan's work summarizes the power of cinematic storytelling. I eagerly await his first sketches for this HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY poster, and I am incredibly honored by the fact that Drew has agreed to collaborate with me again. Struzan's fans all over the world, rejoice and be prepared for another beautiful piece to come from the master's hands!!"
The two met last week to discuss ideas for the poster (and probably lots of other super nerdy stuff as well). In case you forgot what happened the last time these two worked together, here's Drew's great art for Hellboy:

Slow news day.

I would have liked to have heard whether or not Guillermo has final say on this. Struzan's posters for Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth were superb, but it seems the only guy who can get a Struzan posters actually into theater displays these days is Spielberg. I hope the studio doesn't ditch this in favor of some Photoshopped heads.

Why is he legendary? I like his posters (his style is a welcome change nowadays) but I don't find his work to always be that interesting to look at. The last two Star Wars posters were somewhat bland and disappointing. And they never use his art on video cases either, which makes it a somewhat hollow victory (his posters will hang on cinema walls for a month, but photoshoped heads will haunt Wallmart for eternity).

This is glorious news. Struzan's posters completely take me back to being a wide-eyed little brat at the multiplexes. My personal fav is Big Trouble in Little China.

I think the exciting thing is that there are movies out there that are still getting genuine ZOMG movie posters being made instead of half head blown up shots. I mean really, the only thing keeping Iron Man from being a marketable powerhouse is someone giving two shits to do a quality poster for it. Chopped and Shopped promotion stills just don't cut it. If you want an eipic film, you want an epic look. I mean the font set for Indy IV alone as fanboys sporting cinderblocks in their drawes. I personally am a fan of true movie posters of all kinds. Dying art, so it is.

Fine, Bobby - what are your major life accomplishments, pray tell?

I've been a Struzan fan for years(friggin' LOVED his unused design for The Mist), but I wish he wasn't doing Hellboy movie art. Even his amazing and kinetic style can't do anything to improve those horribly overdesigned characters.

Struzan's art is SOOOO different from Mignola that they never should be compared. Neither should the movies be compared to the comics. That said, Struzan is consistently one of the finest illustrators alive today. I like his Star Wars posters very much, but his work on Indiana Jones (novels and movies) is nothing short of amazing. I can't wait to see what he gives us for Hellboy again.

I like Struzan, but how about a poster from
Mignola?

It's great that someone in Hollywood appreciates Drew's work. Sadly a lot of people don't know how often and greatly Drew gets screwed over by fans such as those over at Lucasfilm. For more check out my comments on the last Indy poster Drew did. Drew's confirmed my suspicions. http://www.pacitto.com/blogs/?p=582

I second that motion Apocalypto. Drew Struzen is the Danny Elfman of movie posters.

I enjoy Drew Struzan's art very much, I am often annoyed when his poster art doesn't make it to DVD covers and such. Good on Del Toro for coming back to him a second time.
To bobby: Goes to show how iconic Drew's artwork is if you immediately thought of Star Wars upon seeing this Hellboy poster. If he's not that great as you claim how come you recognised the work sub-consciously?? It doesn't look star wars-ish anyway - it looks Struzan-ish if you ask me.
